INTERESTING TO COTTON PLANTERS.
Q F. PARKIIURfcT’S Patent Cotton Seed CLEAN
ING MACHINE, constructed without Saws or Ribs.
The Inventor of this Machine now has the pleasure of an
swering the numerous inquiries from Cotton Planters, res
pecting the performances and results of this Gin. It has
been fully tested by cleaning the entire crop of a large
planter near Columbia, S. C., (a certificate from whom is
appended,) enhancing the value of the Cotton one and a
half to Iwo cents per lb. over that cleaned by any Saw Gin.
This ad anted price more than pays for a Machine in one
year’s average crop, the cost of it being only $250. It turns
cut equally as much or more, than any Saw Gin ; is more
simple and durable, perfectly safe to the ginncr, inasmuch
as he cannot cut himself; and the great danger of fire, by
friction, in other Machines is entirely obviated.
Arrangements are completed, to build these Machines
in Augusta, for the State of Georgia ; and Cotton Planters
desiring them, are respectfully requested to send their or
ders to the subscriber. On* of the Gins may be seen in
operation at my Steam Mill. W. H. GOODRICH.
Augusta, April, 1851. ap!9
Copy of a certificate from Col. Wade Hampton, dated at
Miixwood, Nov. 4,1850.
Mr. Purkhurst has been, for some weeks, at my plantation
adapting his Cotton Gin, originally intended for Long Cot
ton, to snort staple. The experiment has been entirely suc
cessful. He has one Gin in operation, which will prepare
four ba' esof three hundred and fifty pounds each, per day,
and the quality of the cotton is far better thanlha-ee
erer seen. By this process of cleaning cotton, the staple
is uninjured, while all the motes and false seeds are almost
entirely separated from the lint. I deem this discovery of
vast importance to the country, and 1 earnestly hope that
Mr. Pa khurst may be rewarded for it.

MISCELLANY.
Female Names.
Alary, the sweetest of female names, may not in
appropriately stand at the head of our list. It is
from the Hebrew, and signifies exalted. Its French
form is Marie. It is, we hardly need say, a famous
name in both sacred and profane history-. In all
ages from the time of Mary, the mother of Jesus, to ||
that of Mary, the mother of Washington, the name
has literally, been exalted. It has been linked
with titles and power—with crowns and corronets,
and adorned by goodness and beauty. Mary has,
over been a favorite name with poets. Byron, a ,m
he assured us, felt an absolute passion for it. It is
inwoven with some of his sweetest verses. The
j>eas:mt poet, Burns, seems to have been as much
attached to it as the author of Childe Harold. It is
still the theme of bards and hurdlings unnumbered,
We might till a column or two here with songs,
sonnets and ballads, in the melody of whose verse
the most musical syllables are tuose which form
the charming name of Mary. But where so much
presents itself, we can quote nothing. We need
quote nothing, >or
‘The very music of the name has gone
Into our being,’
Let the motto, or the toast if yon will, be the single
line of Bryan, Waller, Proctor:
‘Here’s a health to thee, Mary.’
Sarah is almost as common a name as Mary, but % v
it lacks the pirestige which its historical and poeti- i
cal association throw round the Litter. It is also
from the Hebrew- and signifies a princess. In
poetry it takes the form of Sally or Sallie, and is Jt
found in many a love song or ballad.—Sally is ’W
sometimes contracted to Sal, which is neither poe
tical or euphonious.
Susan, another name of the Hebrew origin, sig- Wf
nifles a lily. In poetry it is usually seen in its con- l:J|
tracted form of Sue. It is a pretty name, and is L.
immortalized in Gray's well known ballad. The
signification of the name is very happily* introduc
ed in the closing line.
Mabel is probablv derived from mabeUa, signify- i
ing my fair, though some suppose that it is con
tracted from amhili *, lovely or amiable. It is a
good name in either case, and worthy of being
perpetuated. Mary- Ilowitt has_a ballad commen
cing,
‘Arise, my maiden Mabel,’
which is the only poem w*e now recollect in which
the name occurs.
Ursula, a name associated in our minds with
homliness of face and goodness of heart concealed
under the veil of a nun, is from the Latin, and
signifies nothing more amiable than a female bear !
Who, know-ing this, will give the name to a child?
Blanche, one of the sweetest names ever borno
by woman, is from the French, an I signifies whito
or fair.
Lucy, in its French from Lucie , signifies lucid,
and comes from the Latin,
‘Lucy is a golden girl,’
says Byron, Proctor, and many will echo the line.
Lucy is a favorite name with almost every one.
Wordswortli has made it one of the.
‘Names wedded unto songs.’
And lovely- indeed is the maiden bearing that
sweet name, whom nature proposes to mould at
will, to her own taste. J
Beatrice, is another name derive! from the La
tin. It signifies one who blesses or n/Ucts happy. No
name can be more appropriate foi a lovely, affec
tionate and amiable woman. Be drive has been
honored above all other* by the poets. Dante,
Shakespeare, and Shelly, have, i:i turn, thrown
around it the chain of their numbers and mixed it
with thoughts both lovely and tragic.
Caroline is the feminine form of Charles, or
rather of its Latin equivalent Carolus. —It comes
from the German, and has the signification of brave
souled or valiant. The name has been borne by
women who have proved themselves worthy of the
name. It is not in the manly breast alone, that
valor is found or needed. They are those who
have learned.
‘how sublime a thing it is
To suffer and be strong,’
have displayed a courage which shames that have
of the warrior, on the balle-field.—Caroline is some
times abreviated to Carrie, Callie and Cal.
