MASSACRE OF ALL THE ITHITI*
AT CA FRANCOIS,
By the Pilot Greyhound, cant. San*
lord, in 16 days from Capc-Francois we
have a confirmation *of the maffacrc and pil
lage at that and other'places of the Ifl.nd, \
oy Gen. Dellalines’ noops, which com
merced on the 19th day of April, ard wh#
continued, without imcrmllfion till the
14th of May, All the French
.including men, women and children, to the
{number of between 2000 and 2500, were ?
put to the fwerd or bayonet at the Cape
during the above period. On the 14th
linft. after the work, of definition was com
pleted, Deflalincs left the Cape on his way
to his head.quarters byway of Port-dc-Paix
andGonaivcs. On the 2id of April, Fort
Dauphin was pillaged, and all the whites,
,to the number of about ninety men, wo*
men and children were massacred, and a
part ol the town deltroyed, A few days
after, the French inhabitants of St. jago
and other parts of the interior, wete cf
corted to the Cape, and there destroyed irt
the mod wanton manner.
On the 12th of May, Deffalrncs issued a
proclamation (acopy t 'which follow*) call
ing upon the Spanilh inhabitants of the city
of Santo Domingo, to declare themfelvcs
for or againrt him, allowing them fifteen
days to determine. This proclamation was
made in confcquence, it was said, ofTji
having received difpaUhe* Ircm Port-au..
Prince, informing him of the arrival oft»
iclnforccmcnt of French troops at Santo
Domingo.
To enter into a full detail of the parti
culars of the maifacre and plunder of the
Cape, would be a painful talk, and afford
no plcafurc to our readers, but we are as
sured that from the beginnning to the end
ol the hclliflr work, the mod unparalleled
cruelties were inflicted upon the whites in
a manner toolhneking to relate.
Men, women and children, were lucked
down w irh swords and plunged with bayo
nets, Women with children in their arms,
were seen flying through the ftrects to avoid
their pmfuers; and being overtaken by
them, one rhrud of a bayonet pierced both,
mother and child!
After this dreadful maffacrc the dead lay
in the ftreefs for three days, when the in
habitants were ordered to remove thofc
within a certain didancc of each dwelling—
which were afterwards dragged off and
. thrown into a ditch at the foot of a moun-,
; tain.
t Previous to the inaflacre, certain of the
blacks in order to obtain the property of
the whites, which was secreted, called on
I them individually, and promised to spare
.their live# if they would give it up, having
[obtained it, not one of them was excepted
jfrora the general maffacrc 1 The property
.thus pcifidioully obtained, {confiding of
! gold, jewels and plate) was said to be im
mense. Gold was brought to the town in
1 hatsfull by the blacks, and offered in cx
-5 change for silver for less than half its value.
■ Wc are informed that Drffalines has de
. creed that any Frenchman henceforward
t who shall arrive in St. Domingo faall be
, put to death.
To (hew the vindiftive cruelty of
the blacks and their inveteracy against the
t whites, we (hall mention the following faft:
. Just before the maffacrc took place, a Da*
jnifh fchocner belonging to St, Thomas,
. having on board a number of French paffen
• gers, after failing was pursued by armed
.boats, overtaken and brought back, and
. the Danilh captain, crew and passengers all
. put to death.
t The few Americans that were at the
. Cape, remained unhurt. With the except
> tion of the printer, and a few mechanics at
the Cape, whose fcrvices were too ufeful to
be spared, not one Frenchman survived the
general dedruftion.
At the date of our advices, Dcffalinca
was creeping strong fortifications in the
mountains.
His force consists of 60,000 men.
