an Marcus is still offering a choice lot of fam
lv groceries and the luxuries of the season, at his
stand on ‘Broad street. Persons in want of
something to eat, will find at his store almost ev
erything to gratify the taste, from a smoked
beef-tongue up to fhe rarest dainty.
George D. I‘rextice and his Lectures.— By
a letter just received from that distinguished Geor
gia orator. A. H. H. Dawson, Esq., of Savannah,
we learn the distinguished Kentuckian named
above, will lecture in Mobile on the 10th inst. He
will pass through this city and probably be here
in time to lecture —if our people trie ftiift f on the
16 th inst. He delivers two lectures : one on the
1 1'ndeucies oj J > artics ; the other on American
States mans hip. Either or both, he will consent
to deliver here; but if it is desired that he should
do so, our citizens, or a committee thereof, must
address him immediately at Mobile, apprising
him of the fact. This is necessary, as Mr". Pren
tice ma_y arrange his engagements for cities to the
East and North of us.
On some points, we differ politically very widely
with Mr. Prentice, but we greatly admire his ge
nius and we do hope that someone will at once
take the necessary steps to secure the delivery
here of one or both of his lectures. —Montgomery
Mail.
Missionaries to Utah. —The Philadelphia
North American thinks the present a favorable
time to send missionaries to Utah, to Christionize
the Mormons. The Saints will not be likely to re
gard this proposition as very complimentary’ to
their professed sanctity. That paper says :
“Here is an admirable opportunity for benevo
lence of any kind to exercise itself.’ Good men,
and—better still—good and true women, who are
prepared to endure, meekly and courageously,
hardships, toil, danger, and, perhaps, insult and
ingratitude—women of the same temper as Flor
ence Nightingale—will find the Mormon country
just the place for them. They must be prepared
to suffer and work, unknown and unrewarded of
men ; but still enjoying the secret consciousness
of doing good. They w ill find thousands of un
happy sisters, and thousands of childrem almost
uneared for : thousands of poor, ignorant and dis
tressed people, whom they may teach to call them
blessed. With such protection as the federal au
thorities will now, we trust, afford in Salt Lake
City, we believe that benevolent and Christian ef
fort may, with safety, he made amongst the Mor
mons, and with the happiest results.”
Petersburg Convention.— Petersburg, Va.,
Dec. 4.—The democratic Convention has nomina
ted the Hon. John Letcher, as a candidate for
Governor. He was subsequently nominated by a
unanimous vote. It is said that Mr. Letcher’s
most bitter opponents concede that he will be elec
ted by 17 or 18,000 majority.
J. R. Tucker was nominated as the candidate
for Attorney General.
The delegates are discussing the claims of the
caniddates for Lieutenant Governor.
The Convention w ill, in all probability, adjourn
to-night.
DAILY COMMERCIAL RECOUP
The Cotton Wants of China. —The London
Economist estimates that with free commercial
intercourse under the late treaty with China, the
four hundred millions of Chinese alone, will re
quire the whole cotton crop of the United States
to supply their wants. To say the least, the op
ening of this new market will add greatly to the
cotton power, and materially to the value of the
cotton lands of the South and to the productive
labor required to raise it.
COTTON. —Dec S. The market opened this
morning very languidly, owing to a rumor of un
favorable accounts from the west. This caused a
very general disposition to sell, and a few hundred
bales were taken at J 4 off from yesterdays prices.
Later in the day, however, confidence became re
stored, and prices recovered nearly all that was
lost in the morning, with rather heavy sales,
which amounted to 1096. Receipts 964.
Charleston, Dec 6.
COTTON —Sales of cotton to-day 3300 bales.
The market was firm.
New York, Dec. 7.
COTTON—SaIes of cotton 500 bales. The
market is unsettled.. Middling Uplands 11 7-16
@ll 9-16 c.
The Flour trade was dull, with sales of 9,500
bbls.: Ohio $5 50; and Southern $5 @ $5 40.
Wheat dull, and quotations nominal. Corn
buoyant; sales 50,000 bush.; mixed qualities had
slightly advanced, and quoted at 76@77c; White
unchanged, and old quoted at 86, and new Yel
low at 75 cents. Spirits of Turpentine dull, at
@4S cents.
Montgomery, December 7th, 1858.
COTTON—The market was languid to-day
no demand from shippers. Sales are confined to
the streets—prices arc nominal.

taking Pictures in as good style a® they can be taken
in the “Empire State,” either by a foragn or naftre ar
tist. His prices range from that much despised sum—
fifty cents to ten dollars. And although he does not
pretend to say that he is the best artist m the l uited
States, yet he fears not the result of a cotuoartson with
those whose reputation is bolstered up by long adver
tisements and puffs of their own manufacture. He
prefers that ladies and gentlemen should judge for
themselves And if those in want of a good Picture
will call and give him a trial, he will convince them
that he fully understands the ‘modus operanui of picture
taking. Ail he wants is a fair and impartial trial, and
he fears no competition from any quarter.

have on hand in New York, as well as Philadelphia,
perhaps the largest stock of fine Kye Whiskies in the

STATE OF THE LIVER. .
Such as Indigestion, Acidity of the Stomach. Colicky
Pains, Heartburn, Loss of Appetite, Despondency,Cos
tivenes, Blind and Bleeding Piles. In all Nervous,
Rheumatic and Neuralgic Affections, il has in numer
ous instances proved highly beneficial, and in others ef
fected a decided cure.
This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared on
strictly scientific principles, after the manner ol’ the
celebrated Holland Professor, Bcerliave. Because of
its great success in most ol the European -States, its In
troduction into the United States was intended more
especially for those of our fatherland scattered here
and there over the face of this mighty country. Meet
ing with great success among them. I riow offer it to
the American public, knowing that its truly w onderful
medicinal powers must be acknowledged.
It is particularly recommended to those person*
whose constitutions may have been impaired by the
continuous use of ardent spirits, or other forms of dis
sipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds its
way directly to the Veut of life, thrilling ami quickening
every nerve, raising up the drooping spirit, and in fact
infusing new health and vigor in Ihe system.
NOTICE. —Whoever expects to find this a beverage
will be disappointed; but to the sick, weak, and low
spirited, it will prove a grateful aromatic cordial, pos
sessed of singular remedial properties.
CAUTION!
The great popularity oftliis delightful aroma has in
duced many imitations, which the public should guard
against purchasing. Be not persuaded to buy anything
else until vou have given Bcerhave’s Holland Bitters a
fair trial. One bottle will convince you how infinitely
superior it is to ail these imitations.
