BOSTON, Nov. 2x.
IMPORT A N r /—-
Yefierday arrived, brig Industry, cap
tain Mvrick, 32 days from Li firm. The
day before captain M. left Lisbon, the
American consul told him, that informa
tion had just and was believed,
that the Spanish fleet had gone into the
M diierrancan, and had fallen in with an
Ergiifh fleet of tranfporrs, and five or fix
fail of men of wat, from Corsica, sup
pofrd to be bound for Gibralcer, and
had taken the whole of them, and car
ried them into A'icant, in the Streigh.’s.
A flonp was to fail the next day, after
captain M. far-this port ; wliich he fup
pofeswil! bring the newspaper contain
ing this account.
[Bofton Chronicle.]
NEW YORK, Nov. 29.
Extraft of a letter from an American gen
tleman at Malaga, dated October iz,
1796, to his corrvfpondcnt in New-
York, per the schooner Lark, arrived
i at this port a few days t .aft iu a short
passage.
« War has been declared by Spain
Sgainft England, and already have feve
lal captures been made by both arties.
Admiral Mann in coming from Italy,
’©ith a squadron of seven fail of the line,
*vas chafed by the Spanish fleet of feven
feer. fail within 3 or 4 leagues of Gib
ralter, but fortunately for Mann, he loft
but one tranfpott with fi< k Englifli, and
- «ne brig loaded with fulphur.”
The exrraft of a letter from Malaga
this day inserted, leads us to qneflion the
authenticity of the news, bv capt. Mvrick
©t the capture of admiral Jervis. At the
date of the letter, a young man belonging
to a mercantile house in this city, had
just returned from Alicant --and nothing
ofthe fate ofadmiral Jervis is mentioned.
Other circumftanccs, however, favor the
truth of this intelligences
Almost every arfi v al from Europe an
nounces some new success of the French
jsation, in abridging the commerce of
(Great Britain. The treaty with jhe !
king of Naples seems indeed to have had
that objedf principally in view. The
Er.ijifh can now enter fcarceiy a Angle
port betwetn Gibraltar and the Gulph
©/ Venice. Corfi a, and a small port in
the Tuscan terri o'y, port Ferrajo, are
ail the harbors left to their (hipping, and
the Utter was seized bv force, byway
©r retaliation for the feizore of Leghorn
by the French.
The article from Malaga indicates that
the Spanish court has yielded to the views
f ©t France, and demands of all merchants
an recount of British property in their
hands, probably with a view of confifca
ticn.
The Sritifh fleet in rhe Mrdirrrxane??*
hiu a perilous fkuauon. The Spanish *
: which ha* paflfrd the • Strait^S^Pj
..the*-French Toulon fleet, will make a
formidable force of more than 40 lh.ps,
of the line-—double to admiral Jervis’s
force.
The objeft of Richery’s expedition to
Newfoundland seems now explained j it
was to excite the diversion of tip British
naval force off, and render it difficult or
irapoffible for the mi.iiftry to fend an ade
quate reinforcement to admiral Jervis.
Admiral Curtis, with 7 (hips ol the
line, is hunting tor Richerv, when those
fhios are wanted in the Mediterranean,
to affi.t admiral Jervis.
Whether the united fleets of France,
S;wirt and Holhnd will ultimately be a
match tor the Bririlh navy, time will de
termine. But that French llratagehi will
be an overmatch for the heads of the
Briulh minillry, there is no realon to
question.
It has been dated, that the evacuation
ot Corsica by the Biitilh had 'alien place.
The probability, therefore, is, th it fir
Gilbert Elliot, late viceroy of that 111 m i,
with his retinue, were on board the
fleet, lately taken, returning to Gibral
tar.
The importance of Genoa, which has
(hut its.ports againit th*- English, may he
efthnated from the tircumltance of Eng
land having kept an arobaflador there
finde the revolution.
Private accounts (late, that a French
f ju.idron full of troo, s had failed against
Corsica.
The Dutch fleer, 16 fail of the line,
has failed, moll probably to form a junc
tion with the combined French and Spa
nifli fl-ets. —The intelligence was re
ceived in London with unusual alarm.
Nov. 30. Whether the capture be-faft
or not, it is impossible for us to tell, but
if one affertton be brought to disprove
another, it ought to be fairly done.
Captain Myrick is said to have arrived at
Boflon, November 20» in 32 days !rom
L fbbn, which gives us October 19 for
his dep rtur®, seven days larer th.m the
letter from Malaga—lt then appears,
that the British packet brought the ac
count to Lisbon, on the 18th October,
fix days after rhe date-of the letter, in
which period, agrecablv to modern times,
whole navies might have been deilroyed,
and oar editor’s letter writer and inSur
niant know nothing of the mailer.
