We understand from an agent onjjthe Montgom
ery and West Point Railroad, that a negro, be
longing to Mr. Alexander of Montgomery, of the
firm of Alexander <fc Gimler, jumped off the ears
Friday night (Oct. 29) when the train was within
2U miles of Montgomery, and was instantly killed.
Her body was found on the track Sunday morning
when the cars passed.

COTTON.—The market for the past week has
been active, and prices have been well sustained.
Though there has been some little irregularity in
prices, sales have been quite heavy at 10% @1 Ic.
Prices for the last two days were not so stiff', yet
there was no quotable decline.
Saturday, the sales were heavy for the receipts
at 10%@10%c.
Receipts 925. Sales 3912.
Montgomery, Oct. 29.—COTTON.—OurJ river
is now navigable for large boats.“ The Eclipse
went off to-day with a cargo of cotton, at one dol
lar per bale freight to Mobile. The reduction in
freight caused cotton to advance to- day %c Wc
saw a list of 400 bales, Strict Middlings sell at 1 lc.
and 11c. offered for a list of 500 bales Strict Mid
dlings, and refused. We quote Middlings 10% to
11c.; Good Middlings 11%e.
New York, Oct. 30.—Sales of Cotton yester
day wore 1200 bales, with a quiet market. Sales
of Flour 11,000 bids., Southern $5@5,35. Wheat
firm, sales 30,000 bush., white $145. Corn firm,
sales 41,000 bush., mixed 71 cents. Coffee firm,
10,000 sacks sold, Java brought 13% @l4 cents.
Spirits of Turpentine was firm at52@53 cents.—
Rosin was steady, with sales of4ooo barrels. Rice
was quiet.

COTTON.—Tbc market was still poorly sup
plied to-day, and holders have asked full prices,
but purchasers have been found for about 0000
bales. The market has been firm, without any
quotable change, the Pcrsias accounts having pro
duced no observable effeot.

SEA Islands. —We have no new feature to re
port in long staple cottons. It is arriving very
slowly, and the stock oq hand is limited. We do
not hear of a single order in the city, and there are
consequently no purchaser, and we still remain
without a basis for quotations. It is hardly prob
able that a demand will exist before the middle of
next month. The receipts foot 13ft bags. None
exported.
Augusta,'Oct. 30tli. —Tlu*|New York, Charles
ton and Savannah Cotton Markets are quiet, .with
a declining tendency. The Mobile and New Or
leans Markets are firm.
