Alarm of Fire.
There was an alarm of lire yesterday in the
forenoon. The Fire Companies were out and as
certained that it originated in the .Jail between
the walls. It was not the work of an incendiary,
but an accident. The walls having become heat
ed from the chimney.
By reference to the proceedings of a meeting
of the Directors of the Columbus and Hamilton
r&'lroad, hold in this place last Saturday, it will
ba Seen that Mr. L. P. Grant bus been elected
Chief Engineer, ami Mr. Jessee J IcLendon, Sec

OBIT l ARY,
Died, of Pneumonia, on the 15th Jannary,
George Bowie Wardlaw. He was born Dec.
18th, 1797, in Albebille District, South Carolina
—emigrated to Georgia at an early age—was
married to his amiable, now grief stricken con
tort, Maria Ross, September 16th 1824, and re
moved from Macon to Fort Gaines in November,
1839.
Without any pretension, either from partial
friends or affectionate relations, to class him a
mongst the distinguished dead of Georgia,
truly deserves a place amongst the larger and not
less noble band of uuhistorieal patriots and pion
eers whose memories mingle with many events
of rich interest in her history, lie lived and ac
ted through the stirring scene of the Western and
Southwestern settlements —often in the faithful
dis barge of public trusts; and at all times in
private or public, in youth or in age, in adversity
or prosperity—an intelligent and enterprising
citizeu of his adopted land. Though he had
nearly reached the psalmist limit, whenever his
county or town was to be protected, his eye would
kindle with the lire and his frame bound with the
elactioity of youth to aid in the good work. It
was thus we did not think or speak of him as an
old geutleman —for too often was ho among us
with spirit ardent and alive, and hands ready for
progress. No member of the community was
more unremitting in his exertions in obtaining
subscriptions to extend the South Western Rail
Road t> this place; no one more self sacrificing
and ready to promote the interests of our rising
town; to award me-rit to whom it was due, to op
pose wrong and injustice, ami to stimulate a true
and worthy county pride. There was a law
a nongst the Saxons that the slayer should pay
into the public treasury vi hatever the shin was
worth. This belonged to a barbarous notan en
lightened age. Men are prized now not by the
gold they own but by the good they do in all the
relations, .private and public, they bear in lite.
Measured by this estimate, aud not by the vile
one of the Saxon, George B. Wardlaw as hus
band, father, friend, master, citizen, an official ot
the county, a lover of moral, intellectual, as well
as of religious progress, bears a memory full ot
riches. They remain for those who knew him to
emulate him in these attractive graces. They
shine forth from the gloom of the tomb, and so
hallow his last resting place, we cannot, if wo
would, remember his faults With a worthy wife
—the charm of his earlier and the solace of his
declining years —and several daughters and grand
children surviving him, this entire community
mingles its sympathies—with the humble trust
that their loss is his gain. He sleeps on the
bank of our own loved Chattahoochee. As its
waters go singing by his grave to the ocean, so
may our thoughts, hopefully and cheerfully, fol
low his genial spirit to eternity.
A FRIEND.
Ayer’s American Almanac for 1800 is now j
ready for delivery gratis to agents.
The agents are happy to supply all that call for
them. Every family should have and keep this |
book. It is worth having. Comprising much
general information of great value, it gives the
best instruction for the cure of prevalent com
plaints, that we can get any where. It anecdotes
alone are worth a bushel of wheat, and its med
ical advice is sometimes worth to the sick, the
wheat’s weight in gold. Many of the medical al
manacs are trash, but this is solid metal. Its
calculations are made purposely for this latitude
and are therefore correct. Call and get an Ayer s
Almanac, and when got keep it.

WIHE I3II m&.
BECAUH E for the cur** of Incipient Consumption,
Weak Lungs, Weak Stomachs, General Debility,
I and for purifying and enriching the Blood, they are
! absolutely unsurpassed by any other remedy. To he
assured of his, it is only necessary to make the trial.
The Wine itself is of a very superior quality—near
ly double the usual strength of other wines - warming
and invigorating the whole system, from the h< ad to
the feet. As these Bitters are tonic and alterative in
their character, so they strengthen and invigorate the
whole system, and give a
Fine Tone and Healthy Action.
* to all its parts, by equalizing the circulation, removing
obstructions, and i roducing a general warniih.
They are also excelPiit for diseases and weakness
peculiar to Females, where atonic is required to
strengthen and Brace the System.
No lady who is subject to lassitude or faintness
should be without them. and they are revivifying in
their action.
Th se Bitters will not only cure but prevent dis
ease, and in this respect are doubly valuable to the
person, sick or well, who may use them.
For proof of the truth of this, s<'e full particulars
and reference to persons cured on the circ ilar inside

WHY?
Because they strengthen the lungs, quiet and sooth
the nerves, promote digestion, strengthen and brace
the whole system. Aside from theit medical virtues,
they are unsurpassed as a delightful beverage, produ
cing aii the exhilerating effects of Brandy or Wine,
without their injurious results. To that unfortunate
class ot individuals addicted to the use of Strong
Drink, these Bitters will prove invaluable, as they
prevent the sudden reaction which invariably follow's
a “spree” and, acting as an alterative, remove from
the system the poison which is imbibed by all who
indulge in the use of the adulterated Liquors to be
found in most of the bar looms of this country. Ine
briates w'tio wish to reform, and yet require a stimu
lent, by substituting these Bitters for the mixed wines
and liquors ot the drinking saloons, can in a short
time restrain entirely from the use of stimulants.
iU7"Try one bot'le and the bitters will tell their own
story.
