Virginia. A bill for erecting a Monument
to the illustrious Washington, passed the
House of Delegates of Virginia, unanimously,
on the 22a instant. It had previously passed
the Senate on the same day. The monument
is to be placed on Capitol Square. Richmond.
This appropriate day, for a purpose so cred
itable to Virginia, was selected, it is stated, at
the suggestion of the State Historical Society.
The same day was selected for the ceremony
of presenting a Sword to the gallant Lieut.
Col Matthew M. Payne, of the U. S. Army,
which had been previously voted by the Vir
ginia Legislature. The Hall of the House of
Delegates was the place selected for the pur
pose, and the ceremonies were of the most
gratifying and exciting character. The Sword
was a very elegant one, on which was inscribed
—“ Presented by Virginia to her distinguished
son. Lieut. Col. Matthew M. Payne, for his
gallantry and conduct at Palo Alto and Resaca
de la Palma.”
Ou r readers (says the Richmond Times) need
not be informed that Col. Payne served with
great distinction in each of these memorable
battles, and was badly wounded at the latter.
He received a ball in the hip early in the ac
tion, but sat on his horse throughout the battle,
and at its close had to be lifted from the saddle.

tober 29, 1840.—Dr. Seth W. Fowle—Dear Sir
This may certify that I am about seventy-five years
of age; was born and have always resided in this
town. In October, 1845, I took cold and for six months
was afflicted with the influenza and the worst cough
I have ever experienced during my whole life. My
self and friends had strong doubts of my ever recov
ering. 1 got a bottle of Schenck’s Syrup; it did me
no good. 1 then applied to a physician, who prescribed
for me several times, but did not cure me. At last
nay physician advised me to take Dr. Wistar’s cele
brated Balsam of Wild Cherry, which has performed
so many remarkable cures. I did so, and I believe
that saved nay life ; my cough left me entirely, when
I had taken a single bottle. lam now enjoying good
health. If I ever again have a similar attack, or any
of my family, I shall immediately resort to Dr. Wis
tar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry. "The physician who
recommended this Balsam to me, was induced to do
so from his own personal observation and experi
ence in using it. One very strong case of cure of a
young man occurred in this immediate vicinity, of
which Dr. Homan informed me.

AUGUSTA MARKET.
Weekly Report Tuebdat, P. M.
COTTON.—Our market opened on Wednesday
with a good demand, which continued until Friday,
and sales to some extent were made at prices about
the same as prevailed previous to the steamer’s news of
the 27th of January, but the Telegraphic accounts
received on Friday night created quite an improved
feeling amongst holders, and they advanced their rates
fully i and in some instances fc.—sales to the extent
of about 800 bales were made at an advance varying
from ito |c. On Monday there was less demand,
and sellers being firm little was done as buyers were
not willing to pay the prices asked, or really more
than old rates, as from the low state of the river great
difficulty is experienced in shipping Cotton to Savan
nah, (where the heavy shipments are making both
for sale and transshipment) and the advance in
freight in Charleston. To-day there was not much
doing, both sellers and buyers awaiting the receipt of
the steamers letters ere they operated to any very
heavy extent. The sales of the week reach 4,365
bales at the following rates: 26 at ss; 17 at 5g ;
128 at 5J ; 76 at sf; 262 at 5} ; 99 at 5 13-16 ; 75
at ; 530 at 6 ; 146 at 6 1-16 ; 536 at 6* ; 261 at
6 3-16; 549 at 6* ; 225 at 6 5-16; 391 at 6f; 99 at
6 7-16 ; 333 at 6* ; 227 at 6f ; 18 at 6 11-16 ; 358
at 6* ; 12 at 6|; and 99 bales at 7 cents. The quo
tations of the sales to-day are as follows :
Inferior to ordinary 5£ a 5|
Good ordinary to middling 6 a 6$
Good Mid. to Middling fair 6J a 6f
Pair to fully fair 6| a 6{
Good fair to choice a 7
For the latter description there is a good demand and
when strictly up to the mark they bring 7 cts. The
receipts by the Railroad still continue heavy, but a
great proportion of it is Cotton from Macon intended
for Charleston and transhipment to New York.
The receipts at all the ports now amount to 1,686.-
059 bales against 1,279,730 at same time last year,
showing an excess of receipts 0f406,229 bales. The re
ceipts at the Atlantic ports now reach 527,024 against
256,101 bales at same period last year, showing an
excess of 270,923 bales. The excess at Savannah is
now 118,980, and to Charleston 147,284 bales. The
deficiency in New Orleans is still trifling, being only
12,041 bales, this year. The Texas report also shows
a small decrease. The stocks at all the principal ports
show but little variation from last year, being 765,-
309 bales against 731,810 bales at same time last year.
The exports to Great Britain also continue heavy,
being now 313,518 bales more than at same period
last year. The decrease to Prance still continues
about the same figures.
The last accounts from Liverpool, received by Te
legraph, are considered decidedly favorable—large
sales, good trade and advancing prices. Speculators
have turned their attention to the article, frem the
abundance of money, and every thing look* favora
ble for the maintenance of present prices, and in the
opinion of some of advanced ones. The only fear
that dealers feel in that country is from an over-sup
ply, but if trade continues in the healthy state that it
dees at present we think very little soar may be felt if
the receipts of the crop reach the figures of the most
extravagant calculation.
