It is supposed that some Western rcntleman will be called to the War Depart ment.” There was a great gathering of the people, favorable to Harrison and Reform, at Fredericks iurg, \ a., on Frid iy last. The meeting eonsis ling of 2,000 persons, was addressed by Messrs. 3 reslon, ot S. C., Hoffman, of N. Y., Messrs. Wise, Leigh, Gov. It relates D Napoleon’s ill-fated Russian campaign, and the disastrous retreat of his legions. I But the vaulting ambition ofthe great conquer or at last overshot itself. Alter ins most arduous Oiul perhaps most triumphant campaign, under taken with a profusion of military resources un ixaniplcd in the annals of war, the ancient capi tal ofthe Russian empire was in his hands ; yet, tom the refusal of the enemy to make peace, and ■he sterhty of the vast surrounding country, the lontest was bootless to his purpose. He had col lected the mightiest army the world ever saw; Tom all parts of the continent he had gathered lis forces ; every deversity of blood, and complex on, and tongue, garb and weapon, shone along lis line ; the resources of whole provinces moved hrough the kingdoms which his arms held in awe; i he artillery of whole citadels traversed the fields; llie cattle on a thousand hills were made the food li the myriads whom he poured into the plains rt’JSastern Europe, where blood llowed in rivers ind the earth was whitened with men’s bones, ut this gigantic enterprise, uniformly successful, ras found to have no object when it had no longer my enemy to overcome, and the victor in vain ued to thl vanquished for peace. The conflagra tion of Moscow in one night began his discomfit hre, which the frost of another completed. Upon Ihc pomp and circumstance of unnumbered war riors, their cavalry, their guns, their magazines, llieir equipage—descended slowly, flake by flake, the snow of a Northern night. The hopes of papoleon were blighted, the retreat of his arma tnent was cut off and his doom sealed far more Irreversably than if the conqueror of an hundred ■elds had been made captive with half his force. Ul his subsequent efforts to regain the power he ad lost, never succeeded in countervailing the fleets of that Russian night. The fire of hisge lious burned, if possible, brighter than ever. In (vo campaigns his efforts were more than human, is resources more miraculous than before, his a!or more than worthy the prize he planned for. lu?, all was iain. His weapon was no longer in is hand, his army was gone ; and his adversaries, u more quailing under the feeling of his superior ature, had discovered him to he vincible, like umselves, and grew bold in their turn. * —— The Chops.—The Franklin (La.) Republican piles that both the cane and cotton crops are fry fine, notwithstanding the late drought, 'he corn crops will not fall short, as was gene lily supposed, and the late corn is coming on lirly, and is daily improving from the effects of le frequent showers that are falling. Neapolitan Indemnity.—We understand lat the 7th instalment due from Govern ment of Naples, has been promptly paid, and is low on its way from Havre to this country, in ■old. Soon as it arrives, public notice will be liven and the distribution of the money made Imong the claimants.— Globe. Dotting, Washington, Georgia IN offering a new Journal to tbe public for pa tiOiiagc, it is custumary and proper to set forth in a prospectus, the principles which its conduc tors intent to support, and to give such pledges as to iG management that its patrons may not at any future time find themselves deceived or disappear ed in its course. And first, as to our political creed. Relieving that there is at present a crisis in our national af fairs, winch requires the hearty and unremitting exertions of every true lover of his country to preserve it from the destruction that menaces it that a powerful and fatal influence is now exerted upon our institutions by am! itious and unprinci pled po iticians; that the Constitution, that safe guard of our libex tics, is in danger from their ma chinations, and that the State Rights doctrines and the punciptes of the revolutionary patriots only, can piescrs e it inviolate, we shall give our unde \iating support to those doctrines. Our motto shall be “Principles and Men;’ ’ therefore, of the prominent candidates for the Presidency, now fe ioie the people, we choose those for our support who we believe will carry out State Right* mea sures, viz; General WILLIAM HENRY HAR HI >ON and JOHN TYLER, gentlemen whom even their enemies allow to be true patriots an I honest men. As the title of our journal indicates, we shall devote much ot its columns to the interests of Agriculture. We shall endeavor to give to the Planter the latest and best information of the im provements, now a'most daily taking place in his business. We are aware that in the strife of party, agriculture, the foundation on which society rests, has been too much neglected by the press, and that some “Reform” is needed in this respect. All the aid in our power shall be given to the cause of literature, an 1 we shall endeavor 1o ren der the Gazette as interesting as possible to every class of readers.
