THE daily times. THE CITY. Xew Advertisements. Our readers will perceive, from an advertise ment in another column, that Mr. J. W. Brooks, of the firm of Brooks & Chapman, is offering for sale several valuable negroes. persons interested in the Muscogee Buiding & Loan Association, are notified that the o2d in stalment is due, and expected to be paid at the Treasurer's office tLis evening. - The members of the various fire companies of the city, are requested to meet at the room of y'o. h on Monday night :!d instant, at 7 o’clock, fr the purpose of electing general officers*of the Fire Department for the ensuing year. Mr. James MePhillips, 140 Broad Street, is a< rain before the public with a choice bill of fare in the way of Fall and Winter Dry Goods. Our lady readers and friends arc respectfully invited to give him a call, before the grand rush to his establishment sets in.and when you once call, you will no doubt he suited in goods and price. New Year Visits—Huns. This is a season of the year which is delightful for more reasons than one. The advent of a New Year brings to you visitors whom you welcome gladly. They present you with a piece of fool cap full of figures—the account for the year— which if received agreeably, they bow and eurtesy out of your house the best humored fellows in the world, but if the response is given, “call again,” they leave with a look, plainly saying, “To avoid all proceedings unpleasant, I beg you to pay what is due ; If you do, you'll oblige me at present, If you don’t, then I’ll oblige yon.” Let all, then, lake the hint and square up “little hills;” especially the printer’*. What say you kind readers ? The Duelling Mania.— lt is perhaps ques tionable whether the barbarous practice of duel ling is looked upon with more or less favor at the North now, than it was at an earlier period. We hare been aeeustomed to regard the public senti ment of the Northern States as adverse to that ‘•code of honor” which requires two men to stand up and deliberately expose lives, valuable, if not to themselves, at least to their families, and possi bly to society, and to seek as a cover to wounded pride, or a remedy for real or supposed insults, the blood of those against whom they have no malice, or at least none which cannot be wiped out by other means, quite as easily as by the sacrifice of the life of one or both of the parties. We are beginning to doubt whether we have not been mistaken in our cstinltoe of Northern senti ment on this question. Nett long ago a member of Congress from Massachusetts, otherwise not distinguished, gained brilliant laurels, and render ed himself immensely popular throughout New England, by the mere bravado of accepting a challenge to fight a duel, naming the ground in a foreign country, where he knew his antagonist would not follow him. Hud lie actually shot the other party, the peace loving people of the North would probably have insisted on making him President of the United States. As it is, that display ol “pluck” has doubtless secured him a feat in Congress for a long period, it is to be hoped indeed until lie arrives at years of discretion.— Journal oj Commerce. British Barbarity. —The London Times pub lishes a proclamation issued by Lord Clyde on his commencing the campaign in Oudc, announcing that when there is no resistance no plundering will be allowed, but wherever there is resistance by even a single shot tired against the troops, the inhabitants must expect to incur the fate they have brought upon themselves. Their houses will | lie burnt and their villages plundered. The Committee on Territories. —The remov al of Mr. Douglas from the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Territories, says the (Eufau la) Spirit of the South, was an act’ of justice that we scarcely expected the majority of that body in view of recent demonstrations, would have the nerve to perform. The Southern Senators who opposed so salutary and necessary a move, did themselves no credit by the effort to keep at the heal of that important committee, a man who openly avows the right of a territorial legislature by its puny enactments, to nullify the protection which the constitution of the United States ex tends to the peculiar institution of their section. Do these gentlemen mean to endorse this mon strous absurdity of squatter sovereignty, or not approving, are they yet willing to tolerate a doc ’ trine which Mr. Calhoun denounced as worse than theWilmot Proviso, for the sake of the harmony of the party ? We are glad to see that neither of the Senators from Alabama is included in the list of those who turned their backs upon the adminis tration to extend the hand of friendship to the anti-Lecomptou co-adjutor of Greeley and Se ward. Rainy Weather.—The “colored brcdren” who have crowded our city during the holidays thick as “autumn leaves’’ have had an admirable time to “slosh round” as the weather has been decidedly falling since Saturday. Up to this time we have had an unusually mild winter: and un less the hoary old gentleman makes his appear ance soon, his dominions will be invaded by the gentle usurper, Spring. r Ajiericcs. In all Nervous, Rheumatic arid Neuralgic Affections, it lias in numer ous instances proved highly beneficial, and in others ef fected a decided cure. This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared on strictly scientific principles, after the manner of 1)m celebrated Holland Professor, Brerhave. Because of its great success in most of the European States, its in troduction into the United States was intended more especially for those of our fatherland scattered here and there over the face of this mighty country. Meet ing with great success among them, I now offer it to the American public, knowing that its truly wonderful medicinal powers must, be acknowledged. It is particularly recommended to those persons whose constitutions may have been impaired by the continuous use of ardent spirits, orother forms of dis sipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds its way directly to the seat of life, thrilling and quickening every nerve, raising up the drooping spirit, and in fact infusing new health and vigor in the system. NOTlCE.—Whoever expects to find this a beverage will he disappointed; but to the sick, weak, and low spirited, it w ill prove a grateful aromatic cordial, pos sessed of singular remedial properties. CAUTION! The great popularity of this delightful aroma lias in duced many imitations, which the public should guard against purchasing. Be not persuaded to buy angling else until you have given 80-rhave’s Holland Bitters a fair trial. One bottle will convince you how infinitely superior it is to all these imitations.
