After mentioning the treaty with the
pope, the Star fays—
Thus has Buonaparte completed the
conquert cf Italy, and Imperial Rome has
only been able to save hrrfclf by a timely
submission to the terms which he has been
pie a fed to dictate : What these terms are
we are not informed, the directory not
having vet pubiiflied them; but, accord
ing to ihe journals, the pope has agreed
to pay to the republic 30 millions:"He
has made the formal, complete, and per
petual renunciation of Avignon and the
Comtat Venaffin. He has also ceded to
France all the pi&urcs and statues, and
other cbjefts of art, which the French
army hav. found on the feene ol their con
quests in his territory ; and he has also
ceded to the republic Bologna and Fer
rara, with the whole of Romagna. We
give these only, however, as the unau
thenticited rumours of the Paris prints.
They are extremely improbable, and we
dare fity will turn out to be falfe. In some
of the small papers we find also the fol
lowing letter from Buonaparte:
“ Tolentino, r Ventofc, Feb. 19.
“ CITIZEN DIRECTORS,
** The commission of learned men has
made a good harvest at Ravjenna, Rimi
ni, Pecaro, Ancona, Loretto, and
Perugia j the produce will be immediate
ly expedited to Paris. With this, joined
to all that ball be sent to you from Rome,
vve (hafl have all that ie beautiful in Italy,
wi?h the exception of a few pieces of ait
at Turin and Naples ”

r ; he French army in Italy have (ra fer
nized, as our readers may well fuppole,
with the republic of S*an Marino. The
envoy of Buonaparte made a very warm
and kind address to the magillrates of
that illujlricus republic, to which they
made an anfwcr of fuitablt dignity, and
concluded by desiring to farm an alliance
with their brother republic.
The executive directory have publish
ed a proclamation ad lire fled to the prima
ry and electoral assemblies, recommend
ing to their moll serious attention the
duties which they owe to their country ;
in cxercifing important franchifes at
their election in Germinal; it urges them
to hold themselves .ipart from all ta&ions,
' to deceive their hopes and to defeat their
meafuics; it recommends them to avoid
the royalists on the one hand, and'the
anarchirts on the o*her.
On Sunday the ballot was to begin
for the important drawing of the one third
of the affi mbly to go out; an event, which,
of course, ve*y particularly occupies the
attention of all the f actions of Paris.
It does not appear that the great event
which happened in England on Sunday
preceding had reached Paris} it cannot,
however, remain a secret above a day or
two more.
The Hamburg mail, due on Wednes
day, arrived yefterday.--*The archduke
Charles has commenced his military ca
reer with success, in having defeated the
advanced guard of the French army,
commanded by general Maffer.a; after
v’hich his royal highness proceeded to
Vienna to consult on a plan of operations.
The recent success which attended the
operation* of the archduke Charles, in
the Tyrolefe, has, 2s was expefted, ar
rested Buonaparte in his progress to
Rone. Previous to this, the republican
general difiniffed the envoy of the Pope
unheard, declaring that in the capital
alcr.c would he treat with his holiness.
On receiving, however, advice of the of
fenfive movements of the Auflrians, and
possibly calculating on some opposition
from the command of'“general Celli, he
listened to the renewed prepofafs b: the
Pon<*, and concluded- a hasty peace ! ! !

The civil power in Soain has lately
interfered against a sentence of the in

the concerns of peace will be.ferioully en

both look towards it with pleasure, even
the emigrants desire an end of the war.

A London paper of March 8, fays—
“ the American funds have risen in con

given to these of England. The deter

BALTIMOR E, April 24.
At the general court for the Eaftcrn
fliore, now fitting, a negro woman, the
property of Mr. Ecclefton, of Kent coun
ty, in this date, was found guilty of the
murder of a child of one of her fellow
slaves, which Ihe is said to have delhoy
cd by means of laudanum. Humanity
(hudders at the guilt of this theft atrocious
wretch. She has, since her condemna
tion, acknowledged to have detlroyed,
by poison, three children of Robert Dunn,
F/q. a most refpeftable and worthy gen
man of Kent. Her motive for this inolt
horrid ad, appears to have been an ex
pectation of being free, if all the mem
bers of a particular family (the Bowers’s)
from whom (he was possessed, were dead.
She had been informed, that a clause in
the will of the late Mr. Bowers, of the
fame county, had destined his Haves to be
free, if all his family should die ! Let this
serve as a solemn warning to those who are
disposed :o testamentary liberation of their
slaves! The story cf this dreadful affair is
, • «
truly (hocking.
The uniiappy parents, returning from
the funeral of their firft child, found a
second dead 1 And by the time they had
paid the lait offices to the second, the third
expired ! What pen—what eloquence can
deferibe the condition of the Unhappy
parents!—The children expired in excru
ciating tortures.
The next attempt was upon the life of
her mistress, Mrs. Ecclefton, who, af
ter sustaining torments undeferibabb*,
with great difficulty recovered-.-but (he
continues in a (fate thar leaves little hope
that Ihe will ever again enjoy the bles
sing of health-—such a (hock has a de
licate conftifutinn fiefivred!
Four children were a£tu?Hy killed—
and the life of a fifth person nearly fa
crificed. Where this horrid bnfinefs
would have Terminated, God only knows,
if, by his divine, interposition, the hel
lifit purpose had not been arrested where
it was.
