OUR NEXT VOLUME! 1
FOR 1850 t
PROSPECTUS OF
THE EIGHTH VOLUME
OF
; f £s/ MONTHLY JOURNAL, \v^\
Devoted \0 '
SOUTHERN AGRICULTURE.
EDITED BY DANIEL LEE, M.D.
Illustrated with numerous elegant and costly
Engravings.
TERMS:—ONE DOLLAR PER ANNUM,
IN ADVANCE.
On the first of January, 1850, the first number of
the Eighth Volume of the SOUTHERN CULTI
VATOR will be issued. In sending forth another
Prospectus, it is deemed unnecessary to make any
new promises. If seven years of continued, unflag
ging, earnest effort to improve and advance the Agri
culture of the South have not sufficiently established
the character of the work, nothing that can be said on
this occasion will contribute to such a result. The
Publisher desires that his future efforts in that great
and noble cause shall be judged by bis past. It is
his purpose to make the Cultivator equal, in every
respect, to what it is now ; what the planters of the
South want —a medium for the communication of the
thoughts and opinions of practical men, that they may
successfully teach each other whatever is important to
their interests and their profession.
Planters of the South !—the future destiny of the
Southern Cultivator is committed to your keeping
and care. You, and you alone, can sustain it, and
as it is exclusively devoted to your interests, your aid
is confidently invoked. If you deem it worthy a
generous and liberal support, let it not suffer for the
want of that support. If it is of value, it should be
in the bands of every man who boasts the proud vo
cation of tilling the soil; and the Publisher looks to
his friends and the friends of the work to aid him in
extending its circulation.
It will be published monthly, as heretofore, on fine
paper, in quarlo'form, each number containing SIX
TEEN PAGES of closely printed matter, 9 by 12
inches square, forming a volume in the course of the
year of 192 pages —witb a complete Index.
TERMS:
One copy, 1 year $1 00
Six copies, 1 year 5 00
Twenty-five copies 1 year 20 00
One Hundred copies 1 year 75 00
cash must invariably accompany the order.

searching preparation from the root that has ever
been employed in medical practice.
The ollowing certificate from Col. Samuel G.
Taylor, a gentleman of high standing and extensive
acquaintance through the Southern States, commends
itself to the attention of all.
New York, January 7, 1848. — Messrs. A. B, &
D. Sands: Gentlemen —Having used, and witnessed
the effects of your excellent preparation of Sarsapa
rilla on different persons in various parts of the South
ern country, viz ; Virginia, Louisiana, Texas and
Mexico, I feel much pleasure in stating the high
opinion entertained of its great medicinal value. In
my own case it acted almost like a charm, removing
speedily the enervated state of the system, and exci
ting in the mcA agreeable manner, a tonic and in
vigorating influence.
Your Sarsaparilla is highly approved and exten
sively used by the United States army in Mexico, and
my cousin, Gen. Zachary Taylor, has for the past
five years been in the habit of using it, and recom
mends the same; he and myself adopted the article
at the same ti me, and it is now considered an almost
indispensible requisite in the Army. In conclusion
I would say, that the better it is known the more
highly it will be prized, and I trust that its health
restoring virtues will make it generally known,
throughout the length and breadth of our widely ex
tended country. Yours very respectfully,
S. G. TAYLOR, U. S. Consul to N. Grenada.
The following is only another link in the great
chain of testimony to its merits. Let the afflicted
read and be convinced. What it has done it will do
again.
Elizabethtown, N. J., May 15, 1646. —A. B. &
D. Sands: Gentlemen—Having been cured of a se
vere scrofulous disease by the use of your celebrated,
and to me invaluable Sarsaparilla, I feel it to be an in
cumbent duty which I owe to my suffering fellow
beings to testify to the means which restored me to
health, under the blessings of Providence, after all
other remedies failed. The first bottle of your Sar
saparilla relieved me of all the distressing symptoms,
and did more good than all the medicine I had taken
for years before. A continuation of your Sarsaparil
la, in combination with your Salt Rheum Remedy
applied externally, effectually removed all the disease,
restored me to health, and I am now able to attend to
my business.
I would say to all, and particularly to my German
countrymen, if you are suffering under scrofula or
any disease similar to what I have been, use the
medicine that has been tried, proved and acknowledg
ed to be all that is required to bring health to the de
bilitated frame. Yours, sincerely,
FREDERICK DICKEL, Cabinet Maker.
Sands’ Sarsaparilla. —lt has ever been a prime
article of our medicinal creed, to recommend no ad
vertised medicines, for we are opposed to them con
scientiously and professionally, but we feel bound to
deviate from this rule, and recommend to the suffer
ing the article at the head of this notice. The grea
medicinal virtues of Sarsaparilla, are well known
and appreciated by physicians, but the uncertainty ol
the strength of the different preparations of the root,
some being almost inert, has caused the medicine it
self to fall into disrepute. The Messrs. Sands, it
would seem, have succeeded in obtaining a powerful
and uniform preparation of it. We have seen an
abundance of testimonials to its efficacy from the high
est authority, and we recommend it with pleasure. —

The following interesting case is presented, and the
reader invited to its careful perusal. Comment on
such evidence is unnecessary.
New York, April 26, 1847. —Messrs. Sands; Gen
tlemen—Having long been afflicted with general de
bility, weakness, loss of appetite, &c., receiving no
benefit from the various remedies prescribed, I con
cluded about three months since to make use of your
Sarsaparilla. I now have the pleasure of informing
you that its effects have been attended with the hap
piest results in restoring my health, and I am induced
to add my testimony to the many others you already
possess, and to those desiring further information, I
will personally give the particulars of my case, and
the effects of this invaluable medicine, by calling at
285 Bowery, New York. Yours respectfully,
JANET McINTOSH.

Ulcer Permanently Cured. — New York, April
22, 1845.—Messrs. A. B. & D. Sands; Gentlemen
—Feeling it a duty due to you and the community at
large, I send you this certificate of the all-healing
virtues of your Sarsaparilla, that others who are now
suffering may have their confidence established and
use your medicine without delay. I was troub ed
with a severe ulcer on my ankle, which extended
half way up to my knee, discharging very offensive
matter, itching, burning, and depriving me often of
my rest at night, and very painful to bear.
I was recommended to use your Sarsapari la by
Mr. James McConnell, who had been cured by it,
and alter using five bottles I was completely cured.
I have delayed sending you this certificate for one
year since the cure was effected, in order to ascertain
with certainty whether it was a permanent cure, and
it now gives me the greatest pleasure to add that I
have neither seen nor fell the slightest reappearance
of it, and that lam entirely well. Yours very truly,

The greatest Medicine in the known World
Os all the cures that have ever been recorded, we

of the curability of Consumption, even when life had
qeen despaired of.
Dr. Swayne—Dear Sir; For the good of the pub
c, I feel myself in duty bound to testify to the great
ure which your Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry
performed on me. For my part, I feel as if every
body ought to know it, I was afflicted with a violent
cough, spitting of blood, night sweats, hoarsenessand
sound of the voice indicating an alarming state of dis
ease ; my appetite was gone, and my strength had so
far failed me, that my friends and physician were per
suaded I could not survive many days. My sister,
who was my anxious care-taker, made inquiry where
she would be likely to procure most certain relief. —
She was told that it Dr. Swayne’s Compound Syrup
of Wild Cherry failed in the cure, my life was then
hopeless. Y our medicine was immediately procured,
and the first botde gave relief, and by the time I had
commenced the sixth bottle n>y cough loft me, and
ray strength much improved. In short, it has made
a perfect cure of me ; and I am at present as hearty
a man as I wish, and have good reason to believe that
the use of your medicine has saved me from a pre
mature grave. I shall be pleased to give any infor
mation respecting my case.

BEWARE OP IMPOSITION I
There is but one genuine preparation of H ild
Cherry , that is DR. Slf-d YNK'S— all others, by
a little inquiry in the quarters where they originate,
will be found to be fictitious and counterfeit. The
great and increasing demand for the original article,
has induced a host of unprincipled men to pul forth
spurious mixtures, and to give currency to their nos
trums, attach the name of Wild Cherry, thinking to
borrow a name from that already established. As
you value your lives, beware ol them. Some are
called “ Balsams, Cherry Pectoral, Wild Cherr/
and Tar, Wine of Wild Cheiry, Wild Cherry Pills,
Sarsaparilla and Wild Cherry Bitters, ” and a host
of others who, in some way, attach the name of Wild
Cherry. No one ever thought of using this name for
an article of their own belonging to one of the great
est remedies ever discovered for the human family.
That remedy is Dr. Swayne's Compound Syrup
of Wild Cherry , the original and only genuine. Re
member, it is put up in square bottles, covered with
a beautiful wrapper, (steel engraving) with the por
trait of Dr. Swayne thereon, also his signature.
GreatL Blessing to Mothers and Children.
DR. SWAYNE’S VERMIFUGE.—There is no
remedy for the instruction and expulsion of worms
equal to this. One great objection to all other leme
dies is that they are so nauseous that children cannot
be made to take sufficient to do them much if any
benefit. This remedy is remarkably pleasant to the
taste. Should there be no worms, the system will be
greatly improved by its use. It is also a great rem
edy for dyspepsia, sour stomach, &c. Remember, it
is now put up in square bottles, with the portrait of
Dr. Swayne on each side, without which none is
genuine.
CLEANSE AND PURIFY.
Dr. Swayne’s Sarsaparilla and Extract Tar Pills
are a mild and gentle purgative, unsurpassed by any
medicine for removing the bile, cleansing the stomach,
and effectually purifying the blood.
The above valuable Medicines are prepared only
by DR. SWAYNE, N. W. corner of Eighth and
