DAILY fIIIIOMI'LE AJEMML Interesting Experiments with Chlokoeorm. — Dr. Jackson, of Boston, on Friday made some in teresting experiments with chloroform, which tho Boston Mail describes as follows : “ Dr. Burnett had procured for Dr. Jackson a large rat, which placed by Dr. Jackson under a large glass receiver in the wire rat-trap in which it was caught, and a small piece of cloth, about the size of a man’s hand, was moistened with chloro form and placed on tire top of the rat-trap, and the receiver placed on a maabie slab. The rat, in five minutes afterwards, fell down in a state of insen sibility, the only sign of life exhibited was its gasp ing for breath once or twice. After the lapse of eight minutes the rat was re moved from the receiver and placed in fresh air, and was soon revived with the exception of its hind legs, which remained in a paralytic state for halt an hour, dragging its hind parts along by means of its fore paws; this phenomena was also exhibited some months ago at South Boston, where Dr. Jackson etherized the Puma, or South Ameri can Lion, and cut off its claws close to the quick with perfect impunity, cutting off two of the claws of the hind feet of the lion after it had recovered the use of its fore paws. The Dr. also stated that he had observed the same phenomena at the Grat io del Cauno, near Naples, where dogs were sub jected to the carbonic acid gas which is emitted there; the dogs were compelled to drag their hind er extremities by means of their fore paws, till they had recovered from the eifects of the gas. The rat, after the first experiment, was allowed the use of fresh air one hour to recover from the effect of chloroform ; and being found quite lively and animated, at about 5, P. M., the final experi ment of subjecting it to the poisonous compound was made. The rat was placed under a receiver, and a cloth moisted with the amyl compound, found by Dr. Jaeksoaiu pure Fusel oil (of wliis- . key) by a process hitherto unknown, was now placed on the top of the rat trap, in the same man- *, uer as when the chloroform was used. Five minutes more elapsed and the rut till down in the trap ap parently dead; it was taken out and revived par tially in the fresh air. It was again placed under the glass receiver, and exhibited a short quick breathing and a palpitation of the heart, and twitch ing ot the extremeties ; the breathings were now up - parently slower and more difficult, till life became extinct without further struggles. In these experiments a very large glass receiver, capable of holding several gallons of atmospheric air, was used. The amyl compound, or the sup posed Ter Chloride of Amyl , discovered by Dr. Jackson, is not very volatile in its nature, therefore death did not ensue in so short a period of time, as would have been the case with a more volatile sub stance, like chloroform, to convey it to the respira tory organs. The rat, it will bo observed, is an animal that will exist in sewers filled with mephet ie vapors, dangerous to human life. P>y experi ments made in Dr. Jackson’s laboratory by. his stu dents of 18-18, the rat was found to be a very good subjcctjforametbeticexperiments. A common Tu rtle, which is more tenacious of life than a rat, wa* placed under the receiver, and was killed in a much shorter period of time. Those who were present suffered severely from the effects of the poison. Fan ale Ppize Fighters.—A correspondent of the London Times gives the following account of a recent prize-fight in England between tv,-o women! “About a month ago 1 was at breakfast with my family at Kensal Green, when I perceived a number of persons passing through the field adjoining my house. I endeavored to aseei tain the cause. With much difficulty I did so. The stream of men and women had come from Paddington to a prize fight between two —no, not men—women ! One of my family being incredulous, contrived to look across the fields, and there saw the combatants stripped to the waist, and lighting. Men took them there, men backed them, men were the bottle holders and time Keepers. They fought for about half an hour, some say for 55., some say for a sov ereign, mid some say they will do it again. I saw the winter led bacK in triumph by men.
