Thk Ice Betook ovek thk Susqukii.vxna. —The
ice bridge and railroad recently removed from the
Susquehanna, and which served fur fifty days or
more to ali'ord a sate and easy transit over the
ver fur the cars and freight trains between lialti-
B ore and Philadelphia, possessed not only great
novelty as a contrivance for an unlooked-for exi
gency, but constituted at the same time a work re
markable for engineering skill and energy. A live
ly sketch of the scene, engraved on a pretty largo
scale, is published in the Boston Museum of Feb
ruary 21.
The sketch, however, presents the view as it was
when travellers with then baggage made the passage
across over the rough masses of ice—immense frag
ments and huge blocks, wedged in all shapes toge
ther and rendered passable by boards. So soon as the
increasing cold had given these masses sufficient
consistency and coherence, the superintendent of
tire road, 1 It. Trimble, Esq., with all the prompti
tude and decision of his military education and en
gineering skill, collected a force with which in
forty-eight hours the inequalities of these hills of
ice were removed by levelling heights and filling
up hollows, and a track laid for the ears from one
bank of the river to the other. The surface of the
river being lower than the level of the road, much
labor, and ingenuity were called in requisition u> *
make so perfect a connection across in so shorta
tune. if
The road thus laid served for fifty-two days to
give an uninterrupted transit for some forty to
sixty cars daily—two horses being attached to each
car on the ice road, while locomotives were used
for drawing them up the inclined planes on each
side; No accident occurred to render this mode of
crossing the river difficult or dangerous. The char
ter, however, for the road having expired by na
ture's removal of the bridge she had constructed
without leave of the Legislature, a hint is given to
that he>dy to do its part in the premises, and antaorize
the construction 0/ a bridge which may be perma

The United States Recruits who left New
York on the 14th of January for California, and
arrived at Panama February *2d, left that port on
the Bth for their places of destination. Several of
the men deserted on the Isthmus, one was drown
ed in Chagres river, and two were killed by the na
tives. The authorities at Panama displayed much
anxiety on hearing of the approach of the Ameri
can troops, owing to the disturbance which was
said to have taken place between them and the au
thorities of Jamaica. The whole command, how
ever, was marched through the city without disor
der, and was immediately embarked for Toboga,
whence the two detachments, under the command
of Major Patten and Oapt. Day, were transferred
to the steamer California, which departed for San
Diego and Benicia on the Bth of February.
Explosion of a Cannon.—The Louisville Courier
learns from some passengers on the steamboat
Fawn that while the boat was leaving Leaven
worth, Ind., a cannon, with which the citizens were
firing a salute, exploded and wounded several per
sons, blowing the negro gunner into the air. A
fragment of the cannon, weighing some thirty or
forty pound!} fell on the hurricane deck of the
Fawn, and went completely through it and- the
cabin floor, smashing the supper table in its coarse,
and lodging on the lower deck.— Picayune. • .
The Mexican Boundary Commission.—Advices
dated Mazatlan, Janu iry 16th, have been received
at Washington, from the Boundary Commission.
Mr. J. K. Bartlett, the Commissioner on the part
of the United (states was then there awaiting coik j
veyauce to San Francisco. He had proceeded, late
in November or early in Dece 1 her, to Santa Cruz, Wi
a town of Sonora, accompanied by the Mexican
Commissioner, Gen. Pedro Garcia Conde, with the i
common purpose of procuring provisions for their
respective parties. At this place Gen. Conde was
taken sick, but there being no physician there, he
•was removed to Arispe, the old capital of the State
of Sonora. The change was, however, of no avail,
for he died 011 the 19th of December, aged 47

A Southern Family Journal. a
THE “HOME GAZETTE” is published weekly in Augusta,
Georgia, by Robert A. Whyte, Editor and Proprietor,
at the low rate of $2 per annum, in advance. It is a Jour
nal of large size, printed on beautiful paper with clear type,
and presents as fine an appearance as any of the boasted
Northern Weeklies.
The “ Home Gazette” is devotee to Literature, Art,
Science, Education, General Intelligence and Southern In
terests, and is neutral in politics and religion. To those,
who desire a paper for the Fireside and the Home Circle, the
“ Gazette ” is offered with every assurance on the part of
the Editor, of a determination to allbrd satisfaction to his
patrons. He earnestly appeals to the people of Geor
gia and the South to support this Southern enterprise—con
fident in the belief that they w ill afford it their prompt and
generous assistance.
