from the St. JAMES's CHRONICLE. IFXPECT, Mr. Baldwin; that, if you print this at all, you will print it cn Saturday sight, as it concerns the business of the fol lowing day —I am a frequenter sometimes of one church, and sometimes of another, but am always to be found in otic or other of them on Sunday morning, and, # :ny busi ness there is of a serious kind, I am never so uneafv as when 1 meet with any thing to in terrupt either my devotion or that of other people.— But, Sir, what I am to complain of is, that there are a number of idle, gofliping people, male aod female, who come to church for no oiWvpurpofc but because they Cannot so well meet any where e!fe—A pew full of such was liehind me last Sunday at a certain church that lliall be nameless, and by their tittle-tattle so mixed and confounded the Litany, that you would have thought they were contriving to make cross-readings of it. Only think, Sir, how it mu ft perplex any attentive person to hear such combinations as the following— Did you ever lec such a prepofierous bon net ?—“The Lord have mercy upon us.” You’ll come and dine with me to-day, we Lave a family diant'f—“‘As it wab in the be ginning,. &c.” The King of Pruflia is the heft ally we can have—“ Because there is none other that fighicth for us.” Do co.r.e, Tom, my wife and I will be very glad—“ to make our common Applications twto thee.” * I never saw her look so charmingly— “ From fornication and all other deadlv tins, &c.” She is a poor creature, I wonder what the men can fee about her for thy part —“ From envy, hatred, malice and all uncharitable ucis, &c. Mendoza has accepted Humphries’ chal lenge, I am allured—“ From bat tie and muf ther, and from sudden death, &c. The Prince too has laid another bet— <s fi nally to beat down Satan under c.'ur feet.” With a thousand other inftanccs I might bring; but I hope, Sir, that, when this mat ter is properly represented, people will think it reafunable to attend to but one thing at a time. As I know that your paper is read by some of the parties offending as above-meti . tinned, I have to beg a speedy iufertiou to thi3 letter, and am, Sir, youths, DOMIN’E. 305300 S X3oC>' 3&3&X SSL LONDON, January i. By the permifiion of I)r. On Thursday he was so well as to play two games of back-gammon with his usual judg ment and accuracy. This morning, at half part nine o’clock, died, at his house in Privy Garden, the Right Honorable Charles Wolfrane Cornwall, many years Speaker of the H 'fefe of Commons, and member of Parliament for Rye in Sufiex. By this unfortunate event, there will not be any diftuthon until next week. The death of the Speaker throws public affairs into a new lunation. The House of Commons is now compleatlr disjointed, be cause it his been heret'ofoie an iudifpeufible form of Parliament to prefetn the Speaker to the King for his tpyal approbation. Yesterday tlie Cabinet Miniflers had an audience of the Prince of Wales at Carleton House, on the bufincls of a Regency. We are given to underftarid, from the most refpcftable authority, that the present Aditiini flration will resign their place, as soon as the Regency Bilf, and that for the guardfrmftiip of the King’s person, have palled boh Hbufes of Parliament. His fdloW-Citizens, fully ap prized of his fentimeuts in the late General Convention, which were opposed tor the new' fyflem, were so convinced of his abilities and integrity as to elett him oiie of their Federal Representatives; and that fiatefmau, whose patriotism has induced him to comply with their willies, in opposition lb his private opi nion, has accepted the office.' It may there fore be presumed, that his judgment, uninflu enced by an enthuliaftick prepofleflion in fa vor of the new government, will enable him clearly to difeern its benefits and defers. The proof of moderation which lie has already exhibited, is a pledged of hi; future equani mity ; and the union, as well as his more immediate conflituents, ought to exult in tlie , pofleffion of this truly illuftfious patriot. This • circumstance, trifling as it appears, causes much speculation among our politicians, and no small degree of mortification to many who conceive the Hate much degraded by this Angular infiance of republican manners in its chief - magistrate.” 11.
