Agricultural.
The tirat animal meeting of the “Southern
Central Agricultural Association ” was held at
,j,e Stone Mountain, in this county, on Wed- |
nes( j a y last. There were a great many per
sons present —probably, fifteen or sixteen hun
irod —among whom we were pleased to recog
nize many familiar faces from the low-country.
There were quite a number of the beauty and |
fashion of the State there, also, whose pres
ence added very much to the brilliancy of the 1
occasion.
The specimens of Stock, Agricultural Im
plements, Domestic Manufactures, Produce,
Ac., exhibited at the Fair were very credita
hie, considering the inclemency of the weather
and the short time that has intervened since the
formation ol the Society. We regret that we
could not procure a complete list of all the va
rious articles. The President of the Associa- i
tion, Hon. Thos. Stocks, of Greene, exhibited
two specimens of the Lemon raised by him
self, and his estimable lady sent in a most beau
tiful Boquet composed of several varieties of
the Dahlia and other rare flowers. M iss Laura
Farrar of Decatur, Mrs. Eve of Augusta, Mrs.
Hayden, and other ladies whose names we did
not learn, contributed some beautiful speci
mens of Embroidery, Lace and crewel work,
Table Covers, Bed Spreads, &c. We saw two
pair of very fine cotton Half-Hose lying upon
the table, and learned by a slip of paper appen
ded to each, that they were spun, twisted and
Hftit by two young girls, one eight and the
other ten years old. There were two fine
specimens of Georgia Marble from the quarry
of Messrs. Atkinson, Tate & Roberts, of Chero
kee county —one of the clouded Marble and
the other pure white. We heard a gentleman
from Macon, who has traveled much, say that
the white specimen was equal to the best
Egyptian Marble he ever saw. Mr. Hard
wick, of Hancock, exhibited a specimen of very
fine wheat, and a gentleman of this county —
we do not remember his name—sent in a speci
men ol Corn which attracted much attention.
Some excellent Leather, manufactured in the
vicinity of the Mountain, was also on exhibition ;
as were also, a specimen of Brooms and Wil
low Baskets, manufactured at the Etowah Man
ufactory, inf Cass county. There were several
Agricultural implements of Georgia manufac
ture exhibited, but we could not learn the
names of the inventors ; also, several speci
mens of Cotton and Woolen Goods, Yarns,
&c. The official report of the proceedings
will no doubt be full and complete ; and, as
we have been promised an early copy, we
shall defer further remark upon the articles
until it is received.
The next annual meeting of the Association,
and Fair, will be held at the village near the
Mountain, on the second Wednesday in Au
gust, 1848.
New Cotton.—We stated yesterday the ar
rival of two bales of new cotton from the plan
tation of Gen. A. G. Carter. We learn that
Mr. Turnbull has already ginned and baled
forty bales of new cotton, at his new and mag
nificent plantation near St. Francisville. From
all we can learn, the prospects for a fine cotton
crop were never more cheering. We sincere
ly rejoice at this. The cotton planters have
had a hard time of it for some years hack. It
was time that they were coming in for their
share of the general prosperity which has bless
ed our country of late.— N. O. Delta, 1 1th inst.
Jibes and Taunts.— The editors of the Sa
vannah Georgian seem disposed to make
sport of the generous and noble feelings which
prompted Gen. Clinch to feed the hungry and
war-worn soldiers, on their return from the
ever memorable campaign in Florida, and com
pares his conduct on that occasion to the doings
and sayings of the perfidious Mexican in offer
ing food to the Americans, and then abusing
them as worthless dogs. These views of the
humane conduct of a patriot and a soldier, will
be duly appreciated by the people. Our co
temporaries seem to have imbibed the impres
sion also, that no mancan be a patriot, or worth
a groat, that has not won his laurels in the
M exican war. This may, or may notha true.
We have never withheld all due honor
from those who deemed it their duty to enter
that service, but we cannot see why services
m defence of our immediate country —our
wives and children, and homes —are not as im
portant and worthy of reward as those perform
ed in invading a foreign countiy. Other men
might have done well in marching to crush a
foreign foe at the request of the Government,
but we avow our belief that Gen. Clinch did
better when he flung himself, and offered sa
crifice between the uplifted tomahawk and
scalping-knife of the savages, and the helpless
women and children of Georgia. No jibes of
even a soldier of the Mexican war. can bring
discredit on the patriotism and noble private
benevolence of such a man. What say the
soldiers of the Florida war ? what say the
women of Georgia, whose homes and whose
tender offsprings Gen. Clinch periled his life
to save from scenes of savage butchery ? We
know your answer. —Columbus Enquirer.

The following certificate is from the
Rev. John Harrington, Sumter District, S. C. :
June sth, 1846. —I hereby certify that I hive used
Spencer’s Pills, during the last and preser years,
and find them to answer the purposes as slated by
the proprietor, viz : to act (in small doses) as a mild
and ready aperient to the system —to remove or pre
vent Cosfiveuess —as may be required without pain
or sickness. Os the many remedies I have made use
ot during a period of thirty years affliction, 1 believe
them the mildest and most effectual.
John Harrington.
Johnston county, N. C., Oct. 5, 1846. —This cer
tifies that in April, 1845, I was taken with the Mea
sles, from which I had not fully recovered, when in
An oust following I was exposed to the water (while
buifding a Mill) which resulted in an attack of Chills
and Fever, for which I took large quantities of Fever
and Ague Medicine, without finding any relief, until
Jan. 1846, from which time I missed my Chills until
the first of June, when they returned in a more vio
lent and aggravated form—my skin became swarthy
and my eyes turned yellow. 1 tried various medi
cines but with no success until I procured of Williams
<fe Haywocd, Druggists at Raleigh, a Bottle qf Spen
cer’s Bitters and a box of Pills; and in two weeks
steady use of them in accordance with directions, I
effected a permanent and radical cure, and from that
time to the present I have enjoyed good health —much
better than I had enjoyed for sometime previous to the
attack of the Measles. N, G. Gully.
Ipf The above medicine, fresh and genuine, is for
sale by Haviland, Risley &Co., Wm. K. Kitch
en and Thomas Barkett, and all the principal
Druggists in Augusta; A. A. Cleveland, Washing

which has gained such notoriety in the cure of Fever
and Ague, and other bilious affections, may be found
at the Drug Store of HAVILAND, RISLEY & CO.
This medicine was prepared by a regular physician, j
and is the result of an extensive practice of several
years in a bilious climate. Those who have used it j
themselves, or seen its salutary effects upon others,
need no farther evidence of its great value. A small

lost in procuring the right medicine at once, and get

SARSAPARILLA has been found in numerous in
j stances to be an efficient remedy, operating mildly and
pleasantly on the general system, purifying and
cleansing the vital fluids, giving tone and energy to
the nervous system, and imparting stamina to the de
bilitated frame. Numbers who have taken it, mere
ly with a view of alleviating their sufferings, have,
by using it a short time, to their infinite pleasure and

MOUNT EAGLE TRIPOLI.
A REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
geologists to be a great rarity in nature, and
known to them by the name of Tripoli, has lately been
discovered in this country, although but in one bed, of
very narrow limits, all owned by the “Mount Eagle
Manufacturing Company” incorporated for the sole
purpose of its manufacture.
This article is excellent for burnishing and cleaning
all finished metallic and glass surfaces, such as gold,
silver, brass, Britannia and steel ware, window glass,
dbe. Nothin? has ever yet been discovered equal to
the pure Tripoli, and the common language of the con
sumer is, it is the best thing I ever saw. The genuine
article is for sale bv the exclusive agent for Augusta,
ap27-tf ' WM. HAINES.
