CHARLESTON, Oct. I.— Cotton We purposely deferred
■j oil-ring any opinion at the commencement of the commer-
I ciul year in relation to the growing crop, until we should be
' adv.sed on the subject from the Cotton States, which had
: iufiered in many places from the dustructive freshets that
I prevailed during the latter part of the mouth of August,
! ari l also in the hope that a delay of a few weeks might en
able us to chronicle an increased activity in the general
i trade . f the city.
I As far as the cotton crop is concerned, we Lave a deci
dedly unfavorable account to render. In the early part of
* the a inner, it will be rccol ected, it was anticipated that
the g owing crop would excaed the unprece rented one of
the post year; but, contrary to all calculations.,an unprece
—iied rainy spell took place throughout nearly the entire
•oUon region, accompanied by destructive freshets, follow
ed by the spread of rust, the boil-worm, caterpillar, Ac., 1
which subsequently changed the views of the sanguine, re
ducing the estimate generally, to 2,?(i0,06i ® 2,0uU,000
bales. For our «wn part, we are among those who believe
that any attempt thus early in the season—at its very
threshold—to estimate its yield, is utterly futile. It is true,
that in our own State, as well a* in Georgia, Alabama, Mis
sissippi, Louisiana and parts of Texas, a general fee ling pre
vails that a less than average crop will be made to the hand.
But we must take into consideration that a more than ave- I
rage quantity of land, from all accounts, is this year devo- j
ted to the cultivation of this great staple, and that a con
tin nance of dry weather, without frost, until late in the sea- J
son, would place a different aspect on the face of affairs, !
and the sanguine .expectations still entertained by some [
might possibly be realised.
The Week'# Bmine&t. —The Cotton market during the
first two days of the week under reviutr may be said to
have been in a state of complete stagnation, ao little was done
in the article. There was some demand from the trade,
but purchasers were demanding lower rates than holders
were willing to accept, and hence the stagnation. On
Monday, however, the latter class of dealers yielded to cir
cumstances they could no longer control, which brought
the lormer into the market, who took during the day,
same 1150 bales, at a decline generally of about J*c. on thp j
prices current at the opening of the month, bringing Fair 1
quality down to 11c. The demand subsequently Cell off—-the j
transactions during the three following days having been
limited to about TOO bales, 216 of which were sold yesterday !
—and the market towards the close of the week exhibited !
rather a drooping tendency. The quotations which we i
give below, may, under the aspect of the market at the I
time we write, be considered extreme rates. The rec.ipts j
since our last comprise 3289 bales, and the sal esin the same
time foot up 1900 hales, at the following prices, viz : 5 bales
at ft ; 11 at -Vi ; 63 at ; 36 at 9 ; 19 at 9# ; 21 at 9/ 4 ;
28 at 10 ;20 at ;60 at I'lq ; 100 at 10> ;91 at 10 S B ;
531 at 10>4 ; 556 at 11 ; 190 at 11 } a ; 161 at 1114 ; and 17
bales at 11.%c. We quote Inferior ; Ordinary to Good
Ordinary ——; Middling to Good Middling lOfplOJz ;
Middling Fair 10"a , Fair and Fully Fair
Choice —.
Lomj Cotton —The market has been very quiet d ring
the week, the sales having been limited to 45 bales ; indci .1
the traniactions for some time back have been quite fight,
owing to the want of a supply. The prospect up to the
close of August, was never better for a large supply of this
staple. The p'mt generally looked healthy and promising,
although the presence of the caterpillar had given rise to
the apprehension that they might spread and become de
structive. The recent very excessive rains have, however,
proved of serious injury, causing the loss of fruit and sick
liness of the plant; and it is now' generally thought that the
crop cannot be large, but whether it will reach the quantity
grown last year, or fall short of it, must, rs course, depend
upon the character of the weather for the remainder of the
season.
Jtice —About 500 tierces hat e been sol.l, at prices igmg
ingfrom s@-tsja t? hundred. Among the transactions
was a lot of 55 tierces of the new crop, the second of the
season, which brought the former price.
Corn —The receipts since our last comprise 8000 bushels
common North Carolina, and about 1200 bag- Tennessee.
The f irmcr was sold at 62c., and the latter parcel brought
68c earh, bags included.
Clone —The stock of Elour which was nearly exhausted
at the time we closed our lari report, has been augmented
by the receipt this week of 800@9G0 bbls., Baltimore brands,
the whole of which has changed hand at D@5 5 1 per fib!.
B icon —The market has been very quiet throughout the
week, and prices have had a declining tendency. Several
invoices of Sides have been placed on the market within a
few days that have been refused at 11c.
Groceries —We have scarcely ever know n the Grocery
market exhibit the languid ; ppearance it wears at present.
We literally have nothing to report; and so long as this
state of things last, prices must be considered nominal.—
The supply of Sugars is rather large. Os Coffee, there is a
moderate supply. So far as Molasses is concerned, the j
stock may be considered light.
Doniesfic Liquors —The transactions have been confin cd !
solely to small lots New-Orleans Whiskey, which has been !
selling at 24@25c. gallon.
Aalt. —The demand for this article, which has been limi
ted, has been supplied at prices ranging from 1-35 to -t1.50
gl sack, according to quaniity.
Nd.Ua. —Some 500 kegs, assorted, brought 3c. : (3 5b., ca l).
Fcchamjes. —Checks on the North V ct prem.
Freights. —Two vessels have commenced loading for
Liverpool at 5-l6d. for Cotton in square bags. The
coastwise rates are nominal.

GROUND FOOD FOR STOCK.
r T''IHS Shakers of YVatervelict have said for thirty years
i I they have been in the habit of grinding their food for
Slock, and find they have, by cooking it, a saving of one-
Ihird.
I, too, have been trying experiments, and find four mea
sures of Pea or Corn meal will make eleven measures of
thick mush, and if made of proper consistency, would make
more than twelve.
Let the water be boiling hot, and stir in the meal, and
you will find I am right.
Horses and Mules will do better and hist longer. Our sta
ble men have found it out, and say they have had less loss
es life and less sickness than the} have ever known since
feeding on ground corn, and a great saving.
Five bushels in the car wilt crush out niue bushels.
What a saving.
The Granite Mills arc in excellent order to do these things
for you with dispatch. The Crasher is new, and only awaits
votir Corn to show the benefit to arrive to both parties.

PATENT EXCELSIOR
STRAW, HAY AND CORN-STALK CUTTER.
npj|E subscribers invite the attention of Farmers, and
X all others interested in feeding Stock, to their newly
invented CUTTER, which they confidently offer to the pub
lic as the most durable and effective Cutting Machine ever
used.
The Machine ( except the legs and hopper) U made en
tirely of Iron and Steel, thus securing the important de
sideratum of durability ; and being simple in its construc
tion, there is but little liability to get out of order.
The Knives are nineteen in number, of fine Cast Steel,
with a cutting edge of thirty-seven and a hall feet; they
work against nothing but the material to be cut, therefore,
they do not wear out the Machine or con become dull;
and when necessary they can be sharpened in five minutes
without removing them fr»m the shaft.
With these Machines the cutting of f»od for a large stock
is but the work of a few minutes, and with them can be cut
Hay, Straw, Fodder, Corn-Stalks, Pea-Vines, Turnips,
Pumpkins, and all such food as is used for Stock, and with
such rapidity as is truly astonishing.
An inspection will convince all of its great superiority,
and all interested will be pleased with this great improve
ment in Agricußural implements.
These Cutters are securely boxed, so that they will bear
transportation to any distance without injury.
B. T. TAYLOR & CO., Columbus, Ga.

dersigned, Agents for the Manufacturers.
