Steamer Cleveland Burnt Us.—We aro inform
ed by a pa-sengsr who came up on the Huron last
night, irom Mumtowoc, that the steamer Cievet
laud had met with an accident at Green Bay, hav
ing burst her condenser day before yesterday/jus
as she was about starting from the pier, doing
conaiderable damage to the boat, but no one was
i/.jured, except a woman, who was slightly scalded.
The captain of the Cleveland came up on the
Huron, en his way to Chicago. We did not learn
the amount of damage to the boat.— Milwaukee

Philadelphia, October s.—An Ameru an meet
was held to night in Independence square, and was
one of the largest gatherings held there for a long
time. Delegations from the various wards march
ed to the square in proc ssions with banners and
music, exploding rockets and other fire works.
There wbb speaking from three stands. Thomas
J. Perkins presided at the principal stand, where
an address was road, and adopted by acclamation.
Speeches followed by Lewis C. Levin, William F.
Small. The proceedings ended by a splendid piece
of fire works with the motto “#«r own our native
Land."
Providence, Oot. 4.—Arrived at Princeton, Oc
tober 8, schooner Agate, Roberts, from Grand
Banks—reports that on the 20th September, fell in
with the schooner Yarmouth Packet of and from
Yarmouth, N. S., for Belfast Ireland, in a sinking
condition. Took off the captain, mate and two
men, and afterwards put the two men on board
the schooner N. H. Williams, of Provinoetown,
and brought the captain and mate to this port.
Stracube, Oct. B.—Nine fugitive slaves from
Virginia arrived here this morning en route for
Canada.
Pottsville, Pa., Oct. 4.—A most frightful ex
plosion occurred near Minersville to day in the
mines of Gideon Bast, on Wolf creek. It is re
ported that five persons have been killed aad
many others wounded. The particulars have not
yet been received.
Oct. 5, — Whilst theDern erts of the
Efc' night, several pistols shots were fired at them
when passing the corner ot Pino and Baltimore
a tett, in the extreme western part of the city, by
certain parties said to belong to the Know Noth

hea.l and died soon afterwards. ’Thomas Davis
ha* been arrested charged with the murder. This

New Yore, Oct. 6.—Cotton is easier, but not
quotably lower, and 1200 tale* were sold to’day at

Uplands. Flour has advat.cod irom 6to 12c. per

per bbl. Wheat is higher, with an active specu

at $2.10 for Southern White and $2.20 for Cana
dian, $2.12 for Western. White and $1.90 per
bn-!,el far Southern Red. Corn is jfrorth 88Wc.
per bushel. Mens Pork commands $22 25 a bbl.

to the State Convention, and passed a resolution
unanimously in favor of re nominating President

St. Lours, Oct. B.—The report that Capt. Heath
ha 1 been killod in the battle with the Indians, is
erroneous.
Haktiord, Oct. 4.—ln the one hundred and
t w itity one towns hoard from the election has re
mind by a large majority in favor of tho Ameri
can proposition to amend tho Constitution, by re
quiring all electors hereafter to be able to read the
Constitution and statutes. One hundred and
twenty throe towns gave an aggregate of 15,097 in
favor to 10,891 against. There are only one hun
dtc i and fitly three towns in the. State.
Newark, N. J., Oct. 4.— John McKinney, who
murdered Conrad Bauer in a lager beer sa
ico;; in this city, on the night of the 6th of August
w!,-* arrested in New Orleaus on Monday last, by
officer Bradshaw, who had been despatched in his
pursuit by the authorities. The Grand Jury, at
the pre-ent terra ol our. County Court, fouud a
bill of indictment against McKinney, for tho mur
der in question. Ho will bo immediately brought
to this city.
New York, Oct. 4—A meeting of Whigs op-
P* Ito fusion was held to night at Constitution
Hail, and largely attended. George Wood, Esq.,
presided. As address was agreed upon strongly
denunciatory of the abandonment of Whig prin
cij ! ju and a fusion with the sectional organixaliou
ol the Republican party. A preamble and reso
lutions to the t ame effect, and calling a Whig State
Convention to meet in this city on the 28d inst.,
were also passed.
