THE DAILY TIMES. THE CITY. A Noise Tor Nothing, A considerable excitement was caused in our city yesterday by the report that Yellow Jack, like Picayune Butler, had como to town. It was said that one death had occurred from that disease in Battle row, and several new cases had made their appearance. Knowing that such reports are magnified with marvellous facility, we started out upon a search for the truth. We ascertained from inquiry of several of our most reliable and intelli gent physicians, that a lady, whose name wc for get, had died in that part of the city alluded to, and, in all probability her disease was yellow fe ver. That she had recently come from Savannah, and the presumption was, of course, necessary that she contracted the disease in the latter place. They also gave it as their opinion, that no other case of yellow fever has since appeared, and, fur thermore, that it is impossible for any other ease to appear, unless, like the first, it he imported.— We hope that this opinion from those who are cer tainly best informed on the subject, will allay all apprehension. In the absence even of such assu rance we have the satisfaction to believe that the freeze last night has swept the last vestige of this hurnau foe from the face of the earth. New Advertisements. The Gokdy Grape.—Those of our readers who feel interested in the culture of Grapes, and who desire to supply themselves with an excellent ac climated species of this delightful fruit, aro re ferred to the advertisement of Messrs. Ellis <fc Mathis in another column. The recommenda tion of the. above variety, by many of our citizens which is therein given, is a sufficient guarantee of its value and excellence. All our friends who are minus a place to sleep these cold nights, are informed that Mr. J. 11. Jikes, 30 Broad street, has a fine assortment of matresses on band. Buy one and lie easy. Any one desirous of buying a good cook, wash er and ironer, can hear of one by applying to Ellis A Mathis. Those of our readers interested in the purchase and shipment of western produce, are referred fo the card of Messrs. Sayre & White, Cincinnati Ohio. An Interesting Visit. | Ever since the noble project was conceived of securing Mount Vernon to the whole country, as a mecca for all true lovers of liberty and patriot ism, no one has labored more zealously than Madame Le Vert to bring about a successful con summation of the plan, One of the very first to advocate the purchase of a spot hallowed by so many precious memories, she not only succeeded in obtaining liberal encouragement from others, but also contributed most substantially to the com mon fuud. In view of those facts, we must regard the visit to Mount Vernon which she yesterday made as peculiarly interesting and suggestive. Her feel ings must have been indeed lofty and gratifying as she gazed with moistened eyes at the resting place of Washington, ami wandered through the shades and sat under the roof which had sheltered him. We imagine that the human heart cannot bo fillod with emotions more pleasurablo than those which must have been experienced by this noble lady. Nor was there wanting a tribute to her patriotic conduct. The captain of the boat on which she took passage to Mount Vernon steadfastly refused to receive the least compensation; also taking oc casion to express his admiration of the manner in which she had labored in so noble a cause. Madame Lo Vert was also escorted through the whole house by the family now residing at Mount Vernon, and was thus atforded an opportu nity of seeing many relics of Washington never shown to ordinary visitors. She describes her treatment while in the house as gratifying in the extreme. Madame Lc Vert leaves us this evening. May she long be spared to us, and be permitted to con tinue her efforts towards the purchase of Mount Vernon.— Washington States. Military Training. The advantages of military training in schools, on the score of health and exercise, as well as the cultivation of a martial spirit, is beginning to be appreciated in other countries as well as our own. It is stated by late English papers, that private military schools are not only becoming fashiona ble, in which an excellent education is also given, including a knowledge of mathematics and the chief modern languages, but the custom or rather in novation is already so far refined upon, that a private “Cavalry College’’ has been established 1 on an extensive scale, for young gentlemen, at Richmond, near London, and that it was patron ized by Field Marshal Viscount Combermere, and many of the highest officers of the British army. And here the students may be prepared for the national service, being not only thoroughly in structed in fencing, aud ell military cxcrcies, but particularly in horse riding. A leading feature introduced is discipline, all being summoned to parade by trumpet call, and then hours and even minutes are measured by allotment to study or martial duties. The disciplined enforced is said to mean: obedience to orders, punctuality, self denial, temperance, and general good conduct; — and in combining their military duties with a re fined, liberal aud elevating education, great pains are taken in the establishment to render the pupils—mostly candidates for the army—“sol diers in spirit, good horsemen, gentlemen, and Christians.” In France and Prussia seminaries of this kind have acquired great fame. The in creasing infusion of the military element in our own schools, is a matter of congratulation, supply ing. as it does, healthful exercise to those who so ! much require it, aud educating competent officers | for our voluuteer soldiers, on whom the couutr}’ j depends for protection against the mercenary i hordes of Europe.— Richmond (I’d.)
