His attainments as a scholar and success in imparting useful knowledge, emi nently qualify him for the discharge of the im portant duties of his station. Mr. Ring, the principal English Teacher, re cently engaged by the Board, comes with the high est recommendations as to character, talents, lite rary attainments and skill in teaching, and the Trustees feel assured that he will sustain the re putation which led to his selection. The branch of the Academy at Summerville is under the immediate management of Mr. Frank lin George, a gentleman of experience in teach ing, and highly recommended. The advantage of the location of this branch of the Academy in one of the most healthful neighborhoods in the State, and sufficiently remote from the unfavorable in fluence of a crowded town, are too well known to need comment. In manv hun dred certified rases which has been made public, and in aJrnott ever} species of disease to which ihe human frame is liable, the happv effects of MOFFAT’S LIFE PILLS AM) PHEMX BIT TERS have been gratefully and publicly ac l nowlcdged by the persons benefiiued, and who were previously unacquainted wiih the benu’iliilly philosophical principles upon which they are compoun Jed, and upon which they consequently act. The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves in diseases ul every form and descripiion. Their first operation is to loosen from the coats of the stomach and bowels, the various impurities and crudities coretantiy settling around them ; ana to remove the hardened faeces which collect convolusions of the smallest intestines. Other medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave such collected masses behind as to produce habitu al costtveness with ell its train ofevils. or in a sud den d.arrbcßa, with its eminent dangers. This fact is well known to all regular anatomists, who ex amine the human bowels after death ; and hence the prejudice of those well informed men against, quack medicines —or medicines prepared and her laded to the public bv ignorant p< rsons. 'I lie se cond effect of the Life Medicines is to cleanse the kidneys and tlie bladder, and by this means, the liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which entirely depends upon the regularity of the urinary organs. The blocd, which lakes its red color from the agency of the liver and the lungs before it passes intoilte heat, being thus purified by them and nourished by food coming from a clean stom ach, courses freely th-.ough the veins, renews every part of the system, and triumphantly mounts the banner of healih in ihe blooming cheek. Moffat’s Vegetable Life Medicines have been thoroughly attested, and pronounced a sovereign remedy for Dyspepsia, Flatulency, Palpitation of the Heart, Loss of Appetite, Heart-burn and Head ache, Restlessness, 111-temper, Anxiety, Languor and Melancholy, Cosliveness, Diarrhoea, Cholera, Fevers of ail kinds, Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsies of all kind, Gravel, Worms, Asihma and Consurap tion. Scurvy, Ulcers, Inveterate Hores, Scorbutic Eruptions and Had Complexions, Eruptive com plaints, Sallow, Cloudy, and other disagreeable ! Complexions, Salt Rheum, Erysipelas, Common Colds and influenza and various other complaints which afflict the human frame, in fever and ague, particularly, the Life Medicines have been most eminently successful; so much so that in the Fever and Ague districts, Physicians almost uni versally prescribe them. All that Mr. Moffat requires of his patient is to be particularin taking the Life Medicines strictly according to the directions. It is not by a news paper notice, or any thirg that lie himself may say in their favor, that lie hopes to gain credit. It is alone by the result of a fair Trial. MOFFAT’6 MEDICAL MANUAL ; designed! as a domestic guide to health.—This little pamphlet edited by r W. H. The following is the language of the com mittee ot the Philadelphia Medical Society on the Radical Cure of Hernia. “ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected '■ the permanent and accurate retention of the in | testines in every case of Hernia observed by the committee, without material inconvenience to the patient, and often under trials more severe than are usually ventured upon by' those who wear other trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any other apparatus known to the committee.” “ The committee are induced by' the foregoing conclusions to recommend, in strong terras, the in j struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of ! the profession, as the best known means of me chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the ; highest chances of radical cut e.” The following is from the Southern Medical and i Southern Journal, published in our own city. “ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia, and that Dr, Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best , yet invented to effect the object.” j Persons from a distance can have the instruments applied, upon application at the office, and all ne i cessary information given to enable them to adjus it themselves. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and docs not belong to the family of quack medicines; for the reason that the component parts are made known to the faculty, or any one else that may wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme Noith has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting tc be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuiu than for one to offer meal from the com stalk, to say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato so far North. Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they profess to be, and will do for otheis what they have done for such as mav have used them ; as .his is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will doubtless be valuable information to families to know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the system in much better condition than the other kind ; many will recollect with what trembling anxiety calomel has been given to children, and how the}* then wished for a substitute. It has long been known that the Tomato contained ca thartic principles, but not until of late was it ascertained that -itey contained alterative and diu retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use the preparation most cheerfully, for tiie reason that they know what it is .Were it a patent mystery, they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they justly do the one thousand and one cu r e-alls of the day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in his city. Its operation upon the human system is such that it invariably acts like a charm, for the relief and radical cure of a certain common and disagreeable “ills the flesh is heir to.” This prize obtains its own name from the certain success hich has attended it through all of its trying c cumstances, namely, “five days,” —the same su jess which followed it in a Northern lati tude still obtains in a more Southern. Its known and valued virtues have already enriched to an a'most incredible extentthe children of this warlike prince, not only by actual sale of the article itself to in dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although free to use it in their respective tribes, which places it in the hands of every Indian who rely with, I may say, religious confidence on its cura ble powers. Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can be anglisized of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to 31. They have passed away from the hundreds that are daily launched upon the tide of experiment, and now stand before the public as high in reputation, and as extensively employed in all parts of the United States, the Canadas, Texas Mexico, and the West Indies, as any medicine that has ever been prepared for the relief of suffering man. They have been introduced wherever it was found possible to carry them ; and there are but few towns that do not contain some remarkable evidences of their good etfects. The certificates that have been presented to the propiietor exceed twenty thousand! upwards of live hundred of which are from regular practising physicians, wiw arc the most competent judges of their merits. Often have the cures performed by this medicin been the subject of editorial comment, in Virion newspapers and journals ; and it may with truth he asserted, that no medicine of the kinl has ever re ceived testimonials of greater value thin are at tached to this. They are in general use as a family medicine and there are, thousands of families who declare they re never satisfied until they have a supply always on hand. They have no rival in curing and preventing BiliiousJfevers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver Complaints, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma, Dropsj r , Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen, Piles, Cholic, Female Obstructions, Heartburn, Furred Tongue, Nausea, Distension of the Stomach and Bowels, Incipient Diarrhoea,Flatulence,Habitu al Costiveness, Loss of Appetite, Blotched or Sallow Complexion, and in cases of torpor of the bowels, where a cathartic or aperient is needed They are exceedingly mild In their operation, producing neither nausea, griping nor debilitv. The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No Ca.,March 3d, 1838: Dr. Peters —Dear Sir, By request of your agent, Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the almost miraculous effects of your piPs ; and I w r ould add, that you may make use ol them, in connection with my name, in any manner you deem proper, I speak of their merits from experience,as I and my family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three years ; and so great aj*e the benefits we have receiv ed from them in general, that I would rather pur chase them at ten dollars a box than have my house without them. I will not enumerate the afflictions the}' have relieved us of; but I can assure you they were many, and of very opposite natures, which has fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally the enemy of every disease. I will mention one case. I have a sister who had been for a long pe riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and was brought by it to the very verge of the grate. She was attended by the most eminent physicians that money could procure; but all their efforts to restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex pecting every day to be her last, your pills were introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal pable wore their effects that three doses visibly re lieved her, and in less than three months she was perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all who were witness of it, (but more especially the suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to miraculous; and yet I could mention many more of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills were equally successful in rescuing the patients from the jaws of death. Need 1 add that the popu larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in this section of the country ? But this I presume 3'ou know from the immense quantity you dispose of. I may mention, however, thatnotwithstanding its general use, 1 never heard an individual complain of its elfecls. My residence is 12 miles from Ral eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. I am, with sen timents of regard, your ob’t servant. A. G. BANKS. To Ur. Peters, —Sir—For upward s of fifteen months, I have been cruelly afflicted with Fever j and Ague: and during the time could find nothing— j though 1 had applied to every thing that gave me | any thing like permanent relief. At length, how ; ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one of our best physicians, and 1 am most grateful and j happy in being able to add, that 1 had scarcely used i two boxes when 1 found that they had restored me | to perfect health. Since then, various members of i my family have used them with equal success— and consequently 1 feel it my duty to apprise you of the fact, and to request of you to publish this ! certificate, as lam anxious to add my public testi i mony to the almost miraculous virtues of j our un rivalled medicine, llespectfully j ours, THEODORE JAMES. Augusta, Ga., Feb 10, 1839. Communication received from the eminent Dr. J. H. Irwin of Florence, Georgia: Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir—On the night of the 11th last., I was called in great haste to the I house of a fellow ci.izen, (Mr. Lee,) where I found | his son laboring under a most alarming attack of j Cynanche Tracncalis (Cronp) and apparently be- I yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for tune, however, I had in my pocket a broken box of your pills —four of which I administered, with such immediate happy eflect that in a few minutes rny patient was at ease, and out of danger. This case, in connection with my name is at j our ser vice—and I have the pleasure to be able to inform you that your inestimable medicine is in,such great favor with the faculty here, that 1 believe there is not one of them who does not use it in his private practice.
