England.—lt has been formally announced that
the Ministry will adhere to the existing free trade
policy. The activity in the French Navy yards has
caused a corresponding activity in those in Eng
land. The negotiations between England and
France, for the modification of the Tariff, have
been nearly completed. The ladies of the Eng
lish aristocracy have adopted a memorial to the
ladies of the United States against slavery.
[These ladies, in our humble opinion, ould do
far more good to society were they to devou ’bot
attention to the misery and destitution existing
their very threshholds, instead of interfering with
a subject, concerning which they are profoundly
ignorant.]—Eds. Courier.

from Kingston, Jamaica, to the sth inst.
The question of the immigration of colored b- J
borers is still occupying the attention of the Legis
lature and of the press. The Kingston Morning
Journal says that the system has proved exceeding
ly expensive and altogether unsuccessful. It nays, j
December 4th, “ another loan is to be taken, anoth- J
other batch of immigrants is to be introduced, and ;
wc fear that, after a time, the lamentation that la- | ;
bor cannot be procured will be quite as loud as it l <
has been.”
In the Legislature, a bill was about to be intro- ,
dneed, a committee having been appointed with ,
full powers, havingthe following objects—no doubt : ,
the Dili referred to by the Journal:
Ist. To consolidate and pay oft' the public deb? j
of *his island.
2d. To compensate such holders of office as ina;.
be required to forego their present incomes, in or
der to* meet £he views of the country, for reducing
the expenditure.
Ed. To encourage and promote immigration; a- ‘
sc to provide a permanent fund for the liquidation ,
of the principal and interest of such loan or loans .

Emigration to Texas.—There appears to be a
constant stream of emigration into Texas, botu i ,
from this country and from Europe. W hile ships ?
are daily arriving at Galveston, hidianola and Ar
•nsas from Europe, filled with emigrants, and
while each steamer that leaves that port is crowd
ed with the sturdy sons of the Mississippi Valley,
destined also for Western Texas, the northern and
eastern portions of the State arc receiving constant
accessions by the way of Red River and Arkansas.
The following from the Natchitoches Chronicle, of
the 27th ult., is but one of a number of similar (
paragraphs which meet our eye in almost every
paper we open from that seection. Texas in- i
deed, destined to be, and at no long period either, ,
the Empire State of the South : i
“We observes perpetual stream of travellers «
passing through our streets on their way west.—
These all seem to be substantial, independent t
people, well provided with wagons and teams, and
with scarcely an exception accompanied with gangs
of negroes. Their destination, generally, is far in \
the interior of Texas, where oetter lands may bo '
procured and at easier rates. Success, say we, to i
this energetic class of our citizens.” 1
Death of John O’Keefe.—We are called upon (
to record another sudden death by violence jn our
midst. Last Saturday night, about 12 o'clock, £
Mr. O’Keefe, while walking up the side walk, near ,
the Washington Hall, was assaulted by an indi
vidual of the name of Boyd, and almost in
stantly killed after the infliction of tiv« or six I
wounds from a dirk knife. The offender having r
been promptly arrested and turned over to the *
judicial tribunals, we forbear to make further re- j
marks upon the character of the transaction. Mr.
O’Keefe has been a citizen of Macon lor twenty
years, pursuing creditably for most of that time,
the occupation of a schoolmaster, and was noted
for his quiet, retiring and inoffensive character. J
Bovd, we believe, is a journeyman saddler, in the
employment of W. T. Mix, <fe Co. ot this place. - r

The Georgia annual Conference of the M. E.
Church South, assembled in this place on yester- e
day morning—Bishop Capers presiding. At the
time wo go to press, we are not advised of the ac- ‘
tion of this highly respectable ecclesiastical body c
on any of the important matters which have been «
presented for consideration. In our next we shall t
bo able to give some account of their doings—the c
stations of the preachers for the ensuing year, at c
least, if nothing more. —Athene Herald.
Information Wanted.—We have been request- !l
ed to state that Jeremiah Austin Fairfield, a hatter
and renovator by trade, left his place of residence,
about four miles from this place, some five weeks 1
ago, in company with William Sunderland, in a j,
elate of mental aboration, and it is feared by his
family that he may have fallen a victim to intem
perance. Said Fairfield is about 45 years of age— 1
black hair and eyes —dark complexion—s feet 6or (
8 inches high. Any information concerning him, 5
would confer a favor on his afflicted family, resi
ding near the Georgia Factory. —Athene Herald. i

RHEUMATISM CAN BE CURED !
\\T F now have for sale that celebrated remedy, MOR-
I » TI MORE’S RHEUMATIC COMPOUND and BLOOD
: PURIFIER, which has gained such great popnlarity where
sver introduced, as the only specific known for the ef
fectual cure of this painful disease. This remedy has al
ready cured thousands of cases, comprising every seeming
torn of this complaint, from the inflammatory (acut-j)
form, attended with swellings and enlargement of the joints,
to old chronic casts of from ten to twenty and thirty
years' standing. Those who had for years resorted to the
various celebrated springe, had tried all the liniments and
external applications, and been under treatment of some
of the ablest physicians both in this country and Europe,
.and were pronounced incurable; still, after all these es
; forts had failed, this compound has cured them. Many
who have been cripples, either hobbling upon crutches or
| confined to their beds for years, certify to a complete and
\ permanent cure by the use of this remedy.
. We have not space, in a newspaper advertisement, to In
i' sert but a small portion of the accumulated evidence in its
i behalf. This evidence comes from sources which must in
spire confidence in every mind. The conductors of high
toned public Journals have published to the world its won
derful and beneficial effects upon themselves and those
around them, and in some instances speak of himdreels oi
cures. Physicians hare resorted to it, ur,a certify that,
j even in extreme casgg, whcrs consultations had been held,
■ and they had decided that there were no hopes of reno
ery, even then, (hey procured this medicine and adminis
tered it, and it effected a complete cure. Ministers of va
rious denominations have written and published what it
has done for themselves and their friends; while mer
- chants, officers, mechanics, and private citizens, have fur
! nished volumes of evidence of the highest character, such
as accompanies no other preparation in America,
j We moat respectfully ask those who are afflicted to send
j to the agent in their vicinity and get a circular, and read
! the letters and certificates of Rev. Jas. Mitchell, Rvv. N.
| G. Berrvman, Rev. J. H. Linn, Rev. J. M. Kelly, Rev. R.
• A. Colburn, and other clergymen ; while we add the names
of Hon. J. Smith, late President of the Bank of the State
of Missouri ; Geo. O. Atherton, officer in the Bank in St.
Louis ; Messrs. Jas. 11. Eddy, 3. Downing, A. Holland, C.
W. Stone, J. W. Chruty, Joseph Southack, with other
prominent merchants of St. Louis, as also vast numbers cf
other citizens.
This is home evidence, and these are living witnesses,
where this great remedy was first introduced, and where
many thousands have been cured during the last two
years. The proprietors have now opened their Great Cen
tral Office at No. 1 Barclay street, (Astor House,) In the
city of New York, where all orders for this medicine wU
be promptly attended to.
This is a vegetable spirit—an internal remedy, pre
pared and recommended for this one disease alone. This
it will cure !
Price, $5 per single bottle; or three bottles for sl6.
