A SYMPTOM.
We are credibly informed, that a pair
of iron 4 pounders were fold on Wednes
day last, at public auction, lor two hun
dred and thirty dollars.
The Britilh government has publilhed
a rood lamentable “ appeal to the people,”
alluded to in the king's fpecch. Throogh
' out the whole of this instrument, the
powerful allies of Britaiu are not once
mentioned.
The amount of flour (hipped from the
port of Philadelphia for the year 1797,
was 156,330 bis. and 732 bis. of mid
dlings.
Died, in England, rear admiral MUR
RAY, late commanding on the Halifax
station, well known for his spoliation on
American property.
RICHMOND, January 8.
On Friday last, the house of delegates
palfed a refoiution declaring that all thofc
laws which veiled property in (he Prote
stant Episcopal Church, and acknowledg
ed that church as eftablilhcd, were a vio
lation of the principles ol the couftitution,
and contrary to the right of religious
freedom, and ought therefore to b: re
pealed. The votca on this important
question were 95 to 74.—A bill is di
refled to be brought in puifuant to the
above refoiution.
CHARLESTON, January 20.
Several letters from Philadelphia re
ceived by. the mail which arrived yester
day, mention that no doubt existed, that
when the question for permitting the mer
chants to arm their vessels, (hould be
taken up, of its being passed.
January 22.
We learn by capt. Hazard, that there
Was an embargo laid on at the Havannah,
on the roth ult. for the money vcflVls
expelled from Vera Cruz, which was not
taken off until the day before he failed.
An Englilh frigate had a severe engage
ment with two Spanifti letter ol marque
(hips, and captured both of them; they
were reported to have had each, large
quantities of money on board.
January 24.
The trial of the (hip GadfJen, Hey
ward, captured on her passage from the
Havannah to this porr, by the Britilh
frigate Thetis, captain Cochran, and
sent into Halifax, commenced on the
20th ult. prior to the receipt of the ne
cessary documents. The cargo was con
demned as Spanifti property ; the (hip
and money cleared.
We learn, that Thomas Waring, Esq.
is appointed naval officer for the pore of
Charlcfton.
January 25.
Capt. Cartlett of the schooner Nymph,
in ten days from Cape Nicholas Nole, in
forms, that on the 4th instant, the Britilh
(hips of war, the Rcgulus of 44 guns,
Magicienne of 36 guns, Diligence (1 top
of war, arrived at the Mole from an ex
pedition against Porto Rico, having cut
out 2 (hips, 3 brigs, 5 schooners and one
sloop—The Regulus had had her fore
top-mad (hot away; the Magicienne both
her main and fore-mad wounded; and the
Diligence her fore-mail wounded. The
prizes were sent to Jamaica on the sth
instant, under convoy of a (hip of war.
A squadron, composed of the following

on the 1 ith in ft. for Jamaica, to take on
board some more prifonen, with which
they were t« proceed to Laguira on the
Spanifti Main, to procure the exchange
oi the crew of the Britilh frigate Hcr
mine; which if reiufed, they intend to

from London bound to Jamaica, pa fled

January 26.
In the house of reprefentitives of the U
nited States, on the 4th inst. Mr. Harper
called for decision on a refoiution which
he laid upon the table the day before yes-
terday, propping the appointment of a
committee to bring in a bid! to prohibit
citizens of the United States from cater
ing into the military or naval fervitjr of
any foreign prince or dates. The fcfo
lution was carried 46 to 22, and a com
mittee of three appointed.
