ly-scented Jassimine of Goa, which he was so
caiclul 01, that he would not sutler it to be pro
pagated. His gardener, however, being in love
with a peasant girl in the neighborhood, gave
tier a sprig ot this choice plant on her birthday ;
ami he having taught her how to make cuttings,
she planted the sprig as a memorial of his affec
tion. It grew rapidly, and every one who saw
it, admiring its beauty and sweetness, wished to
have a plant of it. Tnese the girl supplied from
cuttings, and sold them so well, as to obtain
enough money to enable her to marry her lover.
The young girls of Tuscany, in remembrance
ol this adventure, always deck themselves on
their wedding day with a nosegay ot Jassimine
and they have a proverb, “ that she who is wor
thy to wear a nosegay of Jassimine is as rniod
as a fortune to her husband.”— Western CvM

Valuable and Simple Medicine. -When
food is taken that causes oppression, the best
remedy is hot water in which the rind of old
cheese has been grated, to be drank freely. This
simple remedy ought to be in the possession of
every family, as it will generally afford speedy
relief. Some fifty years since, a young lady died
in this town from the effect of eating fruit. A
post mortem examination was had, and some
experiments were made; nothing was found to
have so good an operation upon the contents of
the stomach as the grated cheese rind. Soon
after another lady was placed in a similar dan
gerous situation Irons the same cause. Her
medical attendant prescribed the above remedy,
and immediately relief was obtained. The me
dicine became popular with the past generation,
and a lady of that age wishes us to publish it to
this and succeeding generations— Portsmouth
Journal.

Cotton Our market for the last two days has assum

the Great Western, and before the receipt of those by

Since the receipt of the accounts by the recent arri
