THE DAILY TIMES. THE CITY. Divine Service. Rev. J. H. DeVotie will conduct Divine Ser vice in the Baptist Church, this day, at 10% o’clock A. M. We learn, also, that service will he held in the Churches of the several other denominations in this city, at the same hour. The River. The rain which fell in the early part of the week has swollen the Chattahoochee to a boating point, though without another ahoiocr, it cannot remain long in that condition. The highest point of the present rise has already been reached. We learn that the Stokes, Capt. LT Woodruff, will leave the wharf, this morning, for Apalachicola with a full cargo of freight. New Advertisements. Our readers aro referred to partnership notice of Messrs. Acee <fc Iverson, in another column, by which it will be seen that they propose to carry on the drug business, in all its branches, at the old stand of Clarke & Iverson. These gentlemen are deserving young men, and will use every ef fort to fulfil their pledges to the public. Pianos needing tuning or repair ing, are referred to the advertisement of Mr. 0. B. Kice in to-day’s paper. Gambling in Washington. The Washington correspondent of the Philadel phia North American, in his letter of the 12th in stant, referring to an auction at the well known gambling house of a man named Pendleton, lately deceased, remarks : These gambling resorts have increased fearfully at Washington in the last ten years, and it is no torious that they have done more to demoralize legislation than all the other debasing and cor rupting influences which have been brought to bear upon weak, venal or needy members of Con gress. I was deeply impressed by the silent but eloquent witnesses of this fact, when the drawers of Pendleton’s desk were opened, yesterday, and numerous bills, relating to schemes before Con gress, were exposed to public view. The misery, and wretchedness, and degradation inflicted upon men and families by these hells are appalling, and even the imperfect disclosures which have reach ed me, accidentally, exhibit a state of morals in Congress which would astonish the country if ex posed. Some of these gamblers, and others who are concerned as capitalists with them, are openly employed as lobby agents, from their supposed ability to control votes through obligations incur red by members ; and the fact is one of common town talk, that their tables are the resort of a large class of such voters, in preference to the hotels.— This thing has assumed that serious shape when publicity becomes a duty; for strange as it may seem, the influence has so ramified that it w r as fear ed, at one time, in the early stages of the Kansas struggle, last session, when the House was nearly equally divided, that the scale would be turned by a turn of the screw upon particular members who were known to be in the power of the gamblers.— It may well be asked where are we drifting, when such things can be, and go unrebuked ? the city of Richmond, Va., there are 35 ministers who possess libraries numbering 10,500 volumes; 73 physicians, whose libraries contain 22,900 volumes, and 82 lawyers with 80,000 vol umes on their own shelves. The estimated in come of the professional men is $394,450 per an num. DAILY COMMERCIAL RECORD. COTTON—The market opened with a very brisk speculative demand, which was checked by the high rates asked by holders, and we hear of sales only of 310 bales, at 10 to 10%, for low to good middling, being a further advance on yester day’s prices. Receipts for the day 888 bales. Pork Market. The Cincinnati Price Current alludes to the singular fact, that the market is as much excited as it has usually been at a much later period in the season, and prices advanced 50 cents per cwt. and closed firm at $G 25 per hundred lbs. net for delivery during the month. That paper discred its the short crop reports from the west, and re gards the evidence in favor of a good supply of hogs better than last year. The rates quoted above may therefore be regarded as forced opera tions, for effect, and we may regard the market yet unsettled. In Chattanooga the porkeries were paying 4 cents gross, during last week. The Ashvilie(N. C.) News of the 18th, says there are now several droves on the river ‘‘drag ging their greasy proportions to market.” The price generally asked is jtbout six and a half cents, gross. THE undersigned announces to the citizens of Co lumbus, and in fact to all Georgia, that he is now taking Pictures in as good style as they can be taken in the “Empire State,” either by & foreign or native ar tist. His prices range from that much despised sum— fitly cents to ten dollars. And although he does not pretend to say that he is the best artist in the United States, yet he fears not the result of a romnarison with those whose reputation is bolstered up by long adver tisements and puffs of their own manufacture. He prefers that ladies and gentlemen should judge for themselves. And if those in want of a good Picture will call and give him a trial, he will convince them that he fully understands the modus operondi of picture taking. All he wants is a fair and impartial trial, and he fears no competition from any quarter.
