European Intelligence.
Wi aubjoin some additional items of intelligence
from Europe to 11th mutant, brought br ateaifler
Atlantic at New York.
The intelligence by the Atlantic dissipates the ru
mor that the Emperor of Russia had issued an ukase
igainst tho exportation of breadstuff* from his do
minions. The following from tho London Times
of the Ttli instant is explicit on tho subject:
Tin* mercantile advices from most parte of the
’continent continues wholly uninteresting, both as
regards financial and general transactions. From
St. Petersburg the dates are to the lyth of Janua
ry. Business was remarkably quiet, but there had
been considerable purchases of wheat and rye on
Swedish account, at advancing prices. The state
ment which has been pertinaciously repeated in the
continental papers, that the exportation of grain
hud been prohibited, appears still io have been
wholly without foundation. The satisfactory na
ture of the last hnrrest in Russia rendered such a
step altogether improbable. Tho adrices from
Odessa are to the 26th, and again repo* large con
tracts for wheat, principally for the Mediterranean
1 here had been a further movement in quotations
which, coupled with an alteration which had aim.
taken place in the rate of exchange, was equal to
anadvance of about 6s. per quarter.
Disco of Gold i/i iSh/e. —The people of Skyo
re in the greatest state of excitement at present, a
gold mins having been discovered on tho banks’of
die river Stenchol, in Watsrnish. A travelling
tinker, of tho name of Stewart, him converted some
of the gold into rings. I have not seen any of it
myself, but from the dsseription given bv those d
who have seen the metal, I have no doubt that it is
?otd. This statement is quits correct, and yon mar
insert it. Samples of the metal have been sent to
Edinburgh.—Correspondent of the Invented Cm- j
t'isr.
Naplka, Jan. 29. —The modification of the min- K
istry has led to the release of several political pris
oners. M. Tofaui, a lawyer, who has been in pri
son three years without trial, or without Ino wing
hia offence, is released, but ordered to leave the
country. M. Romano is also liberated on tUo same
terms. The nsw prefect of police has liberated
more than fifty persons imprisoned without any de
clared reason, home of the prisoners of the islands,
who were sent by royal authority to the war of
Charles Albert, have also been set at liberty.
Thb admission contained in tho following pum
graph from the London Thus*, was mi
grating to the pride and feelings of that anti-
American jourdal aa were its acknowledgements
of our triumphs at the World’s Fair in Ihe arts
of peace. That tho habits of the American peo
ple, and tlisir familiarity with fire-arms, roudar
them superior to any other nation in war, no im
partial mind can doubt:
“Early in the American war it was plainly dis
cerned by the most sagacious of British statesmen
that our armies, superior as they showed them
selves in the field, must be ultimately unavailing
against the resources of a country where everv
citizen could wield a lansket with good will against
an invader. The result proved the truth of the
prediction ; and although we do not, as we have
said, consider the tendencies of these institutions
aa highly pacific, there is no doubt that thev fur
nish aa impregnable bulwark against hostile at
tack.”
