California and Oregon Mails.—Official
information has been received at the Postoffice
Department, that the U. S. steampacket “Cali
fornia,” built under contract with the Secreta
ry of the Navy, eventually for the service of
that department of th§ Government, but in the
mean time to be employed in the transporta
tion of the mails, will leave New-York for
California and Oregon, via. Cape Horn on
Monday the 2d day of October next.
Mail bags will be made up at New-lork, to
be forwarded by said steamer for Rio Janeiro,
Valparaiso, and Callao ; also, for ban Diego,
Santa Barbara, Monterey and San I' rancisco,
in California, and Astoria in Oregon.
The inland and sea postage on all letters and
newspapers, to be forwarded by said packet
for places not within the territory of the United
Stales, is to be prepaid at the office where
mailed.
The ship postage for single letters, not ex
ceeding half an ounce, will be 24 cents to Rio
Janeiro, Valparaiso, or Callao; and for each
newspaper, pamphlet, or price current, 3 cts.
In each case the regular inland postage to New
York is to be added.
To Panama, each letter, as aforesaid, will be
rated at 30 cents; and to San Diego, Santa
Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, or Astoria,
40 cents, without any addition for inland pos
tage.
Issuf. of Bounty Land Warrants.— The
Commissioner of the Public Lands having re
ceived many letters complaining of delay in the
reception of bounty land warrants, has address
ed a letter to the editor of the Washington
Union, from which we gather the following
facts, viz : That of the 40,000 regulars enlisted
since the commencement of the Mexican war,
35,000 were probably milled to bounty lands,
and of the 60,000 volunteers enrolled since that
lime, 55,000 are also entitled to them. So 90,-
000 may be claimed of the government. Os
these it may be that 10,000 will not press for
warrants immediately, and may not at all. Af
ter deducting the 26,367 already issued from
the Pension Office, and duly registered in the
Land Office, there remains 63,633 still to be is
sued. Recently the number of clerks in the
Pension Office has been so increased as to en
able them to prepare and send to ihe Land Of
fice 200 a day. Thus it will be about 318 work
ing days, or some 13 or 14 months, before the
warrants for which immediate demands are
made will get to his office, where he says they
are being registered and sent out .*u» fast as re
ceived.
The Kings of Saturn. —Mr. Mitchell, of
the Cincinnati Observatory, in a communica
tion dated S epfc 2d, states that for several
mouths the planet Saturn has been seen, dives
ted of his usual appendages, the rings. This
is occasioned by the fact that the illuminated
side of the rings has been turned from the earth,
and of course the dark side is invisible. The
thickness of the rings is estimated at about 100
miles, while the distance from the earth is
about 900 millions of miles. The last disap
pearance of Saturn’s rings took place in 1832,
and the next will not occur in fifteen years.
W ell Answered. —A violent Locofoco, on
ly recently arrived from Washington, met an
acquaintance of his a few days since, and sha
king hands with him most cordially, (as a good
Democrat always does on the eve of an elec
tion,) observed, in a very insinuating manner,
well, my good fellow al ways on the right side ?
Always. Oh! then I’m to understand that you
are going to vote for Cass and Butler ? By no
means; I shall vole for Old Rough and Ready.
But how can you vote for Taylor without vo
ting for Fillmore, the Abolitionist? What
would you wish me to do, says the other, good
humoredly? I am acting like the physician,
who does not hesitate to sacrifice a leg, or an
arm, with a view of saving the head ; and for
me, Taylor is the very head and soul. Good
morning.— N. O. Bee.
The British Mint does not coin enough to
pay the interest of the national debt. The ave
rage of British coinage for thirty years, as we
fhovved yesterday, is seventeen million dollars
per annum, while the interest of British debt is
over twenty-four millions. At this rate, with
out compounding, the interest of this debt will
exceed the issue of the mint seven hundred
million dollars in a century to come, supposing
the debt not to be increased, which supposition
is scarcely possible.— Ex.
The Mackerel Fishery. —A gentleman
who came up from Point Escuminac a few
days ago, says the P. E. Island Gazette, in
forms us that during the last fortnight there
have been from forty to fifty American
schooners about two miles from the point, the
crews of which have been busily occupied in
catching mackerel, —and so abundant are the
fish, that they have hired persons from the
shore to assist them. Some of them had 300
barrels on board. —Halifax Courier.

Medicinal Uses of the Wild Cherry.
—Ever since the settlement of America, Wild Cherry
has been known to possess very important medicinal
virtues. Every body knew this fact, but nobody
knew how to extract its essential properties. Every
mother gives Wild Cherry tea to her children for
worms, for colds, and for almost every disease; and
adults throughout our country are in the habit of ma
king a compound of syrup of wild cherry bark, and
other ingredients to he used in spring as an antidote
to complasuts incident to that changeful season. It
is found by experiment that the wild cherry possesses
even tar more important qualities than was ascribed
to it. For the first stages of Consumption, Asthma,
no matter how long standing, Coughs, Liver Com
plaints, etc., it is proved to he the best raedcine
known to man. Dr. Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cher
ry a chemical extract, combined with a similar
extract from Tar, which enhances its value. Its suc
cess in curing pulmonary diseases, in almost every
stage, after our best physicians could do no more, has
astonished the faculty, and led them to confess'that
Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry possesses a principle
heretofore unknown among medical men.

Ij’Hasting 1 8 Compound Syrup of
Naphtha. --Not only a positive but a warranted
cure for Consumption, and all other Diseases of the
Lungs!
Dr. Hasting’s Compound Syrup of Naphtha
is the great remedy for Consumption, Decline , Asth
ma, Spitting of Blood, Night Sweats, Husky
Throat, Wasting of the Flesh, Bronchitis, Coughs,
Colds, and all Dieases of the Chest and Lungs.
This celebrated preparation is pleasant to the taste,
and is so speedy in its operations, that patients plain
ly feel its good elfects in a few minutes after taking
the first dose.
When Dr. Hastings had discovered the virtue of
Naphtha four years ago, he announced it in a private
circular to a number of distinguished physicians in
various parts of England, with a request that they
would put its medical properties to the lest, and re
port accordingly. The result was a host of testimo
nials of the most favorable character, nearly all of
which agreed in certifying that no medicine they had
ever used could bear any comparison with it in re
lieving hacking coughs, curing Diarrhoea and stop
ping night sweats. It was also generally remarked
to have a wonderful effect in increasing the appetite,
weight, and spirit of patients ; and lo be a powerfully
efficient remedy in Billions and Asthmatic diseases.
Os these testimonials, which were all published at the
time, in th e Medical Recorder , nine spoke of its ex
traordinary influence in cases of Consumption—each
corroborating Dr. Hastings’ opinion, that he had actu
ally discovered the groat secret, so long and vainly
sought for, namely, a preparation that would stop the
formation of Turbercles on the lungs, remove those
already formed, and thus cure the most fatal of all
maladies, and which had previously been regarded as
being altogether incurable. Dr. Williamson of Man
chester thus writes*
“ Under its influence, I have seen the emaciated
being, on whose brow Death had seemed to have set
his seal, acquire invigoralion and strength ; and ex
change his early mornings of intense sutfering and
distressing cough, for the calm repose which alone ac
companies sound health.”
Dr. Ware, of Liverpool, says:—“l regard Hast
ings’ Syrup of Naphtha as one of the first medical
discoveries of any age, and consider its agency in
curing Consumption as established beyond all doubt
or question.” Dr, Boyd of Lancaster, “ Hails it as
the great consumptive antidote and cure ;” and Dr,
Hamilton, of Rate, pronounces it “the only known
remedy wdiicli may be relied on for removing Tuber
cules from the Lungs, and preventing the formation of
others.”
Hastings’ Compound Syrup of Naphtha is now be
ing used in nearly all our hospitals, and is also coming
into rapid use among all our best physicians, for
coughs, colds, and all diseases of the lungs. It has
been recommended in the worst stage of consumption
by the celebrated physician, Dr. Mott, of New York;
and Dr. Arnold, of Savannah, Ga., writing to the
agent at New York, under date of Jan. 30, 1848,
says : “ 1 received the half-dozen Hastings’ Naphtha
Syrup ordered from you, and am convinced that
Naphtha is the principal ingredient. Inclosed is
twenty-five dollars, for which you will send me two
dozen and a half bottles. I have two patients in the
Marine Hospital, whom I think will be benelitted by
it.” Price SI per bottle. For sale by

good’s India Cliolagogue upon constitutions
impaired and injured by a residence in bilious cli
mates, is one of its most valuable qualities. There
are many constitutions which become gradually un
dermined by miasmal causes, without even a day’s
actual confinement. In such cases, the Cholagogue
acts like a charm—the sallow complexion, loss of ap
petite, languor, weariness and depression of spirits,
with other unpleasant symptoms which render life a
burden—all yield to this remedy if only faithfully
used according to the directions of the pamphlet
which accompanies each bottle. For sale by

MOBILE, Sept. 15, P. M.—Cotton.—' The receipts
since the Bth inst., inclusive, amount to 2,422 bales,
exports for the same period 175 bales, viz : to New
Orleans—leaving a stock on hand not cleared this
evening of 24,559 against 20,207 bales same time last
year.
Our last review of the market left it steady but dull.
Sales of the week 2000 bales, middling closing at 5$
We have now to report one of the dullest weeksof
the season—the sales of the week being only 1000
bales. We cannot note any marked decline, still the
tone of the market, particularly during the past three
days has been decidedly in favor of buyers. On yes-
terday and Ihe day previous, not 100 bales were sold.
This dullness may in some measures have been caused
by vessels demanding a higher rate of freight, com
bined with an almost perfect indifference on the part
of factors to sell unless at full rales. Buyers are not
prepared to pay over the nominal rates quoted, and we
may look for an inanimate market for some time to
come, unless more disposition is evinced bv holders
to meet the reduced scale of orders.
The receipts are free, taking in view the impedi
ment to navigation by our rivers being low, and now
open to only light draught boats. The quaility of the
new crop coming to hand, is not so good as the earlier
receipts—we trust the pesent fine weather will tend
much to improve that defect. For picking the wea
ther is as good as could be wished, and we are much
gratified tc learn the accounts from all parts of the
Slates are now of the most favorable character for the
incoming year. We continue our quotations of last

EUROPEAN AGENCY.
FOR THE RECOVERY OP DOR
MANT AND IMPROPERLY WITHHELD
REAL AND PERSONAL ESTATE; the Settle
ment and Arbitration of Commercial, 'l'rading
and other Debts; Securing Patents for Inven
tions in Great Britain , Ireland, and the Colonies
and Dependencies thereto belonging , and Negoti
ating for the Purchase or Sale of the same. ~
The principal object in the establishment of this
Agency is to set at rest in the most satisfactory and
economical manner possible, the numerous claims for
property which citizens of the United States really
have, or imagine they possess in England and else
where.
The efforts of designing and unscrupulous men have
been actively engaged in influencing a belief on this
subject in many quarters, with a view to petty pecu
lation ; and evidences of the fact have been so fre
quently brought to light as to render it urgently ne
cessary that an office be established having for its
olyect the satisfaction of those who have have been
deluded, and to establish the claims of such as are the
rightful heirs to doubtful property, or that which is
improperly withheld.
Articles in leading journals in the principal cities
of the Union are frequently appearing, headed
“Townly Estate;” “A Great Fortune'for some
body ;” “ Meetings ofthe Houghton’s ai. Worcester;”
“ Chase Meetings,” &c. (fee., the authors of which
are generally lawyers seeking practice, or adventu
rers, whose only object is to feed upon public creduli
ty, by producing an excitement which may realize
for themselves immediate gains, and who are, gener
ally speaking, without the slightest knowledge'of the
subjects they put forth.
The evidences of this being a fact are everywhere
apparent, as in no One single instance have their ill
founded expectations been realized ; and it is *vith a
view to the correction of this evil that the subscriber
has effected the mest extensive arrangements to satis
fy the inquiring, as well as the curiosity of those, who,
influenced by family connection or otherwise, wish
to pursue the investigation of matters often involving
results of the most stupendous magnitude.
As regards real estate in England, the bulk of it is
subject to the laws of Entail and Primogeniture; and
ever since the revolution in 1688, the principal estates
have been subjected to the changes which always
ensue on revolution, confusion, and change of dynas
ty ; and although there have been special laws passed
for particular purposes, all those which have refer
ence to this subject, and which wore passed subse
quent thereto, are still available in cases of legitimate
right. It is not, however, intended in this advertise
ment, to refer antecedently to the American revolu
tion of 1776, at which period, a great number ot per
sons etitled in various ways to property, abandonded
the same by joining the revolutionary party. This
act, in itself, was sufficient to lead to confiscation
where it was directly held by such individuals; but
when those abandoning the same were next in suc
cession to the then possessors, the case became alter
ed; and alienation from home and family were made
the barriers to rightful inheritance.
Another fruitful source of investigation is found in
the Unclaimed Dividend Book of the Bank of Eng
land, and this, furnishing as it does, each English
name that has ever existed as a holder of funded pro
perty, is the main reliance of the unprincipled traders
in public credulity.
The modes of investment are exceedingly numer
ous in all parts ot Europe, but in England particular
ly so; and the subscriber is prepared to show the
facilities which he possesses, for an investigation in
any of the means above alluded to. Besides all these,
there is property positively bequeathed, and which,
in consequence of the absence of the parties to whom
demised, becomes involved in and subject to the laws
of the Court of Chancery,
In all cases, even of supposed family connexion,
the most positive and satisfactory information can be
afforded as to the facts connected with the members of
families, no matter how remote the date, or seeming
ly difficult the investigation ; and where the case has
already been undertaken by any of the numerous
persons who pretend to a knowledge of this business,
and who have altogether failed in obtaining, or omit
ted to afford the information sought by the victims of
their speciousness and delusion, the matter is the
more readily undertaken, because of the greater sat
isfaction in aiding where the pretences of others have
obtained so much unmerited confidence.
In the settlement of Commercial, Trading and
other Debts, the necessary legal and mercantile
acumen will be brought to bear; an experience of
half a century in this particular branch, is the best
evidence that can be afforded of the ability that will
be bestowed on matters coming under this head.
Inventors and others requiring Patent Rights se
cured in any or all parts of Europe, can have the
same effected at a very trifling charge over and above
the usual fees required in any given country. Every
information respecting the probable expenses, and the
modus operandi will at all times be cheerfully af
forded ; and the facilities, particularly in England, for
disposing of the right, &c., are of the most extensive
character. Introductions are also offered to men of
wealth and high respectability. Whatever belongs
to this department is ample. The attention, there
fore, of 11ic public in general is particularly solicited
to this branch of the Agency,
Communications by letter are requested to be post
paid. BENTHAM FABIAN,
