eighty-six negroes belonging to the estate of the late Isaac Kam
say, of said county—sold by order ofthe Executors, on a credit
of twelve months, without interest. There were 1 in the lot
about fifteen aged negroes, some, four or five ruptured, and ten
or twelve sucklings, but the whole gang ave raged ?G3O. This
sale does not look much like hard times in Columbia county,
nor any want of confidence in the “peculiar institution.” The
following are the prices of some of tiie men: Jordan, 42 years
old, 41,465. Ben, 80years, $1,3.30. Black Ben, 18years, $1,6 0.
Bob, 13 years, $1,760. Lewis, 10 years old, 41,106. Nelson, 2-5

SOIL-LIFTING PLOW!
Y\T HEN a surface Plow is run at a depth of twelve inches,
1Y and a two-horse Soil Lilting Plow follows, which isca
jiable of disintegrating t.o a depth of fifteen inches more, there
is a total disintegrated depth of twenty-seven inches, and those
who so practice will -find tiiat they have another farm beneath
that represented on their map. A smaller size of this Plow,
(one horse) thinner in the sole and more dart-like in its figure,
is an admirable imiilement, for cultivating crons, and will do
the work of more Ilian forty meu witli hoes. With the corn
crop tins tool may run cl. sc alongside the com, and to the lull
depth of twelve inches when the corn is but three inches high,
and before the roots occupy the space between the rows ; this
will lilt, the soil, move every corn plant with the soil, ami for so
slight a distance as not to separate the particles from the roots,
yet so completely loosening the mass that the plant mav be
picked up with the fingers. This is more thorough cultivation
than can he obtained hy one hundred hoeings, leaving the soil
in better tilth and cutting of no roots. More than twenty
thousand of these Plows were sold last year.

COMMERCIAL NEWS.
Liverpool Cotton Market. —Sales of cotton
for the week 33,000 bales, of which speculators
and exporters took 4,000 bales each. The mar.
ket opened very dull %and. decline, and even more
for inferior grades. On Thursday, there was an
improved tone but no advance in prices.
On Friday the sales were 8,000 bales, with a
firm market and speculators and exporters took
2,000 bales. The authorized quotations were—

CONGRESSIONAL.
Washington, Dec. 5. —Pending the reference on
tho President’s Message an exciting debate occur
red between Messrs, llale, Brown, Iverson, Wig
fall and Saulisbury. The remarks of the former
were particularly miscalculated to suppress sec
tional irritation. They were promptly responded
to by Messrs. Brown, Iverson and Wigfall.
In the House, the Homestead bill was passed by
5G majority. All Southerners voted, and voted
against the bill.
Passed viva voce the Pension and West Point
Appropriation bills, and in Committee of the
Whole referred the President’s Message to appro
priate Committees. The House then adjourned.
In the Committee of Ways and Means, Mr.
Phelps moved to issue $10,000,000 of Treasury
notes to relieve the embarrassments ofthe country.
Mr. Boteler’s Committee of one from each State,
to consider the President’s Message, will he ap
pointed on Monday next. The time is given to
enable the Speaker to make the best, possible se.

Albany - , Dec. 5. —The electors cast the vote of
New York for Lincoln and Hamlin.
Harrisburg, Dec. s. —The vote of Pennsylvania
was cast to-day for Lincoln and Hamlin.
Richmond, Va., Dec. s.—The six Breckinridge
electors declined to take advantage of the tech
nicalities of the law, ami refused to vote. Their
vacancies were filled and the vote of the State
was cast for Bell and Everett.
SOUTHERN PLANTERS CONVENTION.
Macon, Ga., Dec. 6.— The exhibition of the
Southern Planters Convention will open to the
public on Monday, Dec. 10th.
THE INAUGURATION.
The lion. G. W. Stone, of Alabama, will deliver
the opening address.
The Governor and both branches of the Geor
gia Legislature will be in attendance at the Fair
on Tuesday, the 11th inst.
Delegates of the Southern States to the South
ern Planters’ Convention, will meet on Wednes
day the 12th.
Judges of the exhibition will enter upon their
duties on Thursday and Friday, the 13th and
14th.
The great Plowing Feat will come off on Satur
day the 15th.
• The following week will be devoted to the ex
hibition of stock.
The cargo of goods on exhibition is rich and
attractive, and claims the attention of tho mer
chants of the adjoining States.

New Orleans, Dec. s.—The steamship Austin
has arrived, with Brazos dates to tho Ist inst.
A proclamation has been published for the elec
tion of anew Presidential elector. Lerdo Dela

believed it will be taken.
