Late From Savta Fk.—We have intelli '
gence from Santa Fe to the 20th October, re
ceived at St. Louis on the 13rh inst. Several
recruiting officers had arrived at St. Louis, and
were to commence the service in a few days,
for the per pose of obtaining eight hundred re
cruits, necessary to fill up the complement of
the Illinois and St. Louis battalions. In the
former deaths were of daily occurrence, but the
latter were more healthy.
Fifteen hundred American troops and twelve
pieces of artillery were to be despatched against
Chihuahua, and three companies were already
on iht; toad, hut had halted below Albuquerque,
wailing reinforcements, as it was rumored that
the Mexicans had been concentrated at LI Pas
>o. Pho American troops were expected to
iin’et with a stubborn resistance either there or
at Chihuahua.
The command that had arrived at St. Louis
had suffered greatly from cold and hunger on
their tedious route from Santa Fe.
Larthquake iv Chili.— The followin'* par
ticulars are extracted by the New York Herald
from a Lima paper of Nov. 7 :
“On the Bth of October last, at 11 o’clock
in the morning, a series of earthquakes, which
lasted two minutes without interruption, spread
consternation and alarm throughout the city of
\ alparaiso. No house was thrown down, al
though some were injured. The towers of the
Matriz and Custom House waved to and fro
in a fearful manner: the latter is moved a little
out of perpendicular.
“ Uy news from Tillapel, we learn the almost
total destruction of La Liguaand Petorca. The
direction of the earthquake was evidently from
the north. Coquimbo suffered extremely ; its
best public buildings were reduced to a mass of
ruins. The oscillations of the earth were
frightful. Ths whole population slept in the
open field; even the stones in the rivers were
raised from their beds and thrown to a distance.”
Special Jfoticcs.

Medical Card. --Doctor MEALS tenders
kis professional services, in the various branches of
medicine, to the citizens of Augusta and vicinity.

pied by Fugs, and J. J. R. Flournoy, Esqs., on

fjf Sands’ Sarsaparilla,--Exhausted by the
heats of summer, the vital functions at this season of
the year are seldom performed with the vigor and
regularity necessary to perfect health. The secretive
organs but lazily fulfil their duty ; the digestive pow
ers become relaxed ; while the surface of the body but
imperfectly exhales the waste water which should
pa»s oil through the pores, and the excretory organs
do not act with their accustomed vigor. The conse
quences are cutaneous eruptions, running-sores,
glandular swellings, a morbid condition of the fiver,
dyspepsia, (fee. In some cases one of these results,
iti others all of them ensue. To effect a cure it is ne
cessary that the stomach be invigorated, the fluids
purified, the circulation regulated, the absorbents
stimulated to a healthy action, and the pores opened.
The tonic, antiseptic, and slightly aperient properties
of this preparation, render it peculiarly adapted to
these purposes. By its renovating influence a new
impetus is imparted to the whole physical machinery,
and Nature is enabled to shake off the elements of
disease, which, accumulating during the hot summer,
now begin to develope themselves in various danger
ous and painful forms.

DIED.
In Lincoln county, at the residence of his father
on iließih December, mst., Isaac Hampton Davie'
m the 32d year of his age, leaving a wife to whom he
had been married a little less than two years, a father
and mother, two brothers, and many relations and
friends, to mourn over his departure.
As u husband he was kind and affectionate ; as a
son he was dutiful and obedient, avoiding scrupulous
ly any dereliction of duty that was likely to wound
the feelings or mar the peace of the family circle ; as
a master he was indulgent, kind and forbearing, as
was fully demonstrated by his servants visiting him
during his illness, and manifesting the deepest solici
tude for his recovery. He was no member of any
Church, but the writer of this notice can bear testi
mony to his moral deportment for the few years which
he was permitted to sojourn among us, and his friends
who visited him during his illness, can bear further
testimony as to his prospects in a future slate. Seve
ral Divines having visited him a short time before he
departed, he gave the brightest evidence of his ac
ceptance with his God, —expressed an entire resigna
tion to His will, and said that he was neither unwil
ling nor afraid to die, nor had he any doubt of being
saved by the atonement of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He talked to his friends as long as he was able to
speak, and when unable to speak out, in a low whis
per saying “Glory, Glory,” he sunk into the arms
of Jesus. He is gone no doubt from Earth to Hea
ven - and while I am penning, this notice, mingling
his voice with Angels in anthems of Praise to his God.
From these evidences we are assured that our loss
is his eternal gain. We therefore mourn not as
those who have no hope, so
Time, like an ever rolling stream,
Bears all its sons awry.

COTTON SEED
Having no other vocation by
which I could support even ray small family,
aside from planting, I am necessarily as vitally in
terested in all the advantages that can be gained by
culture, seed, die., die., as any other person. I have
as assiduously as most persons, labored not so much to
make the dimes as I have to secure the character of a
good planter and farmer. Yet, without the dimes, one
cannot labor so effectively, and as they are considered
the test of good qualities, I have not entirely looked
over their worth or acquirement. 1 have no idea of
puffing any cotton seed, more especially having them
for sale, nor any desire to puff myself in having the
best seed. My object being, in thus premising my
offer, to show that my interest s like others, and that,
laboring for success, my expe iience is worth attention
—only as much as that of anyr other man who always
remains at home, and attends to his own business.
1 have been purchasing seed every year whilst 0.1
this place since 1833 —absent ’37, ’3B and ’39. I
have closely noticed the yield; generally once or
twice during the year, I try the turn out from the gin
stand. I have planted every exploded variety that
has been brought into notice, not neglecting the Mas
todon, but never yet giving up my stock seed. When
I meet with an excellent variety for yield and pok
ing qualities, I place that seed with my stock seed. I
reserve for planting from the best cotton I make, up to,
say first of October, and on adding to ray selection
every year or two, I keep up a good producing artie'e.
My seed are not of the whitest Mexican, nor yet are
they of the purest biow T n varieties, being really a
mixed variety of what I have found to be the best
Petit Gulf or Mexican seeds.
These seed are thought to be good enough to be
bought by my neighbors, and 1 only offer them for
sale at a distance, because the home demand is limited,
and injtoo small quantities.
I will put them up in three bushel sacks of twenty
five pounds each, thus there can be no false measur
ing. I have never weighed seed at twenty-five pounds
but once, they will average say twenty-three. My
price will be, delivered on a boat in Vicksburg, in
good order, 82.50 cents per sack. I will send none
unless ordered by the Editor or Proprietors ofthis paper
w’hose orders will be always attended to with despatch.
I propose to any one making arrangements so as to
place the funds in the hands of my friend, James
Martin, of Columbia, S. C., and who will lake 100 to
500 sacks, to deduct 10 to 20 per cent, on this rate ;
nah, making said arrangement for 500 sacks at 810UU.
Should any planter in Carolina or Georgia, desire
the Petit Gulf Seed, and will order enough to pay
me for the labor, and make the order in time, I will
go below, select the seed and attend to the sacking.
I do not desire a large profit, but enough to pay me for
lime and trouble. I believe 1 can purchase seed be
low cheaper than I can afford to send them to Vicks
burg at, but at the same time, I would not exchange
all my seed with any one in the Gulf, though theirs
might be belter. 1 offer my seed at what mine
usually cost me, 75 cents per bushel, and I add cost
of hauling, sacking, die., at the same time I will put
up full weight. Address,
M. W. Philips, Edwards', Miss.
1 place the above price on my seed, believing that
planters can well afford to pay that price, and I do not
place any fictitious value on my own seed. The price
will pay me well, and planters bad better pay for a
good producing, easy picking, early maturing seed,
than to have ordinary seed hauled to them. 11
