THE DAILY TIMES. THE CITY, New Advertisements. Our readers will see by an advertisement in an other column, that the exercises of the Columbus female Academy, under the superintendence of Mr C W. Chapman and lady, will bo resumed on the first Monday in October. Drs. Crimes & Wingfield, have associated themselves together fir the practice of medicine and surgery. Let the afflicted read their card and give them a call- Messrs. Ellis &, Mathis are offering fine coun try lard and hams for sale. Lovers of good ea ting are requested to call round. The country hams and lard advertised by Ellis and Mathis, are said to boas fine as arc put up. Those who havo tried them, say so. r The’ollowing beautiful Hues wore written by a citizen of this State and were the insp ; ration of a fat i er’s g- ief on the death of a favorite son They were not intended for publication. They came into our possession at the handsof a friend, and we hope we do not offend in commit ting them to th i public. Their beauty is our apologv. “I A woke-—ml behold It. was a Dream ” Man learns, from sorrows dark and deep And pleasure’s fitful gleam, This world is but a place to weep, And human life—a dream. I dreamed I had a noble boy, Of lofty, manly grace. My hope, my life, my pride and joy, The first of all his race. I dreamed that, when a little child, He sat upon my knee, And nlaved and prattled.romped and smiled With all an infant’s glee. I dreamed that from that, hanpvhour, Me grew to manhood braved But never dreamed so fair a flower, Bloomed only for the grave. In that dark eve, no look was seen That told of shame or sin, But from it sparkled clear and keen, The intellect within <. Oh. what a mind was there! how bright The hope it gavo to me ! He seemed a burning, shining light, Born for posterity. For years he lived, and moved and spoke, And brief those years and and seoni; For eoon. in agony. I woke, And lo! ‘twas all a dream ! But light -vill on the dreamer dawn And shadows melt away; Whn sunrise ushers irCtho morn, Of everlasting day. Then,l rnay hone to meet my boy, Saved, sanctified, forgiven, And dream no more, but share the joy The “waking bliss” of Heaven. Brunswick Items.—We clip tho follow ing from the Brunswick Herald : At a meeting of the City Council, it was, on motion of Alderman Blain, resolved that the Quarantine laws of this port do not extend to steamboats. Adopted. jjgir’To a friend, who had married a lady who was on the point of taking the vail, Jerrold said “Ah, she evidently thought you better than nun !” Information Wanted.—Daniel Davies, one of the proprietors of the “New Era and Commercial Advertiser,” Newbern, N. C. wants information of the whereabouts of his two sons, Edward T. and Daniel D., aged respectively 33 and 28 years. When last heard of Edward TANARUS, was pub lishing two papers at Santa Fe, New Mexi co. Daniel D. had lately removed to Texas where, it is believed, he is now residing. The Press will confer a favor on an aged father by assisting him to make the disco very. His sons if discovered, can address him at Newborn, N. C. An Eventful Honeymoon —A corres pondent of ihe Athens Banner, writing fn>m Laurensville, Gwinnett County, Sept, 18th, says: Mr. John Roper, one of the South Caroli- j na chivalry, was married about two weeks ago; came to this county and on last Mon day, stole a negro from Mr. A. G. Holmes, was arrested and brought here yesterday; today he plead guilty, and was sentenced to the penitentiary six years. An eventful honeymoon, our readers will say.
