Hew Advertisements.
Our readers are referred to the advertisement of
Mr. John H. Bass, of Ala., who offers for sale
valuable lands and negroes.
Don't tad to attend that interesting public mee
mg at the auction store ot Messrs. Ellis Jt Ma
nia to-night. If Ellis’ argument does not prove
very mcid, nor his eloquence profound, perhaps
i a books will enable him to throw some light on
ilia subject.
Tie Austrian Mission.—Speculating on
’he reasons winch led to the shelving of Mr. i
Beitnotif, ami the appointment of William j
Preston, of ivy., to the Embaesadorship of
Austria, the true Delta thus concludes:
•‘Preston, of Kentukv, is a man in every j
‘•ease of the term, a true son of a noble
State,’and his appointment wiil give univer
sal satisfaction, as it ought and if only fol
nved up, as we are told it will be. by a clear
ing out oi a vast deat of rubbish from public
office, everv one will confess, as we ardently
10, that a greater calamity than the re-elec- ,
,ou of James Buchanan might befall our
country.
Fhost.—Memphis and Nashville papers
eport a moderately heavy ft net visible m
:ieir respective Vicinities on Friday last.—
The Memphis Bulletin says;
‘•We learn that it extended as far South j
is Water Valley, in Mississippi- At Cor- j
nrii and Grand Junction it appeared to a
oout the same extent that it did here, From
a dispatch received here yesterday, we learn 1
::at there was none in New Orleans. Its |
appearance at tins time wiil prove i'atai, per
haps, to young corn in the not to ms, planted
after the subsidence ot the waters, and now
m roasting ear.’’
Our exchanges from Clarkesville, Tenn..
and from Huntsville, A., also report a frost
on the morning of the same day.
Naked Trvth.—The late exceutric John
Holmes,used frequently,in his addresses to
different juries, to explain the meaning of
the “naked truth.'* by relating the follow
ing fable:
••Truth and Falsehood traveling one
warm day, met at a river, and both went
in to bathe at tiie same place. Falsehood
coming first out of the water, took his
companion's clothes, and left his own vile
raiment and then went his way. Truth
■otntng out of the water, sought in vain his
own proper dress—disdaining the garb of
falsehood. Truth started, ail naked in
pursuit of the thief, but not being swill of
root, has never overtaken .the fugitive.—
Ever since he lias been knowu as Naked
T ruth.
Tiie report that Johxsox J. Hooper. Esq.,
Editor of the Montgomery (Ala) Mail (au
thor of Simon Suggs) was about to retire
from the press, is without foundation.—
Hooper says that when he retires it wiil be
to a place six Teet below the surface rf his
mother earth—a change ot position which
even the most consistent editors among us
mast, sooner or later, ma;e. We hope,
however, that Hooper will continue his pil
grimage anove ground so long as there is a
Democratic party for him to war against in
Alabama: and this, we take it, is equivalent
to wishing him an eternity upon earth. —
