AUGUSTA MARKET.
Tuesday, December 21, P. M.
REMARKS. —During the past week business has
generally undergone vary little if any change, from
the stale of things existing for several weeks past.
The transactions in Cotton continue limited and mo
ney is consequently quite scarce, which imparts to all
business rather a gloomy aspect for the season.
COTTON. —At the date of our last weekly report
we were in receipt of Liverpool advices by Telegraph
to the 19tb ult., but had not then received the private
letters in consequence of the failure of the mail.
These have since come to hand and as they confirm
ed generally the Telegraphic accounts, the market
during the week has exhibited rather more firmness
than for some time past, and a slight advance upon our
quotations has been obtained. This change in the
feeling of dealers has been caused as much perhaps
by the impression now becoming very general that
the crop will not exceed 2,100,000 bales, as by the
character of the European accounts.
The receipts in the Atlantic ports are still small. „k
compared with last year, while New Orleans and
Mobile have increased only 62,000 bales.
The sales of the week are 2178 bales, from Ware
houses, at the following rates: 1 bale at 5 ; 2 at 51;
46 at Ci ; 24 at 6 9-16; 29at6|; 1 at 6 11-16; 115
at 6| ; 15 at 6 13-16; 87 at 6$ ; 517 at 7; 52 at 7
1-16 ; 564 at 7* ; 55 at 7 3-16 ; 592 at 7j ; 13 at 7| ;
and 67 at 7£ cents. We quote middling to good mid
dling, 6f a7 ; middling fair to fair, 7$ a 7|; choice
7k cents in square bales, round bales \ a f cents less,
at which rates the market closes firm, with a limited
amount on sale and a fair demand.
Up to the dates below, the receipts at all the ports
of the United States arc as follows ;
Ports. 1847. 1846.
New Orleans Dec. 14 295,206 240,563
Mobile, Dec. 14 66,037 46,728
Charleston, Dec. 17 44,435 138,524
Savannah, Dec. 17 27,411 66,943
Florida, Dee. 2 7,628 7,260
Texas, Nov. 26 5,605 1,864
Virginia, Dec. 1 1,100 3,400
North Carolina, Dec, 4 70 735
Total 447,492 526,097
Making a deficiency in the receipts up to the above
dates of 78,605 bales.
FLOUR—The Flour market since our last report,
has exhibited considerable activity. In the early part
of the week several large sales were made for ship
ment to other markets, while there has been a very
fair demand for home consumption. The quoted
prices of last week are fully sustained, and we now
give Ssi and $6 per bbl. as our extremes, remarking
ffiat nearly all the sales made are at ss| a ss£.
M HEAT—Soveral large lots of Wheat have ar
r‘ved lately per Railroad, a portion of which has been
forwarded through to Charleston. We hear of no
' r ansactions by which we might establish rates, al
ffiougb We believe $1 per bushel to be the fair market
CORN. Our last review left the Corn market in
a very animated state with prices tending, upward.
The advance of 2 cents per bushel then noticed has
j been obtained in nearly every instance, and frequent
sales are reported to us at 57 cents per bushel, sacks
: included. Ear corn sells from wagons at 45 a 50 cents.
The receipts of both kinds have been heavy.
OATS, PEAS AND MEAL.—Large sales of Oats
have been made at 37 k cents, and in some cases 40
cents per bushel. The supply is good and the demand
light. Pea .s are still sold at from 45 to 50 cents, the
article is dull. We continue to quote Meal at 50 cts,
at which rate we are informed several lAs have been
sold.
GROCERIES.—A moderate business has been
done in Groceries throughout the week, principally
by oar retail dealers. The demand is chiefly by
country orders, for holiday supplies. The staple ar
ticles of Sugar, Coffee and Molasses are unchanged
in price.
BAGGING and ROPE—The Bagging market
has been very inactive, and we have another quiet
week to report. The sales of all kinds have been
very limited. Some accessions to the stock of Gunny
have been received. We repeat our former remarks
in reference to Bale Rope—it is scarce, with a good
inquir}', and sells from store at 10 cents.
LIQUORS.—The demand for Liquors of all de
scriptions has been well kept up. N. O. Whiskey
is in much request, and the stock being light, the ar
ticle has advanced —we quote 31 and 33 cents, N.
E. Rum has been sold in small lots at 36 cents.
BACON AND LARD. —No transactions hare ta
ken place in either of these articles, and we have no
observations to make in relation to them. We hear
of no receipts.
FEATHERS arc quick at 28 and 30 ct«. The sup
ply has been increased by late arrivals, and there is a
good demand.
SALT. —Large quantities of both sack and bulk
Salt have been sold during the past week. The cold
frosty weather has caused a heavy demand. Prices
are very firm; we quote Sack Salt $1.55 in lots and
1.62 at retail, bulk 40 a 45 cts.
EXCHANGE remains unchanged.
FREIGHTS.—The River continues in fine beata
ble condition. Freights to Savannah and Charleston
are improving, rates are unchanged. Up freights are
lighter than previously reported.
CHARLESTON, Dec. 22. Cotton.—' The Up
land market remained very quiet yesterday, with no
disposition on the part of buyers to operate. Sales
70 bales only, at 7f a 7|.
Rice. —The market continued with a good demand,
similar to Saturday, and at the same firmness of pri
ces. Sales from 700 to 800 bbls. at extremes from
$3 1-16 a s3k: principally. ~ *>og-
NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 15, P. M. — Cotton. —No

OP THE GROWTH OP 1147.
THE UNDERSIGNED has received a great
quantity of BOW-WOOD, which is consider
ed the cheapest article to make Fences or Hedge Rows.
After three years growth these trees form a hedge
which no animal can pass. The wood is suitable to
make Axle-Trees of Gigs and Wheel-Spokes; an
excellent Dye -Stuff can also be made of it, and the
leaves are superior to those of the morus multicaulis
for the raising of Silk-Worms. The price is below
