SPECTACLES.
IF \ OU will and must wear SPECTA
CLES, get them exactly suited to
eye, or they will do more harm than good. THE OPTO
METER is an instrument invented by Prof. Stampfer, ol
the l’olytechnical School of Vienna, for the purpose of mea
suring, with scientific exactness the degree of convexity
the eye has lost by age, and it applies accurate numbers
of classes to counteract the defect. None, then, need here*
after complain that their spectacles pain their eyes, who
call on us to be fitted with Spectacles. Come and see for
yourselves. Now, though we have taken much pains to
obtain this instrument, as well to inform ourselves with
reference to the application of Glasses to remedy the de
fects of vision, we take pleasure in informing our patrons
and the public that we have become sole ageubs ot Messrs.
Ball A Co., for the sale of their recently invented Cups ,
which render spectacles entirely useless, even to the most
Aged persons, where eyes have lost their convexity from
age. We append, in favor of this invention, the following
letter from Professor Finney, of Oberiin College. The fact
in regard to the improvement of my sight by the use of
Cups are these:
I was wearing GLASSES of IS inches focus —I have had
them changed twice; and am now writing in a bad
light with glasses of 4S inches focus, which is the lowest
magnifying power used by Messrs. Pike. lean now read
common print with ease with the lowest magnifying glass
es. 1 have used them agreeably to your directions about
four weeks. I see not why I may not expect, in a short
time, to have my sight quite restored by continuing the use
of the cups. I cannot but regard this discovery as of great
value. Yours, truly,
(Signed) C. G. Finnky.
P. S. I am in my sixtieth year, and have worn glasses
bout te n years.
Fra’y. 7, ISs3.—Prof. Finney writes—l have, for the
last six or eight months, used them (the Cups) but seldom.
The improved state of my sight rendering me forgetful and
neglectful of their steady use. I have received much bene
fit and no perceptible injury whatever from their use.
With my blinds open I read comfortably, and write easi
ly without glasses.
Other letters can be seen in the pamphlet, published by
Messrs. Ball A Co., in our possession.

17011 Fits, or Convulsions, Apoplectic Affections, Locked
Jaw, Cramp Colic, Chjlera, Pneumonia, Hydrophobia,
Bite ol Snakes, and other dangerous and poisonous Rep
tiles, Insects or Animjls; and all other diseases in which
immediate action is necessary.
This Tincture produces its effect by equalizing the cireu ■
lation of the blood, arid by relieving inflammation. Its ef
fect in relieving inflammation, either internal or external,
makes it useful in a grea t variety of diseases.
For Fever and Agie, or Chills, it is an almost infallible
remedy.
Diluted with syrupor honey, it is useful for Colds and
all affections of the Lungs, arising from Colds, such as
Cough, Croup, Astbnn, Difficulty in Breathing, Ac.
As an external remedy in fresh Cuts, Wounds, Bruises,
Burns, Scalds, Snake-lites, Sting of Bees, or Bite of Poi
sonous Insects, it prevents inflammation, greatly relieves
the soreness, and facilitates a cure.
Used as a wash in Eruptive Diseases, such as Scald-
Head, Ring-Worm, or diseases which cause on itching sen
sation upon the skin, it soon produces a healthy actioD.
When thus used the Gtorgia Sarsaparilla should lie taken
to purify the blood.
For Horses, and other animals, this article will be found
invaluable for Bruises, Cuts, Galls, Fistula, Ac. For Colic,
an i various other dangerous attacks, it will rarely fail to
cure even the worst cases.
This is the most active medicine in use, yet it may be
given without daDger of injury, ltse’dom fails, in dan
gerous cases, to cause an immediate re-action in the sys
tem. After it has caused a re-action, it may be followed
by such other medicines as the situation ol the patient may
indicate.
Those who have large plantations, or live at a distance
from a physician, will find it greatly to their interest to
keep it ready for use in cases of emergency. Prepared by

DAILY CHICLE & SEMIVEL.
My Old Comp&niowi.
BY ELIZA COOK.
My heart has yearned like other hearts,
With all the fervor youth imparts;
And all the warmth that feeling lends
Has freely cherished “troops of friends.”
A change has passed o’er them and me,
We are not as we used to be;
My heart, like many another heart,
Sees Old Companions all depart.
I mark the names of more than one,
But read them on the cold white stone ;
And steps that followed where mine led,
Now on the far off desert tread;
The world has warped some souls away,
That once were honest as the day ;
Some dead, some wandering, some untrue;
Oh! Old Companions are but few 1
But there are green trees on the hill,
And green flags sweeping o’er the rill,
And there are daisies peeping out.
And dog-rose blossoms round about.
Ye were my friends, “ long, long ago,”
The first bright friends I sought to know
And yet ye come—rove where I will,
My Old Companions—faithful still.
And there are sunbeams rich and fair,
As cheering as they ever were ;
And there are fresh winds playing nigh,
As freely as in time gone by;
The birds come singing as of yore,
The waves yet ripple to the shore;
Howe’er I feel, where’er I range,
These Old Companions never change.
I’m glad I learnt to love the things
That Fortune neither takes nor brings ;
I’m giad my spirit learned to prize
The smiling face of sunny skies ;
”l’was well I clasp’d with doating hand
The balmy wild flowers of the land;
*° r ®Hlly«> live in friendship sure,
My Old Companions, bright and pure.
Though strong may be the ties we make
The strongest mortal tie may break • ’
Though warm the lips that iove us now
They may perchance forswear the vow :
We see pale death and envious Hate, ’
Fling shadows on the dial-plate ;
Noting the hours when dark sands glide,
And Old Companions leave our side.
But be we sad, or be we gay,
With thick curls bright, or thin leeks gray,
We never find the spring bloom meet
Our presence with a smile less sweet.
Oh ! I am glad I learned to love
The tangled wood and cooing dove;
For these will be, in good or i'l,
My Old Companions, changeless still.
A Lfaf from the Fern.—“ Fanny Fern” was
ne er more suggestive than in the following, which
is as good as anything, in the same way, we ever
saw from any pen. She calls it “The Baby’s Com
plaint”—baby loquitur:
Now I suppose you think because you never see
me do anything but feed and sleep, that I have a
very nice time of it. Let mo tell you that you are
mistaken, and that I'm tormented half to death,
though I never say anything about it. How should
you like every morning to have your nose washed
up instead of down ? How should you like to have
a pin put through your dress into your skin, and
have to bear it all dav until your clothes were taken
off at night? How should you like to be held so
near the fire that your eyes were half scorched
out of your head, while the nurse was reading a
novel 1 How should you like to have a great fly
light on your nose and not know how to take tin
at him, with your little, fat, useless fingers ? Ilow
should you like to be left alone in the room to tako
a nap, and have a great pussy jump into your cra
dle and sit staring at you with her great green eyes
till you were all of a tremble ? How should you
like to reach out your hand for the pretty, bright
candle, and find out that it was away across the
room, instead of close by ? How should you like
to tire yourself out, crawling away across the car
pet, to pick up a pretty button or pin, and have it
snatched away as soon you begin to enjoy it ?
I tell yon it is enough to ruin any baby’s temper.
How should you like to have your mamma stay at
a party till you were as hungry as a little cub, ar.d
be left to the mercy of a nurse, who trotted you up
and down till every bo»e in your body ached I
How should you liko when your mammy' dressed
you up all pretty to take the nice, fresh air, to
spend the afternoon with your nurse in some
smoky kitchen, while she gossiped with one of her
cronies ? How should you like to have your, tees
tickled by ail the little children who insisted upon
“seeing baby’s feet ?” How should you like to
have a dreadful p; in under your aprou, and have
every body call you “a little crosa-thing,” when
you could’t speak to tell what was the matter with
you? How should you liko to crawl to the top of
the stairs, (just to look about a little,) and pitch
heels over head from the top to the bottom i Oh,
I can tell you it is no joke to be a baby ! such a
thinking as wo keep up ; and if we try to find
out anything we are sure to get our brains knock
ed out in the attempt. It is very trying to a sen
sible baby, who is in a hurry to know everything,
and can’t wait to grow up.
