Tennessee via. Opelika five hundred turkeys—all

East Alabama College,—ltev. Wm. J. Sasnett, D. D.
We are pleased to learn that the Alabama Col
lege will soon be completed, both as to building
and endowment. The College building is said to
be one of the most beautiful and imposing struc
tures of the kind in the Union. The endowment
fund is to be about one hundred thousand dollars,
about seventy-five thousand of which is already
received. This College and endowment altogeth
er. is a noble scheme, which, when completed, will
remain an enduring monument to the noble and
generous peoplo who are engaged in the enter
prise
The Trustees, at a recent meeting, unanimous
ly elected Dr. Wm. J. Sasnett, now President of
La Grange College, as the President of the Ala
baba College. In this selection, they have dis
played great wisdom and judgment. Dr. Sasnett
enjoys a wide and brilliant reputation in the world
of letters and the cause of education. He i3 yet
compatively a young man, in the prime of life,
and in the vigor of manhood. Ilis future, if he
lives, must be brighter than his past has been.—
We may confidently assert, then, that his present
position and his rising fame, will give great char
acter and position to the promising Institution to
which he has been called.
Theatrical—Mr. Crisp
As this gentleman is soon to appear with his
Theatrical company upon our boards, it may be
gratifying to his many friends in this city to learn
that success is still his companion and their an
ticipations of pleasure from his prominent visit
cannot well be too exalted. The Memphis Ava
lanche of the 13th insl., has the following:
The Gaiety.
Notwithstanding the adverse circumstances,
the elements contending pitilessly, making the
streets almost impassable, the talented and beau
tiful Miss Avonia Jones has had during her en
gagement the most brilliant success. It is a mat
ter of exceeding wonderment and surprise to all
admirers of the Drama, knowing the difficulties
to bo overcome and surmounted to the attainment
of success, that one so young as Miss Jones should
have bocomo so proficient, so perfect, so faultless
in the delineation of character, and to such au ex
tent as to disarm criticism. Her artistic merit is
commensurate to her exalted private worth, which
is above all praise. She wins, as she desorvos to
win, the admiration, the love, the respect of all
classes of peoplo, wherever she goes. Her queen
ly mien, her noble bearing, her splendid and mag
nificent attitude, together with as sweet notes as
ever fell from syren, or “bird of heavenly plum
age fair,” never fails to produce the most startling
applause. Iler grace, superadded to her other
attractions, is perfectly swaniiko, and well may
she bo yclept, in all the beautiful galaxy, “the
bright particular star” whose radiance sheds n
halo around each character she assumes, and
brings to light and prominence of the author,
new beauties swift mantling to the view. Could
the author have seen Miss Jones n “Evadne,”
last evening, his pride w ould have been exalted
and his egotism becom inflated. Beautiful im
personation, as she grasped the statue and deliv
ered her address, her attitude assumed sublimity,
as the long continued and protracted applause
eloariy indicated. We predict for her a series of
triumphs, should she continue improving as she
has, second to none, who have ever trod the Amer
ican boards. Such artistes add dignity to the
profession, and divest it of all the objections so
currently harped upon against the stage. May
her future course and success be as brilliant as
her merits deserve, and should such a consum
mation occur, she will stand peerless and alone in
her glory.
Mr. Crisp, ns Colonna, needs no commenda
tion. He has lost none of his excellencies, and
notwithstanding his great experience and profic
iency in the profession he has so long and so em
inently followed—his merits and attractions seem
to increase, his star is in the ascendancy, and may
it never wane, lln deserves the thanks and grat
itude of the Memphis people for the untiring
efforts he has made and is making to cater to their
tastes. The stock company are improving rapid
ly, and none more so than the pretty and piquant
Miss Carrie Lewis. Mrs. Laws is always an fait,
and performs her role of character admirably.
Wo understand “Sybil” will bo reproduced next
Friday night, on which occasion Miss Avonia
Jones takes her benefit. Let it be one worthy ot
its fair recipient. Make it such an one as will
create in Miss Jones’ memory, a green spot, nnd
encircle Memphis with undying memories, iu her
bright mind’s casket of jewels.

PICTURE GALLERY IN FULL BLAST.
IMIE undersigned announces to the citizens of Cn
ininhus. and in fact to al 1 Georgia, that he is now
taking Pictures in as good style as they can lie taken
in the “Umpire State,” either by a foreign or notice ar
tist. His prices range from that much despised sum—
fifty cents to ten dollars. And although lie docs not
pretend to say that he is the bc.it artist in the United
States, yet he fears not the result of a coinoarison with
those whose reputation is bolstered up by long adver
tisements and puffs of their own manufacture, lie
prefers that ladies and gentlemen should judge for
themselves. And if those in want of a good Picture
will call and give him a trial,‘lie will convince them
that he fully understands the modus operandi of picture
taking. All he wants is a fair and impartial trial, and
he fears no competition from any quarter.

THIS CJCLKBRATKD HOLLAND REMEDY FOR
DISEASE OF THE KIDNEYS
LIVER COMPLAINT,
WEAKNESS OF ANT KIND, I
FEVER AND AGUE.
And the various affections consequent upon a diseased
STATE OF THE LIVER.
Such as Indigestion, Acidity of the Stomach, Colicky
Pains, Heartburn, Loss of Appetite, Despondency,Cos
tiveneß. Blind and Bleeding Piles. In all Nervous,
Rheumatic and Neuralgic Affections, it has in numer
ous instances proved highly beneficial, and in others ef
fected a decided cure.
Tilts is a purely vegetable compound, prepared on
strictly scientific, principles, after the manner of Un
celebrated Holland Professor, Boerhave. Because ot
its great success in most of the European States, its in
troduction into the United States was intended more
especially for those of our fatherland scattered here
and there over the face of this mighty country. Meet
ing with great success among them, I now offer it to
the American public, knowing that its truly w onderful
medicinal powers must be acknowledged.
It is particularly recommended to those person*
whose constitutions may huve been impaired by the
continuous use of ardent spirits, or other forms of dis
sipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds its
way directly to the seat of life, thrilling and quickening
every nerve, raising tip the drooping spirit, and in fact
infusing new health and vigor in the system.
NOTlCE.—Whoever experts to find this a beverage
will be disappointed; but to the sick, weak, and low
spirited, it will prove a grateful aromatic cordial, pos
sessed of singular remedial properties.
CAUTION!
The great popularity of this delightful aroma has in
duced many imitations, which the public should guard
against purchasing. Be not persuaded to buy anything
else until you have given 80-rhave’s Holland Bitters a
fair trial. One bottle will convince you how infinitely
superior it is to all these imitations.
Hold at #1 per bottle, or six bottles for #5, by the
