THE DAILY TIMES. THE CITY. Backley’s Opera Troupe. ThisTr; up; will viat Columbus Monday and Tuesday nights. They are said to excell any that has ever heretofore visited the South. In Mont gomery they are peforming to jammed houses, and the dress-circles are packed with ladies half an hour before the appointed time. Indeed, they have created a great excitement in that city, and the music is spoken of as being exquisite. See their advertisement in another column. Correspondents. We have received a communication signed ‘'Wili. Warwick,” which will be published next week. John W A. Sanford Esq. We notice the arrival of this gentleman in our city and gladly welcome him. lie is a resident of Montgomery and though young, he has taken a high position in the democratic ranks and gal lantly bore the Democratic; standard as Elector iu the last campaign. Hon. John Forsyth The appointment of Hon. John Forsyth as Min ister to Mexico by Mr. Pearce, was hailed with joy by the democracy of Alabama and Georgia, ile has sustained himself and the honor of his country in that position and we trust the administration will not so far forget his past ser vices and his present position in the democratic ranks to appoint another in his stead without just and satisfactory reasons. We have alluded to this subject heretofore, and will allude to it again at the proper time. We merely designed these remarks as a heading to the following extract of a Washington letter to a New Orleans paper : “A novel and somewhat embarrassing question seems likely to arise here in connection with the’ Mexican Mission. The President, in his message, refers to Mr. Forsyth as “our late Minister to Mexico.” Mr. Forsyth’s friends contend that he has not been removed; that he has brought his legation home because ordered to withdraw it al together from Mexico : that he is still attached to said Legation as Minister; and that no now Minis ter can be appointed unless ho resigns, or is re- j moved. It is not at all probable that the Presi dent will consent to Mr. F.’s return to Mexico, nor is it likely that he will resign, as he believes he can make a satisfactory treaty with Mexico, and is desirous of thus signalizing his mission be fore retiring from it. The Administration has received private infor mation from Mexico, indicating the probability that Gen. -Robles will soon be at the head of af fairs there, and suggest ing that the Government of the United States await rapidly approaching events before compromising itself by recognizing the Juarez Government. The probabilities, nev ertheless, are that Senor Mata will soon be receiv ed, provided he brings with him full powers from Juarez to make a treaty with the United States here at Washington. In such a case there will boa necessity for hastening an American repre- ■ sentative to Mexico.” “Niggardly.” —Our article under the above caption, published on the 1 Ltk instant, seems to have elicited considcraele attention. We are glad of it. Our design is accomplished. It shows the interest in the public mind on the subject. The Columbus “Times” in its issue of the 18th, is in clined to take us to task for our remarks, but when our eotomporary sees our comments in our last issue, on the “Educational Dill” passed by < the Legislature, he will be better satisfied with us, and set ns right before his readers. We were in dignant at the prov isions of the first Bill, as wo understood them, and which were commented on j under the head “Niggardly ;” but the Bill finally , carried is much more liberal than we expected, j and hence commends itself to our favor. —Atlanta j American. A Juror Correcting a Judge. —A Judge in Cincinnati last week had just charged the jury iu a very important case, when, to the great aston ishment of all present, a professional juror, who happened to be on, arose from his scat and begged to call the attention of his honor to a slight mis take he had made in his charge, and actually quo ted authorities to sustain his opinion. Upon re ferring to his citations, it was found, to the no small amusement of the spectators, that the jury man was right and his honor was wrong, where upon, with all due gravity he informed the bench ! that he knew he was correct, as he had been charg ed at least forty times on the same point in the j ast four months, and couldn’t be mistaken. ‘. v Sgt-A newspaper editor, concluding a discus- | on, says: This brings to memory a sleepy gentleman, who ■ took leave of a discussion about the authorship of a now novel, and when he had finished his nap 1 the conversation had changed to an earthquake, just happened. With a half concealed yawn, he asked innocently, “Who is the author of that t” DAILY COMMERCIAL RECORD. In all Nervous, Rheumatic and Neuralgic Affections, it has in numtri ouh instances proved highly beneficial, and in others ef< fected a decided cure. This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared on strictly scientific principles, after the manner of thd celebrated Holland Professor, Bierhave. Because o|, its great success in most of the European States, its in troduction into the United States was intended more especially for those of our fatherland scattered here and there over the face of this mighty country. Meet ing with great success among them, I now offer it te the American public, knowing that its truly wonderful medicinal powers must be acknowledged. It is particularly recommended to those person* whose constitutions may have been impaired by the continuous use of ardent spirits, or other forms of dis sipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds itf way directly to the scat ot life, thrilling and quickening every nerve, raising up the drooping spirit, and in fact infusing new healtli and vigor in the system. NOTlCE.—Whoever expects to rind this a beverage will be disappointed; but to the sick, weak, and low spirited, it w ill prove a grateful aromatic cordial, pos sessed of singular remedial properties. CAUTIO A / The great popularity of this delightful aroma haa in duced many imitations, which the public should guard .against purchasing. Be not persuaded to buy anything else until you have given Brerhave’s Holland Bitters a fair trial. One bottle will convince you how infinitely superior it is to all these imitations.
