THE CITY.
Sabbath School Celebration-
Saturday was a gala day for the childreo of ou r
city. At the boar of 0 o’clock, A. M.. all the
Methodist Schools—embracing Methodist School
No. 1, YVynntcn, Beailwood, Pierce Chapel,
Factory and Girard—and the Presbyterian Sab
bath School, convened at the Methodist Church.
The number present was large, one School
standing la the wle-the galleries and the lower part
©4 the Church being foil- After aV-eleomesong
and a lew remarks from the Superintendent of
Sabbath School No. 1, Master Tho.nas Grimes,
as the mouth-piece of this School, welcomed the
scholars present, in a most beautiful address, de
livered too in a style seldom by the most
accomplished orators It was responded to in an
appropriate manner by Master Edward Mitchell
of the Presbyterian School, Master John Stand
ford of the Girard sehool, Alastar Win. H. Young
ot Beailwood Master Henry Day of Pierce
Chapel, and Rev. W. G Coaner in behalf ot the
Factory. The speeches were all well received.
The procession then, accompanied by a band of
music, marched to Camp .Montgomery- It was the
moving of an army with banners ; numbering 850
in the procession ; and the bright faces reflected, as
with a mirror, the joyous emotions of the young
hearts. Arrived at Camp Montgomery, a prayer
was offered by Rev. J H DeVotie, when Hoo G E
Thomas, as the orator of the day, made a chaste,
beautiful and eloquent address.
The tables were loaded with everything gratify
ing to the palate and reflected credit upon the
Lady manager# who superintended it.
After dinner impromtu speeches ware delivered
by Messrs W. G. Conner, J. Berries .Oliver, and
George Thomas, which elicited applause. The
former of these gentlemen taking “Webster’s spel
ling book” for his text—the key to the Bible—a
subject which interested the children and which
he treated well.
The whole affa r passed off pleasantly and the
children with their rosettes of all colots bore them
as badges ot honor—proud of the distinction con
ferred.
An incident occurred worthy ot notice. As the
procession passed, two by two, the Minister of oue
of the Churches observed a sweet faced little girl,
dressed in a neat, but plain attire—the earnings
perhaps of a poor Mother—tripping along bare
footed as merrily as though unconscious of the
contrast she presented with ethers. The tender
heart of the minister was touched—it swelled his
bosom to think the girl at the risk of mortification
would thus take part in the celebration and grasp
ing his purse strings, he paid a tribute to charity
worthy the heart of a Christian.
To return, tills delightful day will long he re
rnenibered by the children, and when gray hairs
■.hail overtake them, they will looX back through
the vista of the past to it as one of the most pleas
ant incidents of their life. May it ever be a green
spot upon which mem *ry can look, inspiring them
to noble impnises and generous deeds, and fitting
them for a glorious immortality beyond the skies.
