The rumor published last week of an attack by
Indians on a party of soldiers at Palm Grove, is
confirmed. The particulars are as follow :
Two detachments, (numbering in all about 29
men,) from Co.’s B and K sth Infantry, under
command of anon-commissioned officer were l<* : r
in eiiarge of' boats, stores, &.c., at Palin Grove
whih; the main body of t e troops that had been
opt rating in that quarter were withdrawn.
Tbe nearest point I ruin which water could be ob
tamed bemg about : of a mile, the men were com
pelled to convey it in barrels. It had been cus to
mary for four men to catry the barrel, while six
others accompanied them as guards.
On the 2Jd ulh, while approaching the well they
were cut off from the camp and tired on by a con
siderable number of Indians. Privates Siler, (’->. B.
ami Springer, Co. K, were killed ; pr vat** Ilaur,
Go- E,.severely, and Wo l, Co. B, slightly wounded.
Three of the remainder itnew away their aims
while the rest made a good retreat. The camp w;

fight. The soldiers went out, and the Indians re
tired to & hammock. The savages were led by a
negro, win was dressed in the full costume of a

Sixteen Indians were counted, audfrmn the signs,
it was supposed there were as many more. 'J hey
whooped around the camp during the night, and it
