Mt. Smith,
I AM not alarmed at tlie reports which
have been so indulhioufly circulated
. Rgainft me by my enemies, for some time
p*ft* well knowing they have nothing in
I heir power. I have nothing to feat from
them. When they were more formidable
they drove against me in vain; and it is
too late in the day for the wretched re
mains of envy, accompanied with the so-
Jitary badge of disappointed (peculation,
to mafic their fophi&ical rcpublicanifin,
and thereby to break down the great bar
tiers of justice, and embrue their wicked
bands in the blood of innocent men, with
impunity. Neither do I think their dog
matical aflertinns against me will change
the opinion of one good citizen, that is
informed of the faA. But as a number
of my friends have requefled me to pub
li(h the following documents, 1 will thank
you to give them a place in your Satur
day's Paper.
That I was an immoral charaArr, while
my reftdcnce was in Buikc county, could
only be thought of by drangers, to me,
or drangers to the truth, which mod ful
ly appears by a certificate signed by the
commidioners of the academy of that coun
ty. Their charaAer and danding in life
)s such w hich will give due weight there
to. I fend you another, signed by sun
dry well known and acknowledged ma
gi ft rates of said county.
That I took a bribe from J. Taylor,
of Washington county, could have been
thought of by none, but those who would
bare taken it themselves, had they an op
. pot f unity; the young man's affidavit
fpraks for ifrlf. And
That I (hould have been capable of
Claiming a piece of gold, at Washington
Court that was not my own, was never
thought of, or believed by any, but those
plot-formers and plunderers of charaAer,
who formed and nourished the unheard
of scheme. A scheme, at which the
X)ey of Algiers would have shuddered,
ttnd the king of the Creek Nation, hid
Ins face.
But men that can fell their country,
thereby become rich, ride in fine carri
ages, and build magnificent temples at
(be expence of poderity, and then round-
Jy assert that it was the best thing ever
took place for the people, can do any
tiling.
Mr. Phillip Dillard is the gentleman
from whom I received the piece of gold,
which I claimed; 1 fend you his affidavit
so that purpose. This gentleman being
there the morning of the dispute, was
koneft enough to publicly tell the people
that he gave me that very piece of money.
But if there (hould remain a single doubt
tfboat the propriety of my conduA on
that buftnefs, the certificate of the ho
norable judge Few, will mod clearly ex
plain and remove it; as he is the only
person on earth, that knows my conduit
on that oocafion, and T thank God, that
such a rcfpcAable character was present
gnd knowing to my conduit.
The report, that I was ordered from
iha houfc and forbade eating at the table
of the landlord, is of a piece with the
fed, as will appear by the affidavit of one
of the landlord's neighbours, ofWafhing
&>n county.

ON the evening of the 31st of March,
Mr. Caldwell shewed me a piece
of gold, which he said was a very heavy
guinea, that he had received as a fee ; and
this morning before I rose from bed, my
negro boy brought into the room a piece
of gold, which he said he found at the
door. It occurred to me, that it might
be Caldwell’s, and I laid it on the chim
ney-piece, near the bed, until he (Cald.
well) came in, which was in less than
half an hour after, and I then asked him
if he had loft any money ? on searching of
his pockets, he said that he had loft a
piece of gold, the fame which he had
(hewn me the last evening, and claimed
the piece which the boy gave me, which
I delivered to him without hesitation;
and the guinea, (or piece of gold) which
Mr. Caldwell afterwards produced, ap
peared to be the fame, that he had fhtwn
me the evening before, and which 1 hand
ed to him, from the chimney-piece.
