THE GRANITE MILLS AT WORK AGAIN.
THESE splendid Mills, erected at very heavy cost to
their owner, need support from the South; and Citi
sens, and Southerners, I most respectfully ask you to sus
tain them, if not the Granite Mills, do not forget the South.
You hfve the Cunningham Mills, the Atlanta, Etowa, Le
banon, Denmead, and other Southern Mills. Have you
ever thought that every barrel of Flour brought from the
North deprives the South of a quantity of food for those of
moderate means, who can now buy Flour from me at $4.00
per barrel, and that yon also contribute to increase the
price of provisions for Negroes and Stock, by giving your
patronage to Foreign rather than Home Mills.

From the Baltimore America*—by Itugraph.
, Jan< 6 *—A frightful accident occurred
on the Boston and Maine railroad about noon to
day, whereby the life of the President elec*, was
e “ d “ngered, and his only son instantly
killed. M hen near the town of Andover, in Maa
sachusetss, the train was thrown off the track by
some obstruction and precipitated down an en
bankment 20 feet high, turning a somerset and
falling upon a pile of rocks at the bottom of the
enbankment. The cars at the time were filled
with passengers, among whom were Gen. Pierce
his lady and only son, an interesting boy, of ten
years. Gen. Pierce was the first to extricate him
self from the fragments of the car which war lit
erally smashed to atoms, and though sound in
limb, he complained of considerable pain in his
back. His son was instantly crushed to death.—
Mrs. I lerce received a number of severe contu
sions, none of which, however, are considered
dangerous. Many other passengers were badly
bruisied, and the down tram haajust brought in
six or eight of the wounded. The citizens of An
dover were assiduous in their attentions to the
sufferers. - *

The Senate failed to elect a President, the Dem
ocrats refusing to vote.
The papers contain a letter from Senator

Washington Jan. 6.—The steamer Water Witch,
recently repaired here, has been assigned to make
the proposed survey of the tributaries of the La
Plato, and is expected to leave under the command
ofUipt. Page, in course of next week.
The intelligence of the appalling accident to
Gen. Pierce and his family, received here early
this evening, causes universal expressions of re
gret and commisseration.
Cincinnati, Jan. s.—The Martha Washington
V^ 8 P ira ®y case, is still in course of investigation
at Columbus. The testimony, afffiaras it has been
given before the Court, is very strong against the
defendant. The death-bed statement of Filley,
the partner of Chapin at the time of the transac
tion, was admitted as evidence to-day. It gives
the particulars of the arrangement for destroying
the steamer, and, assuming the statement to be
correct, leaves no doubt of the guilt of all the par
ties under arrest. The case has created great ex
citement, and the result is looked for with univer
sal interest.
Boston, Jan. 6.W T m. Wilson, an engraver of
this city and agent of the Banks to detect counter

number of counterfeit plates, dies, coin, unsigned
bills. «c., being found upon his premises.

Most oi the leading officers in the regtilur army
have pronounced in favor of the revolution, and
there is every indication that Arista’B goversuient
will soon i>e overthrown.
Washington, Jan. 6.—Senator Hunter of Va.,
and Mr. Atherton, Seuator elect from New Hamp
shire, arrived here to day. Os course everybody
is on the qui vive, but there is nothing positive
as yet on the subject of the Cabinet.
Col. King, the Vice President elect will leav</

Norfolk there to await the mail steamer for Ha

may seem to require. X.
Washington, Jan. 7.—The inauguration of the

imposing spectacle. The President has directed
all business to be suspended in the Executive De

Extensivo preparations are making by the vari
