THUS, fame tall tree that long has
flood
The glory of ita native wood,
By storms deftroy’d, or length of yeare
Demand* the tribute of our tears.
The pile that took long time to raise

We must regret the loft the mere.
So long befriended by yrur art,

the Commiflioners are compelled to refprt

obvious reasons in favor of the eftablifhraent
will, they hope, induce a general and effec
tual contribution. Augulta is the center of
the commerce of the state. Placed at the
head of navigation, it will naturally be the
mart of ail the produlfion tb the weft of it ;
and of rourfe mufl be t he ware-house of all
the importations to be given in exchange.
Thi* will tend to eularge the limits of the
town, and to inerfcafe its population, and the
value of every lot. Vice and licentioufnCfs
will grow with these, unless checked by the •
salutary restraints of the lawa ; and the hold
ing ot Courts and impnfonment of those who
deierve it, in a place crowded with people,
will diffufe the examples of jufticeand pun;(h
meat. Society will bo improved and regu
lated ; government will be obeyed and ri*
(pelted ; and the commerce btt ween the mer
chant and planter protected.
