THE DAILY TIMES. THE CITY. Nch Advertisements. Our readers are referred to Law Card of Messrs. Johnson <fe Sloan in another column. Also to the dissolution of the old iirm of Wellborn, Johnsn A Sloan. It will be seen that Judge Wellborn de clines to take any more new cases in law. We invite attention to the advertisement of Mr. A. \elati, in to-day’s issue. Our friends in city or country, who want anything in the Confection ery lino will serve their own interest by giving him a call. His stove is well arranged and bis shelves are filled with excellent candies and all sorts of good things. Those interested will take notice that the Pews of the Baptist Church will be rented on Monday morning next at ten o'clock. * Mortuary. Our city Sexton, Mr Six, has furnished us a re port of the deaths in this city for the month of Oc tober. The aggregate interments are 23, of these 8 were colored, and half of the number were young children. This was the heaviest monthly mortal ity since February. Our city is remarkably healthy at this time—so say the physicians. Ark now ledgrmcnls. Wo have received from Mr. A. Velati specimens of Almond, Cable and Cocoanut Candy of his own manufacture. We have subjected them to gas tronomical criticism and pronounce them good.— lie has a fresh supply of his own handiwork al wnys for sale. Jlov. Sam. 1> Rice. — The Montgomery Mail learns that Chief Justice Sam. D* Rice, of that State, has declared his intention to resign his seat on the Supreme Bench, to take eflect early in Jan uary. This decision of Judge Rice has been made in opposition to the wishes of almost the entire Bar of Alabama, all of whom have the highest appreciation of his legal attainments, and his wortli as a man. The inadequacy of the salary to the service required, is said to be the cause of this determination on the part of Judge Rice. To serve the State at $.‘5,000, when his practice would bring him four times as much, is rather too much to require of the Judge’s patriotism, lie will re sume the practice of his profession in ’Montgome ry* m Memento. My son, be this thy simple plan : Serve God and love thy brother man ; Forget not in temptation’s hour, That sin lends sorrow double power; Count life a stage upon thy way, And follow conscience, come what may, Alike with heaven and earth sincere, With hand and brow and bosom clear, “Fear God, and know no other fear.” Tribute of Respect. City Light G-itards Armory, ) Oct. 28th, 1858. j Brethren in Arms : —Death has again, with its ruthless hand, invaded our ranks; leaving us to mourn tho loss of our friend and comrade, George Gvllen. But yesterday he moved among us in the strength of manhood and all the pride of life— to-day, it is only left for us to hope that the sod may rest lightly over his remains, lie united himself with this Company in its infancy—has ever been a valuable and faithful member, and warm companion ; he was ever ready, at tho tap of tho drum, to be where duty and the interest of the Company called. While his untimely death should be a warning to us, his attachment for this Company should en courage us to enlist for the war and die with our armor on. Peace be to his ashes. Be it there fore Resolved , That by the death of our brother, George Gullen, the City Light Guards have lost an efficient and useful member, a devoted friend, and a-boon companion. Resolved 2d, That we wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved 3d, That our sympathies and condo lence are enlisted in behalf of the relations and friends of our much beloved brother at his sudden and premature death. Resolved 4th, That these resolutions be spread on the minutes of our Company, and that they be published in the City papers—a copy furnished the relatives of our deceased brother. Privates T. W. HARBOUR COUNTY LANDS FOR SALE. HAVING purchased land in the West, I now oiler lor sale both my p ! antations, lying on the North Cowikee Creek. ‘Pile place on which I now reside, known as the Barna Ivey Plantation contains 2,475 acres, with a large proportion of fresh and Hammock land. Tin re are on the plan tation 1,400 acres cleared, and in a fine state of cultivation, thoroughly drained, with a large num ber of well located ditches. The dwelling is commodious, having 6 large rooms, neatly finish ed, and i9 bituated within the corporate limits o Glennville, convenient to the Colleges and Churches. ‘The out-houses are in good repair and sufficient for the accommodation of 100 negroes. On th s place, are two new gin houses, one of which is propelled by water power, to which is attached a grist mill, all in good order. Lying broadside this place is my other planta tion, recently owned by Col. W. H* Owens, con taining 9UI acres. The dwelling, out-houses, gin house and screw are all new and well finished, and equally convenient to Glennville. Being de termined to sell, 1 would not object to dividing my lands to suit purchasers. To those acquainted with these lauds 1 need not say more—to those at a distance, 1 would say that they cannot be ex celled in point of health or productiveness in east Alabama. Glennville is noted for the morality, intelligence and refinement of its citizens. It is situated 12 miles from the Mobile and Girard Railroad, 6 miles from.Jernigao, a steamboat landing on the Cliattahoochie river, and 16 miles from Eulaula, to which point the South-Western Railroad of Georgia will soon be completed. For further par ticulars, address me at Glennville, Alabama. P.S. As 1 am axioufto carry out my plans west I propose if 1 can find a purchaser lor ihe above named lands, to let them go at the low price ot twelve dollars and a half per acre, cash. And if not sold before Saturday the twentieth of November next, 1 will have them divided into two or more tracts by a.survey, and oiler them on that day at public outcry to the highest bidder. Land buyers might do well to examine the lands before buying elsewhere. H. BASS.
