FOR THE TIMES.
A Tribute of Affection to the Bereaved.
Sunday, Sept. 12th, 1858.
The following verses are addressed by a friend
of Columbus, to the bereaved family, upon the
death of T. G. Moffett:
Ah whatcan friendship’s feeble accents ‘say?
To soothe thy anguish on this sad, sad day,
When thou art called to lay thy first born low,
God give thee comfort!—God assuage thy woe.
Weep on thou mourner, and shed the sacred tear ;
So long pent up in agonizing fear, —
Lest the beloved one shouldstsee the trace,
Of hopeless anguish on his mother’s face.
Mother! that son, to whom thou wert so dear,
Said happy! happy! happy!—Oh words of
cheer,
Twas the last he breathed, to the loved on earth
Ere his spirit bright, hailed its heavenly birth,
Renewed, redeemed, freed from this eartly coil,
He gently winged his fligtli to heavens on soil,
Where hosts of angels swapt their harps in praise
To God the Eternal—the ancient one of days. ~
And now, midst Seraphs on yonder shore he stands
Doing the bidding, or waitings Gods commands,
So hie aa guardian, to the loved he left below,
Wrapt in the grief dyed mantle of untold woe.
His course on earth was short, unclouded, blest,
Each in affection felt, they loved him best,
Oh sorrowing mourners deem not thy loved one
dead
But still one family with Christ their head.
