J. A P. COATS’ SIX CORD THREAD.
YJ manufacturers of this article beg
JL respectfully to inform the trade and the
public, that they have been under the necessity
of filing bills in Ciiancery against various par
ties engaged in manufacturing and selling fraudu
lent articles of thread, with their name and style.
In all these cases they have been successful in
procuring injunction, and they now beg to state
that they a-e resolved to protect their customers,
the public, and their own interests, against this
fraudulent traffic, by prosecuting, without regard
to cost, all parties who are base enough to lend
themselves to such unprincipled dealing in any
shape whatever.
The counterfeit threads in question are gene
rallyvery inferior three cord threads, running
from 50 to 150 yards in length, although marked
200 yards. They are sometimes ticketed with
fictitious labels, varying slightly from the genu
ine mark, such as tr.e fallowing, viz : “1. & B.
Coats,” “J. P. Coats,” “J. <fc P. Goats,”
This is done with the view, at-the same time, of
deceiving the public and escaping the penalty
due to deception and fraud. But it has been ex
pressly decided, in the recent cases on the sub
ject, that all imitations of manufacturers’ marks
or labels, intended to deceive, are frauds upon
the public, and invasions of the rights of parties,
entitling the parties suing to perpetual injunc
tion, costs and damages.
The following arc the sole agents for J. & P.
Coats’ Six Cord Thread for the United States :

Sons, 49 Beaver street; Bates is: Coates, 80 Ce
dar-street.
In Philadelphia.—Messrs. Bates & Coates,

mation that will lead to the detection of forge
ries on their stamp, communicated to any of the
above named parties, or to th ir counsel, Charles

Virginia Election.—We have a lew scat
tering returns Ironi the recent elections in this
Stale, but not sufficient to form any idea of the
result. Indeed, the returns always come in so
slowly, that it requires some time to form a de
finite opinion.
Gen. Jackson. —The Washington Const it u
lion ol Thursday -ay , ct By letters received in
the city within a few days, the melancholy and
unwelcome truth is disclosed to us, that Gen.
Jackson probably can survive but a short time
longer.”
The N. Y. Tribune of Thursday morning
says:—There is a good demand for all descrip
tions of Domestic Goods, and prices are rather
firm. The exports from Ist to 22J April have
been 3.997 packages. There is generally a lair
business doing among the jobbers, but it is not
so large as last season. The importers have
only done 75 per cent, as much business as last
spring.
The N. Y, Evening Post ol Thursday after
noon says, that the committees appointed by the
public meeling in that city to solicit aid lor the
sufferers at Pittsburgh, have met with great suc
cess.
The Philadelphia American says, that the
collections made in that city in behalf of the
Pittsburgh sufferers amounted on Wednesday
evening to seventeen thousand dollars. Of
this sum $15,000 have already been forwarded
to the Mayor of Pittsburgh.
The collections at Cincinnati, in aid of the
sufferers, amounted on Monday evening last to
$0,829.74; and a large amount of produce, (fee.
had been sent forward free ot all charge.
At Louisville, on Saturday, the collections
had reached $5,000.
Emigration to Oregon.—lt is stated by a St.
Louis paper that two companies, comprising
about a thousand persons, are assembled at In
dependence, Mo., on their way to Oregon,
where they intend to settle. They have a good
supply of wagons, cattle and provisions, and in
tended to start about the 20th inst.
Another company, with about 220 wagons,
was collected at St. Josephs, in the Platte coun
try, which intended to start at about the same
lime. A third company, with 35 wagons, had
assembled at another point on the river. Con
siderable accessions to these companies were
looked for.
Lieut. Fremont was about to start on another
exploring expedition beyond the mountains?
and 150 young men at Independence intend to
accompany him. TL?y were furnished with
mules and in all respects fully equipped for the
journey. The St. Louis New Era says :
“ The rush of emigration beyond the Rocky
Mountains will be very great, and ttiose who
expect to join the company should repair to the
Irontier immediately. The companies are par
ticular to preserve the character of the expedi
tion. No person is permitted to join an emi
grating parly until he has undergone an exami
nation, and if he be a criminal, a refugee from
justice, or a man of infamous character, he is
excluded.”
The Mormons.— lt is feared from present
appearances that there will be a serious disturb
ance between the Mormons and their enemies
before long again. It appears that the Governor
of Illinois has received intelligence, from two
authentic sources, that some anti-Mormon forg
ed an order in the name of General Deming fo r
a piece of artillery in McDonough county, and
that the same has been conveyed, on the authori
ty of this forgery, to the “Carthage Grays,” in
whose possession it now is. The Governor has
sent an agent lo Carthage to take possession of
all the State arms in the hands of these incipient
rioters.— Balt. Sun.

OUMMERVILLE FEMALE ~SE
kJ MIN ARY. —MR. and MRS. HATFIELD
who have for the last twelve years been engaged
in the ins trnction of youth, in Camden, Ca.
have determined to establish a Female Seminary
at the I Sand Hills, near Augusta. With this
view, they have secured a convenient and pleas
ant location in a central part of the village, (the
premises formerly occupied by the Rev. Mr. Da
vis.) where the/ will be prepared to receive into
their family tenor twelve young ladies as hoard
ers, and as many day scholars as may apply.
They flatter themselves that their mature ex
perience in Teaching, and the success which has
attended their efforts in South Carolina, will en
able them to meet the wishes of their patrons,
and to establish a permanent Institution of the
highest order in this healthful and pleasant local
ity.
The course of instruction will embrace all the
blanches of a liberal education, viz: the Lan
guages, ancient and mode n, Mathematics,
Belies Lcttres, &c. r Music and Drawing, with
the elementary branches.
Them personal supervision will be extended to
every department of instiaction, and if necessa
ry, the ablest assistants will be employed.
Instead of referring, as they might, to their nu
merous patrons resident in South Carolina, Mr.
and Mrs Hatfield beg leave to refer to the Rev.
Mr. Davis, of Augusta, who hns been personally
acquainted with them during their residence in
Carolina, and is familiar with their mode of in
struction, and authorizes them to append thefol
lowing expression ol his opinion. The school
will open on the first Monday (7th) of April.
Dear Vir : —I cheerfully accord to yourself
and Mrs. Hatfield, the assurance of my l ull con
viction of your unusual qualifications to conduct
the importaniand responsible enterprise in which
you have embarked. The fact, which is within
my knowledge, that you both have secured the
highest esteem, and retained the unlimited con
fidence of the community, in which, for so ma
ny consecutive years, you have almost entire
ly engrossed the instruction of the youth of
both sexes, is of itself a sufficient voucher of
your superior claims to public confidence, and
supercedes the necessity of any other testimo
nials. Yours, respectfully,
