CHRONICLE & SENTINEL.
Extraordinary Longevity. The Laurens
ville (S. C.) Herald says : We had an oppor
tunity a few days ago of seeing a Negro wo
man. the properiyofa gentleman near Stoney
Point, Abbeville District, who had arrived to
the advanced age of 115, in perfect possession
of all her faculties, and as lively as a lark. This
is a fair specimen of the treatment slaves re
ceive at the South. Will northern fanatics
longer speak of the inhumanity exercised to
wards our negro population, while the greater
portion of that population at the North, are
in the most abject state of destitution and
wretchedness, without the slightest prospect
of an alleviation of their sorrows, and the fear
ful looking for of the very dregs of the deepest
woe and wretchedness in advanced age 1 Will
they then longer speak of philanthropy and
humanity to the poor negro. Philanthropy
and humanity indeed !
What does it Mean?—At a very spirited
meeting of the “Sons of Temperance,” at
Providence, R. L, last Sunday, a resolution
was unanimously passed, appointing a commit
tee of six to wait upon the Rev. Clergy of the
city, and request them to “sign the pledge.”
