HARLESTON, Aug. 14. Cotton— The opera
tions in Upland at the close of the previous week had
been entirely suspended, owing partly to the advance
which took place just after the receipt of the Hiber
nia’s advices, but more particularly to the still higher
claims urged by sellers; and it can hardly be said'that
they were resumed on Saturday last,'as the sales
weie limited to some 93 bales; on Monday, however,
purchasers yielded to a certain extent to circumstances
which they could not control, and duringj.be day the
transactions reached fully 500 bales, with an upward
tendency in prices on some classifications, but on
Tuesday, and the tvo succeeding days, there was a
manifest disposition on the part of purchasers to hold
otf, under the belief that as the week advanced sellers
would become more tractable, and the sales in the
three days were light; in this however tl ey were mis
taken. Yesterday a fair business was done, and the
week closes with a wider margin in prices, for it wiil
be seen on reference to our quotations, that the mid
dling fair, and fair and fully fair grades, are *c. higer
than those given in our report of the 7th inst. The
receipts of the week reach 1138 hales; and the sales
in the corresponding period are 2330 hales, as follows:
29 bales at 10*; 86 at II; 143 at 11|; 90atll|; 130
at 11*; 200 at Ilf; 274 at 12; 73 at 12*; 213 at 12*;
53 at 12f; 680 at 12*; 92 ut 12|; 88 at 12|; 21 at 12f;
and 134 bales at 13c. We have no transactions to re
cord in any of the descriptions of Long Cotton.

Rice. —On Saturday last several parcels were con
tracted for at ss* per hundred, since which time noth
ing has been done. Our quotations for the present
must be considered altogether nominal. The growing
crop has been injured by a recent freshet, which has
overrun the Rice fields in the vicinity of Ashepoo,
Combahee, and other water courses, but it will be
some weeks yet, before the extent of the injury can be
ascertained. Since the above was written, we have
been informed that a parcel of 66 tierces, fresh beat,
of good quality, was sold at $5 per hundred.
Corn. The receipts per Rail Road reach this week
3380 bushels. We have heard of no transactions of
any magnitude. There is an ample supply on the mar
ket.
The receipts comprise 250 bundles North River,
which were sold at 70c. per 100 lbs.
Hour. —The stock on sale is light, but it is at the
same time fully equal to the demand. The transac
tions of the week have been limited to small parcels
of country at prices ranging from s4* to $6, and as
high as s6* per bbl., according to quality.
Bacon. —The market continues very quiet. Sales
are occasionally made in small lots.
Salt. —The receipts of the week comprise 2600
sacks, the bulk of which has been disposed of at SI, 15
per sack.
Sugar. — This article continues to attract the atten
t’.lmot purchasers, from the comparatively low prices
at which it is sold. The demand, which has been
principally for the country, has been confined solely
to Muscovado description, of which upwards of 200
hhds have been sold principally from 6* to 7c.
Coffee. —The sales reach 300 bags Rio at prices
ranging from 7* to Bc.
Molasses. —Market quiet. Sales 30 bbls. New
Orleans at 37c ; and small lots Muscovado in bbls.
at 30c. per gallon. Nothing doing in Cuba.
Bagging. —The sales of the week reach 300 pieces
Kentucky at 15 and 15*c.
Domestic Eiquors.- —New Orleans Whiskey has
experienced a decline. Sales about 200 bbls. at 24*
and 25c. A lot of N. E. Rum sold at 30c per gallon".
Received from New Orleans 200 bbls. Whiskey.
Exchanges. —There is very little doing. The
Banks sell Bills on England at 7 per cent, prem.; on
Prance 5f.23 a 5f.27. Checks on New York, Phila
delphia, Baltimore and Boston * per cent. prem.
Freights. —We continue to quote to Liverpool,
Cotton, in square bags, 7-16lhs a *d. Nothing up for
Havre. To New York and Boston, Cotton in square
hags, |c., with very little offering.
MOBILE, August. 11. — Cotton. —The market has
been very firm throughout the week, and the sales to
the extent of 4000 bales have been made at the quota
tions given below. The transactions in the early part
of the week were comparatively light, as both buyers
and sellers were willing to wait for the foreign advices,
then daily expected by the steamer Washington.
These came to hand on Saturday. On Monday the
Hibernia’s accounts to the 20th tilt, came to hand.
The consequence is, holders here have increased con
fidence, and are very stiff in their pretensions. The
daily transactions of the week have been as follows:
Wednesday 800, Thursday 500, Friday 300, Satur
day 800, Monday 1200, and Tuesday 400 bales. The
purchases have been on English and Northern ac
count, The stock on sale is becoming light, and the
week closes with a firm market.
LIVERPOOL CLASSIFICATIONS
Good and fine-• nornina'. Middling fair---ll all*
Good fair nominal. Middlings 10|al0f
Pair 11* a Ilf Ordinary 10 a—
The receipts of the week are 89 bales, the exports
5305 bales, and stock on hand last, evening, inclusive
of all on shipboard not cleared, 38,532 bales, against
10,277 bales same time last year.
Freights. —ln fereign the transactions have been
very light since our last, and a fraction decline has
been accepted by vessels on the berth —some parcels
having been taken for Liverpool at 11-I6d. Coast
wise we notice a further decline of an *c., a ship and
a brig having accepted |c. to New York, and a brig
for Providence at the same rate. There is also a brig
on the berth for Boston with a portion of her cargo en
gaged at fc. A ship and a brig are the only vessels in
port unengaged.
Exchange. —The market continues steady and
uniform, with a moderate business doing in domestic
exchange at the rates heretofore given" There has
been a little more activity in New York short bills
and a slight improvement in rates has been realized
otherwise we make no alteration in our figures. Fo
reign exchange is almost entirely neglected.

MOUNT EAGLE TRIPOLI.
/\ REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
fM. geologists to he a great rarity in nature, and
known to them by the name ofTripoli, has lately been
discovered in this country, although hut in one bed, of
very narrow limits, all owned by the “Mount Eagle
Manufacturing Company” incorporated for the sole
purpose of its manufacture,
j 1 his article is excellent for burnishing and cleaning

I certify that I have purchased a Cotton Gin from

COTTON GINS!
IHAVE heretofore labored that my cotton gins
should he thought superior to any manufactured iu
Georgia. By offering to the public such an article I
have been liberally jmtroni/.ed, for which I feel grate
lid. I have warranted all my fine gins. 1 have never
had one returned as not coming up to what 1 promised.
It is known I have, and do promise that my gins make
superior cotton. I have no travelling agents. I rely
on my gins telling a better tale for me, and one that
will be sooner believed than a travelling agent; in
short, I hope to make my gins sell themselves. I feel
confident in stating that I have made valuable im
provements in my fine gins, and that 1 shall hereafter
furnish an improved gin to anything heretofore sold.
1 would also inform citizens of Warren, Washington,
W ilkes, Columbia and Burke counties, that I have
purchased Simpson’s improvement for band machin
ery, and those who purchase my gins in the counties
named will have the use of the patent free ; the ma
terial, when desired, will be put on the head block,
free of charge. It will require a small outlay of ma
terial on the band wheel, which will be furnished at
the lowest possible rate, and w r hich, when used, re
duces the draft to an astonishing extent ; thecharacter
of the improvement is simply by propelling the ma
chinery by a slack band, instead of a tight one. My
finest Friction Roller Gins are sold at S 3 per saw.
My plain gins are also greatly improved, and will
be sold according to kind, from $2 to 52.50 per
saw. My finest, gins have heretofore sold higher than
other gins, and yet, heretofore, I have not been able to
supply the demand, whilst I have been unable to sell
but few plain gins. IP
Ordersor letters, addressed to me at Sparta, will be
promptly attended to, and gins delivered at purchasers’
residences, free of charge

Certificates.
Shoales of Ogeechee, Ga., March 17th, 1847.
G. T. Oglesby, Esq.-- Dear Sir: —Below 1 hand
my certificate, agreeably to your request, stating pre
cisely the opinion 1 entertain of their superiority over
any I have ever seen. 1 have also obtained the
certificate of Mr. Wilson, our Superintendent and Ma
chinist, who is the best judge of the quality of cotton,
as he ‘chews the bag.’ Very respectfully your friend
ruly, Thos, Cheeley»
Shoals of Ogeechee, Ga., 1847. —This is to certi
fy that I have used two of Mr. G. T. Oglesby’s Anti-
Friction Cotton Gins, (the one 60 and the other 45
saws,) for several years, and can truly say they are
superior to any thing of the kind now in use ; and form
an exception to what is said about this being an age of
improvement, at least as far as gin making is con
cerned. Thomas Cheeley,
Brothers' Factory, Shoals of Ogeechee, Ga. March
llth , 1847. —This is to certify that one of G. T.
Oglesby’s 60 saw Anti-Friction Cotton Gins is now,
and has been in use for the last fourteen months at
this place, and I can say with confidence that it is the
best article of the kind that I have yet seen.
B. J. Wilson, Super’t and Practical Machinist.
• Savannah, March 10 th, 1847.—The undersigned,
during the past season, have frequently noticed the
superiority of cotton, received from those planters wno
use gins manufactured by G. T. Oglesby, Esq., of
Sparta, over that from other gins. It has invariably
commanded the highest price, and very frequently
one-fourth of a cent per pound more than other cot
tons of the same class. Rabun & Pulton.
J. L. SwiNNEV.
Augusta, February 27th, 1847. —The undersigned
Factors and Commission Merchants, lake pleasure in
recommending to the planters generally, G. T. Ogles
by & Brother’s improved make of gins, and do not
hesitate to say that the cotton ginned on them is equal
to any received in this market, and in every instance
commands from an J to $ c. above highest quotations
and in point of durability think they cannot be stir
assed. Dye & Robertson.
Augusta, February 26th, 1847. —We take pleasure
in recommending to planters generally, Messrs. Ogles
by & Brother’s improved cotton gins, and do not hesi
tate to say the cotton ginned on them is equal to any
received in this market, and will always command
the highest quotations. Doughty & Beall.
Adams, Hopkins & Co.
Heard & Davison.
February Ist, 1847.—This is to certify that I have
now in use one of Oglesby’s improved cotton gins, and
that I consider it altogether superior to any gin 1 ever
used, running easy and making the cotton fine and
clear of motes. Wm. Tenell.
Sparta, February 15 th, 1847.—This is to certify,
that I have owned one of Mr. Oglesby’s improved
cotton gins for two years, and can safely recommend
his gins for two reasons. The first, that they do not
cut the lint or staple as other gins. The next, 1 con
cider them the most durable gins that I have ever
used. M. G. Ha RRIS.
February 25 th, 1847. —I have used one of the
above gins for one season, and concur fully in the
above. Benjamin T. Harris.
February 20lh, 1847. —We do certify, that we
have used for the last two years Mr. G. T. Oglesby’s
Anti-Friction Gins, and are decidedly of the opinion
that they are the best gins now in use in this State,
both for the fineness of the cotton and their durability,
and take great pleasure in recommending them to our
brother-farmers generally. Richard P. Sasnett.
Edward L. Barne. Joseph R, Sasnett.
John P. Sykes. John L. Birdsong.

GRISWOLD’S
IMPROVED COTTON OINS.
The subscriber, win continue the
MANUFACTURE OF GINS on his usual
extensive scale, and embraces this opportunity to
numerous customers for their liberal patron
age heretofore.
The estimation in which his gins are held may he
known from the fact of his having sold
MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND,
during the last three years, probably ten to one over
any other Factory in the State. This evidence of the
superiority of his Gins is accounted for by his being
the first to introduce the late improvements, and keep
ing the lead, by yearly adding new ones. Hi> first
and second improvements made the quality of cotton
perfect, though some were rather slow. His third
made them sufficiently fast; it then only remained to
mako them more durable and convenient, which has
been done he believes effectually, by several new im
provements the present year.
Besides, he has the exclusive right for the State, and
the privilege for other sections, to furnish
REED’S PATENT WATER-BOXES,
! which arc believed to be ten times more durable than
any other, by those who have made a fair trial of them,
and are infallibly secure against fire by friction. His
fine Gins will gin Mastodon Cotton as well as any
other saw Gin can.
His agents will visit planters generally, and exhibit
specimens of his last improvements, and point out tbeir
advantages in time for all to engage and be supplied
before next ginning season; or engagements can be
made by letter, directed to him, CLINTON, JONES
COUNTY, GEORGIA.
Gins will be delivered at the purchaser’s residence
in any part of the State except the Cherokee Coun
ties, where they will be left at the Rail Road Depot
most convenient to the purchaser. All warranted to
perform wd’, if used according to the printed direc
tions sent with each.
