’ DAILY CHRONICLE & SENTINEL
MISCELLANY.
Effkctof Monotonous Employments on Health.
In Dr. Drapers address to the New Medical Col
lege on the death of Dr. I’attison, we find the
following truthful remarks :
“No man for any length of time can pursue
one vocation or one train of thought without men
tal injury—nay, 1 will go farther, without insanity.
The constitution of the Drain is such that it must
have its time of repose. Periodicity is stamped
upon it. Nor is it enough that it is awake and in
action by day, and in tffo silence of the night oh- m
tains rest and repose. That same periodicity* which V
belongs to it as a whole, belongs, too, to all its co i- 1
stituent parts. One portion of it cannot be called >
into incessant activity without a permanent inju
ry ensuing. Its ditferent regions devoted to dif
ferent functions, must have their separate time of
rest. The excitement of one part mu>t he coinci
dent with a pause in the action of another. 1 do
not think it possible for mental equilibrium to he
maintained with one idea or one monotonous
mod© of life. There is a necessity for men of
great intellectual endowments, whose minds are
often strained to the utmost, to fall hack on other
pursuits, and thus it will always bo that one seeks
refuge in the pleasure* of quiet country life, anoth
er in the chase, another in foreign travel, another
in social amusements. Nay, with all men, even
those whose lot has been cast in a more lowly con
dition, whose hard destiny it is to spend their
whole lives in pursuit of their daily bread, \rth
one train of thought, and one unvarying course
of events, what would become of them, if it were
not for such a principle as this? Men often say
that the pleasures of religion, and ot a Christian
faith, are wholly prospective, and but to be real
ized only in another world. In this they make ft
mistake ; for those consolations commence even
here and temper the bitterness of fate. The virtu
ous Irborer though he may be ground down with
the oppressions of his social condition, is not
without his relief; at the anvil, the loom, or even
the bottom of the mine, he is leading a double
existence—the miseries of the body find a contrast
in the calm of the soul—the warfare without is
compensated by the peace within—the dark night
of life here serves only to brighten the glories o'
the prospect beyond/ Hope is the daughter of
despair. And thus a kind Providence so overrules v "
events, that it matters not in what station we may
be—wealthy or poor, intellectual or lowly —a re
fuge is always at hand, and the mind worn out
with one thing turns to another, an d ts physical
excitement is followed by physical repose.” J
Curk for Headaches.—A work lias been pub
lished in Paris, by an eminent physician, in which *1
is described a new remedy tor the headache. Ho !
uses a mixture of ice and salt, in proportion of one
to half as a cold mixture, and this he applies by
means of a little purse of silk gauze, with a rim of
guttu percha, to limited spots on the forehead or
other parts of the scalp, where rheumatic head
ache is felt it gives instantaneous relief. The skin
is subjected to;the process from half a minute to one
and a half minutes, and it is rendered hard and
white. It is said to be good in erysipelas and dis
eases of the skin.
