Rhcdrilsland Election. she flection for members of the Genera! As f,„b'y took place on Tuesday. The Provi nce Journal gives the results in a few of the from which we compile the following ta l,jc ( by which it will be seen that the Whigs have thus far elected II and the Van Buren party 3 members of the Legislature. Whig. v. B. providence, 4 0 Cranston 2 0 fecituatc,, 0 2 Tiverton, 11 North Providence,... .2 ,0 Smith-field, 2 0 A Good Story and a Good Speech. In a speech of about three hours long,•delive red at Saratoga last week, Daniel Webster told the following illustrative anecdote: Seth Peterson was a neighbor of Mr. W., a hardy Yankee, of amphibious habits half farmer and half fisherman, with plenty of the “poor man's blessings,” and a good share of the com mits which his daily industry gave them. As he ami Mr. VV. were alone in a little boat, return ing from fishing, and while he was pulling at the oars, he would sometimes give his own concep tions of national policy. He had heard of the new notion among political men, that low prices were as good for poor men as high, provided the necessaries of life were reduced in a proportion ate degree; and was asked what he thought of these changes. He said—“lf every thing which the poor man wants could be reduced in exact proportion to the reduction of his wages, and remain so, he would not sutler by the change. But I have on ly one thing to sell, and that is my labor. I have many things to buy, and I find the reduction does not reach all the articles which I want. Flour and meat may be reduced, but lea, coffee, sugar, spices, and many other arlich s, are just the same as they were before the reduction of the wages ot labor. My interest, therefore, induces me to be in favor of a high rate of wages.” This, said Mr. Webster, as practical wisdom, which is far betterthan the tneones of politicians. The reasoning of Seth Peterson comprises the whole question in the best possible form. A correspondent of the New York American, referring to the same speech, says : Once, and once only, was there an approach to sentiment or pathos —and then not forced, nor prepared, but spontaneous, and springing natu rally and unavoidably from the topic he was dis cussing. It was an allusion to log cabins, and to the poor and contemptible sneers from which the association Os the name of General Harrison with log cabins sprang. “1 agree,” said Mr. Webster, “that to live in a log cabin is no recommendation of a candidate for the Presidency ; neither is it any disqualification. It is, however to be assumed, that a man who, by his capacity and industry, has raised himself from a log cabin, to eminent stations in his country, is of more than ordinary merit. I, sir, have a fee ling for log cabins and their inhabitants. I was not myself born in one, but my elder brothers and sisters were; in the cabin which, at the close of the Revolutionary War, in the penis and suffer ings of which he bore his part, my f.thererected on the extreme frontiers of N. Hampshire, when beyond the smoke which curled from its chimney, nok, another stood between it and the walls of Quebec. “In this humble cabin, amid the snow-drifts of New England, that father strove by honest labor to acquire the means of giving to his children a better education, and elevating them to a higher condition ihan his own. That caoin I honor for the sake of the venerable man who dwelt in it. (Here Mr. Websier’s voice became al most inarticulate from emotion.) The cabin I annually revisit, and thither I carry my children, that they may learn to honor and to emulate the s.ern and simple virtues that there formed their abode; and when I or they forget that cabin, and what it teaches and recalls, may my name and their name perish from among men for ever.” I do not pretend to give the exact words, hut this was the general sentiment, and the pause that for lowed—the choking pause of thousands of hearts struggling to subdue the emotions which this simple burst of filial piety called up, bore Nature’s holiest testimony to the power and eloquence of unadorned and unexaggerated Truth. The Mtstekt solved. —At a late Loco Foco meeting in St. George’s Hundred, State ofDela ware, Mr. Rogers addressed the gathering, and in explaining the present depressed and embar rassed condition of the country, he is stated l<» have said, “that it was produced by a concatena tion of fortuitous circumstances, superinduced by a succession of unparalleled coincidences !” “Clear as mud.”—Hurrah for Peripatetic.—*V.
