SAVANNAH AND AUGUSTA.
THE STEAMBOAT COMPANY OF GEORGIA,
IN ADDITION to Three Steam-
ers formerly composing their line,
have recently built the very light
draught Iron steamer, DAVID L. ADAMS, of great
capacity and power, (making her trips in 24 to 30
hours,) thus securing great dispatch and unequalled
facilities for the transportation of Goods, at very low
rates, to the interior of Georgia, South Carolina, Ten
nessee, and Alabama, in connection with the Geor
gia, Western and Atlantic, and Tennessee Railroads.
All Goods will be forwarded without commissions*
also, Produce from the Georgia Railroad; expense*
on which will be paid and collected at Savannah,
from consignees, or from vessels by which shipped,
when required.
The D. L. Adams will run in connection with the
Steamships Florida and Alabama, thus ensuring the
traa'tnifesion of Goods from New York to Augusta,
in sto 7 days. Bills of Lading should accompany
goods by Steamships.
Particular attention should be observed in direct
ing Hills of Lading; many now direct ‘‘Steamboat
Agent,” “Steamboat Company,” &c., and as there
arc several Companies, this creates detention , and
much confusion ; shippers by this Company should
therefore direct Merchandize from the INTERIOR to
JOHN B. GUIEU, Agent, Augusta, and from SEA

Lake Superior.— Sixty years ago there
were but two vessels of any kind on this In*
land Sea, and not more than one or two white
families between the Ssult Ste Marie and La y
Pointe ; a distance of 400 miles. Now there
are three large propellers, six or eight sail
vessels, four light-houses, and several thousand
inhabitants scattered along the cost. The cli
mafe is healthful and invigorating ; the water
pure and transparent; the fish abundant and
most delicious; the soil produces the finest
potatoes and other vegetables in the world,
and copper, iron, and other valuable minerals
are found in inexhaustible quantities.
A ship canal of less than one mile in length,
at a cost or not over half a million of dollars,
would connect this rich and extensive mineral
Lake region with all the commercial ports of
the world.
Cotton in Nicaragua. —A person in Nicara
gua writes that coMon may be cultivated there
to any extent, though the want of energy in
the inhabitants baa reduced the production to
a very small quantity. In a single year as
much as fifty thousand bales, of three hun
dred pounds each, of clean and excellent qual
ity, have been exported.
California Gold. —The amount of California
gold received at the Philadelphia Mint has
averaged for the last eleven months two and &
half millions of dollars per month, as wili
be seen by the following statement from the
Treasurer:
Gold dust deposited in November $4,400,000
Coinage during the same period 4,104,000
Aggregate receipts of California gold dust
from Jan. Ist to Nor. 30, inclusive •• • 27,350 000
From other sources 1,200,000
Total receipts—eleven months $53,550,000
The Internal Comekrcb of the Coun
try.—The aggregate value of the Lake trade,
as appears by returns made at the Bureau of
Topographical Engineers, amounts to the
enormous sum of $186,485 269, or more by
S4O 000,000 than the whole foreign export
trade of the country ! The aggregate tonnage
is 203 041 tons, of which 35 904 is foreign.
The nett value of the commerce of the Wes *
tern rivers is $256,233,810. the value of vessels
$18,661,500. Tie grogs value of the internal
commerce of the United States, which is al
most double that of the nett value, is $795,
654,774
Alleged Outrage on the American Flag.
—Capt. John W. Disney, late master of brig
Volusia, of Baltimore, who came passenger in
the brig Boston, at Holmes’ Hole, from Bahia,
complains strongly of an outrage committed
upon him and his owners, by the commander
of an English steamer on the African Coast, in
the seizure and cond mnaiion of his vessel,
when on a lawful voyage. He writes full and
clear particulars of his voyage, which are not ■
of special interest to the general reader, but
will undoubtedly be attended to by the proper
authorities. —Boston Daily Adv.
At a late meeting of the Directors o r the
Selma and Tennessee River Railroad, the road
was located through Jacksonville, Benton
County, on condition that that County and
Randolph, would make an additional subscrip'
tion of SIOO,OOO. We are pleased to learn
from the Jacksonville Republican, that $65,-
000 of this amount has already been subscrib
ed, and that the remainder will be certainly
raised in a short time. The completion of this
raportant Road to th 3 Tennessee River, is now
placed beyond a doubt.
It is the purpose of the contractors, we uo.
derstand, to have the cars running over the first
27 miles asearly as the first of July. —Atlanta
Intelligencer.
Steam Ship Louisiana. — A new steam
ship of this name, to run between New York
and New Orleans, and advertised to touch at
this port, got under way at the former city, at
about the same time the Southerner left but
was soon lost sight of. She was expected here
on Wednesday morning, but the New York
Herald of Monday, stales that she returned to _
port on account of some disarrangement in
her machinery. —Ch C our.
