CHRONICLE & SENTINEL
Southern jiltivatok.
Pit bashed by W. S. Jo net. at Augusta, Oa.
Terms . One Dollar a Year.
We have received the October number of the
“Southern Cul’ivator” and gladly welcome it to
our sanctum. This number opens with the usual
‘'Hints for the Month/’ and contains a rich afore of
valuable information h r everybody—the fanner
aed mechanic in particular. —Decatur (Ala.) Times.
Soother Cultivator.— We are always glad to
open this invaluable periodical,as it always teems
with the most important information fer the house
hold, the plantation, the garden, &c.. and is a work
indispensable to tho-e who would study domestic
economy, agiiculture and horticulture. Ibis, the
September number, has several interesting pa
pers— ths* oa “Colleges” is part cuiarly good.—
It is published at Augusta, Ga , monthly, by Wm.
S. Jones, at the very low rates of SI.OO per annum.
[Jacksonville (Fla ) Standard.
Southern Cultivator. —On our tirst page will
be found au article, entitled—“ Shall ire Improve
or Remove," extracted from the editorial depart
un-ut of the October number of this wuik, which
deserves an attentive perusal by ell persons who
teel an interest in the social, commercial and agri
cultural prosperity of our State. If is an ably writ
ten paper, by Rev. C. W. Howard, and we offer
no apology for the amount of space it occupies.
The subject is one which should command more se

The Use ok Alisma Plantago in Epilepsy.—
The Loudon Lancet reports the following case :
William, the eon of Sergeant T ,of the Middle
sex Rifles, a boy of eight years, has been subject to
epileptic fits from a few' months after birth. Ihey
have increased in fi equency and intensity; his mother
says thatp‘they average six in a fortnight” —frequent
eructations, generally followed by vomiting. Much
attention, medical advice and expense have been
lavished on this case without benefit. lie was or
dered to take four grains of the powder of water
plantain twice a day, and increase the dose a grain
every third day. Eighth day, a slight lit; four
teenth day, an ordinary fit—vomiting has ceased.
Forty eighth day, a lit of short duration. The in
tervals between the fits have extended to seventy
seveu days. The apparent controlling power of
the AlUma Plantago in so little tractable a disease,
warrants more extensive trial. The powder is pala
table, of a slight brown color, and, when fresh, has
somewhat the odor of cocoa.
Soldering Broken Limbs. —Mr. Mi'ue Edwards
has been making some experiments in feeding ani
mals whose limbs he had broken, w ith phosphate of
lime. Out of six rabbits and tea doge, w hose legs
he broke in the same way, hail' w’ere ted on food
mixed wi:h ground bones, and their bones united
much more rapidly than those of the unpLoephated
animals. He thinks the use in human cases would
be decidedly beneficial.

THE LIVER

PREPARED BY DR. SANFORD.
Compounded entirely from Gums,
IS one of the beat purgatives and Liver Medicines now
before the public, that acts as a Cathartic, easier,
milder, and more effectual than any other medicine
known. It is not on'y a Cathartic, but a Liver remedy,
acting first on the Liver to < jeet Its morbid matter, tkeu
on the stomach aud bowels to carry off that matter, thus
accomplishing! wo purposes effectually, without any of
the painful feelings experienced in Use operations of
most Cathartics. It strengthens the system at the same
time that it purges it; and when taken daily in Hinder
ata doses, will strengthen and build it ap with unusual
rapk’dy.
The LIVER is of the 'principal regulators of the
human body; and when it nT performs its functions well
the powers of the system r*i are fully developed. The
stomach Is almost entirely dependen ton the healthy
action of the Liver for the proper performance of it a
functions when the stoni r, ach is at fault, the bowels
are at fault, and the whole £1 system suffers in couse
qsenee of one organ—the j Liver—having ceased i

proprietors has made it 1 his study, in a practice of
more than twenty years, fy* to find some remedy where

which it is liable, /*\
To prove th§t this re medy is at last found, any

These Gums remove all ri morbid or bad matter from
the system, supplying in their place a healthy flow
of bile, invigorating the stomach, causing food to
digest well, purifying the blood, giving tone and
health to the whole wa Jr. chinery, removing the
causa of the disease—of ri fecting a radical cure.
One dose after eating is H sufficient to relieve the

THE LIVER IVIGORATOR is a scientific Medical
discovery, and is daily working cures, almost too great
to believe. It cures as if by magic, even the first dose

HAYWOOD’S
BALM OF SAVANNAH!
FOR
Cleansing, Nourishing & Beautifying
THE HAIR.
IN presenting the BALM OF SAVANNAH to the
A public, the proprietor does so without any ot tLe
hesitation attending the introduction of a r,ew and ue
tried article, tor it has new hocu fifteen years before the
public, and each year !-»•' added to its popularity The
demand for it having increased so far beyond my pre
vious facilities for its manufacture, the proprietor has re
eently completed arrangements for producing it cn &
more extensive scale, and at the same time adding to its
former excellence, by the result of a long practical ex
perience in its use.
The following vouchers are gentlemen well known,
, and can be attested :
Savannah, August 3,1858
J. M. naywood, Agent—Dear Sir: I cheerfully
comply with my promise, to give you mv opinion ol the
merits of your Balm of Savannah After using it for
some two years, I am prepared to speak from experience,
and do not hesitate to pronounce it the be3t prepara
tion for the hair that I have overused. For several
yearn 1 had suffered from dandruff, which, at times, es
pecia Jy during bad health, threatened lo destroy my
hair I tried many remedies, which had be n recom
mended to me, without benefit, until I made a trial of
your Balm, w hich not only removed the dandruff, but
kept my head free from it, at the same time stimulating
the growth of the hair and imparting to it a healthy ap
pearance. I have recommended it to my friends, simi
larly afflicted, who, in every instance, experienced aimi
for benefits from its use. J esteem it a pleasant and
convenient article for dressing the hair, possessing most
la the virtues claimed for the popular cosmetics of the
day, with none of their deleterious qualifies. I feel con
fident that it only needs to be known to the public to
become universally popular.
Very respectfully yours,
W. T Thompson,
Editor oi Savannah Morning News,
TO Aid. WHOM IT MAT CONCERN :
The object of this is to state tLat I have, for some
months, used Mr. Haywood’s Hair Tonic—known as
the Balm of Savannah—aud have found it incomparably
superior to any other article of the kind. Its use twice
a week is quite sufficient, cot on!v to disengage the
dandruff', Ac., front the hair, but to prevent its formation
in auy applicable quantity. It maintains the hair too,
iu that moist and pleasant condition, w hich so many
other specifics pretend to do, but almost always fail - iu
so far as my experience goes. J. L. Locke,
Late Editor of the Savannah Republican,
Mat 26, 1858.
Mr. J, M Haywood, Agent : It gives me pleasure to
certify to the unequalled qualities of your Balm of Sa
vaunah. It is the beit tonic, for the hair, as well as the
most effectual exterminator of dandruff I have ever Cried
My hair has been inclined t > fail out since my attack of
Yellow Fever in 1854, and among all the preventives l
have tried, the Balm of Savannah ha.; b-• n the mod
successful. This much I say most cheerfully.
Yours, Ac., P. W. ALEXANDER,
Late Editor of the Savannah Republican.
