THE DAILY TIMES, THE CITY. The Plank Road. Tiiia great business highway is undergoing a thorough repair uader the eaper atendence ol L G. Bowers, Agent of the Marine Bank in thiscit?. The work has been ia progress for some tune, and, when completed, the road will be ‘'as good as new ” In the winter months especially it ia an absolute necessity to the forwarding and receiving business of our city, and, heuce, the efforts of the Company and the energy of their agent are highly appreciated. New Advertisements. Messrs. A. C. Satmders & Cos. We invite the attention of onr readers U> the ad vertisement of the above firm in another column We do no more. We ask them to go and inspect the r lirxe and splendid assortment of Shoes, at No. 102 Broid street. We have examined for ourselves, and declare .that in the article of Ne gro Shoes, his stock excels any we ever saw. We e mostly recommend our planting friends to give them a call beFrepurcha ing their winter supply. Oor .'aay readers will also tied something fine and cheap ia the way of Gater- and Walking Shoes. Tney are expecting daily a largo supply of Geats fine boots; indeed, they will have some thing to suit every body, both as to quality and pnee. Don’t forget to attend the Auction sale of Boo&s ny Messrs. Eiiis &. Mau,is, every night. tSP’ Mr. J. H. Merry has crosse i over to No* 87 Broad Street and has just opened a large Stock of Fall and Winter Clothing. There are two points of commendation, as a clothing merchant, which we believe ail who have traded w th will accord to Mr. Merry ; that his clothing is always of good miterial aod manufacture, and that it is sold cheap. Shall We Have a Daily.' —Are there a thousand men in Gr-org a who are wip ing to pay one dollar fora daily paper du ring the sesiou of the Why the Governor’s M-\~s-’.gv, first appearing in the Daiy F Union , would be worth the money paid for the paper the whole of the Sr-ssion. All important bills as they come up, and the rno?t important acts will appear in our Daily, if we are suffi ciently encouraged to issue it. Are ther e no gentlemen in the Legislature who wisfi to spread their speech*-s before their eori_ stituents? Hiiv, for the iife of us, w e can tot understand the failure of the pub lic o support our enterprise. We do not expect to make a dime by it. It will be- if issued at all, f>r the convenience of pub ic. A fewd ys only remain to its fate. —MUledgevtile Federal Union, Walking Upon the Water—At Am sterdam there has a regatta of young men who walk the water in called podoschaphes. One of them, Mr. Ochsner, who gained the accomplished the fe it of walking op the Rhine from llotten dam to Cologne, where he arrived on the 2*2-1 of August, having started from Rotter dam oa the I6th. We fi and the above paragraph ia the pa pers. If true, ;t presents quite anew fea ture in aquatics. According to he state ment, th-winner of the prize walked 150 mile* in six days, or 25 miles each day,up on the surface of the water.— Baltimore Sun. The R chmond Enquirer says there is one square mile of bnd between Smyth and Washington counties, Ya., on the north fork of the Hoisioti river, which is worth more than the whole valuation of the city of New York. The salt rock, with n this mile, ranges from seventy to one hundred feet in thickness, which would yield a net ton, or forty bushels of salt to every solid vard it contain-, or over three thousand million- of bushels! which, when manu factured, is worth from forty to fifty cents per bushel. But, presum tig it to be worth twenty cents per bushel in the ground, and we have six hundred millions of debars! to which we must add two hundred and fif ? millions of tons of piaster wi’hin the same ?■ ace, worth in the ground about one dollar per t>n, making a total of eight hun dred and millions of do lars ! Von Humboldt has celebrated his ninetieth birhday An English cotrespon dent, writing from Berlin. says that ’'never did a conqueror receive congratulations from so many persons and such great dis tances, as the p si i y y iiad to carry on Tuesday morning to the well known house in th>” Oransienburger-strasse. Those who have been fortunate enough to enjoy a peep at the fifth volume of Kosmos, which is still under his hands, assert that neither in style nor contents does it. in the least, yield to the four volumes which preceded it.— Humboldt himself, is said to be of opinion that he will die next spring, just after hav i?ig completed the last of the task he has undertaken. But his friendsjwho observed him, speak differently, and are boid enough to predict that this time lie will prove to be altogether in error, and that a very differ ent celebration from that which he antici pates will next year take place in his house.’* DRUGS.
