(.'LOSING THE HOOKS.
Our necessities allow us no discretion. Mo
must collect, or at any ra e, reduce our claims
to notes. We shall immediately prepare our ac
counts for collection, and wo beg our friends to pay
or if that be impossible, to give their notes. A large
amount is duo us in the city and country; hut
we cannot pay current expenses, unless those
who owe us pay a reasonable proport ion of their
indebtedness and enable us to close our books
by liquidating the remainder.
If our friends will consider what this ‘pressure’
costs us, they will not complain that we seek, at
least to close our books. We must do so ! Let
all therefore meet us with what they can spare,
and their written aeknowledgmant for the bal
ance. Every debtor to the Times office will he
called on as promptly as possible.

CHRISTY'S MINSTRELS.
Our readers will perceive from our advertising
columns that this celebrated troupo of negro de
lineators will give two performances in this city
at Temperance Hall, begining Monday night.—
Our citizens have been so long looking upon the
serious aspect of affairs, that a good laugh would
boos groat service to them. Such they can enjoy
at Temperance Hall on Monday and Tuesday
nights of next week. George Cristy, the leader
of the troupe, has no superior in his line of bust
ness. He is an excellent vocalist, a good instru
mental performer, and his Ethiopian melodies
are universally known and appreciated. Tho
rest of the troupe aro, doubtless, admirably able
to Bust tin him. To show tho opinion of the
Southern press we clip the following from th
Charleston Courior:
Gkorqr JJCumsTv’s Troupe—Theatre—-Se
cession Hall was we.l filled with an apprecia
tive audience on Monday evening, to greet the 1
first appearance of Ueogre Christy’s troupe.—
George Christy is so well known to all South
ern gentlemen who have visited New York,
that no deserip ion or specifications aro required.
This entertainment was a gratifying success,
and was enjoyed throughout with unceasing zest.
In many respects this troup is above comparison,
and in all the essentials of a sable opera it is com
plete and thoroughly organized. In the manage
ment, also, strict attention is paid to variety and
promptness so that tho hearer is kept in a con
stant state of excitement and enjoyment. Noth
ing is over done in time, and no dull intervals
aro allowed against time. Whatever is on tho
hills will bo found on tho boards, and if any dis
crepancy occurs more will be found in the perfor
mance than in tho promise.
Having surrendered all claim to Secession Hall
in favor of the Convention, the George Christy
troupo will appear this evening, and until further
notice, in tho Theatre, which has been secured
for that purpose. This will allow many choice
pieces, dependent on scenic resources and efforts,
which could not he commanded in tho Hall.
If there is ever a time to laugh it will be found
and enjoyed by those who visit tho Theatre this
evening.
CHURCH NOTICE.
We aro requested to give notice that there
will he divine service this morning at St. Paul
Methodist Church, commencing at 11 o’clock.—
Also on Sabbath rnoniug at, the same hour, and
7 o’clock in tho evening.

CHOLERA,
® Perry Davis—Sir:—Tlio bene

word of praise for it. Experience

Chills, Weariness, Common Colds, Hoarseness
Cholera, Cholera Morbus, Diarrhoea, Dysentery
Toothache, <fee there is nothing betteVthan
Pain Killer. I have this hour recovered from a
severe attack of Sick Headache, by using two
spoonfuls taken at thirty minutes interval, in a
wine glassful of hot water. I ara confident that
through tho blessing of God, it saved mo from
the cholera during the summer of 1543. Trav-!
cling amid heat, dust, toil, chango of diet and
constant exposure to an infected atmosphere,my
system was constantly predisposed to dysentery
attacks, accompanied with pain, for which the
Pain Killer was a sovereign remedy—one tea
spoonful curing the worst case in an hour, or at
the most, half a day! I have heard of many ca

ARE AGENTS for Mapes’ Notrogenized
Superphosphate of Mine!!!
Newhebhy, . C. Oct,. 1863.
Prof. J. J. Mapes, Dear Sir:—l bought twenty
bags of your Nitrogenized Superphosphate of Lime,
of your agents, Messrs. 11. & N. E. Solomon, Ham
burg, S. C., (who solicited a statement of its etfects)
and applied it to forty acres of my poorest cotton
land. This land is all on the public road where its
effects were seen. My neigh 1 ors, who are acquain
ted with the land, were astonished 'at ihe luxuriant
growth of the cotton where I used your Supherphos
phate. It produced better cotton and a larger amount
than on my good land; less work was needed in
making the cotton than on my other land. Not a
particle of rust was to be seen where I applied your
superphosphate, while the rust prevailed over every
other portion ot the coop.
Respectfully yours,
DAVID PAINE.
Note— Mr Paine’s good land compares fevorabiy
with the best cotton lands on the Saluda River. The
Saluda bottoms are proverbial a for producing large
quantities of cotton,
For Codon, Tobacco, Wheat, Corn, &c.—Com
posed of Dried Blood, Bones, Sulphuric Acid,
Peruvian Guano, and Sulphate of Ammonia.
Large Silver Medal awarded 1859, by the
Ameriean Institute of New York. Patented
1859. Perfect uniformity of quality! Testi
mony of hundreds who have used it for years.—
Does not exhaust the land like Guano but per
manently improves it! 100 pounds of Nitrogen
ized Superphosphate of Lime will equal in effect
and lasting power 185 pounds Peruvian Guano.
Produces heavier*bolls 'of Cotton, and greater
weight of wheat and other grain per bushel, than
Peruvian Guano. Prevents Rust.
Fort Valley, Ga., Dec. 20, 1800.
PROF. MAPES—Dear Sir: 1 purchased from
your agents at this place, Messrs. W. G. Anderson
& Go., about four tons of your Nitrogenized Super
phosphate ot Lime, and have used it this year upon
Cotton; applying it upon GO acres of laud, or about
120 pounds to the acre. The result was most satis
factery, considering the extreme dry season we had
to encounter. The 60 acres yielded me 28 bales ot
cotton weighing on an average 520 lbs. per bale. The
land I applied vour manure upon was old worn out
land, which would, without the application ot the
Phosphate, not have made more thnn 15 bales of cot
ton. 1 have this year used both Peruvian »and Amer
ican Guano, and do not hesitate to give your Phos
phate the prefer ce; indeed I shall use it exclusive
ly another year, and have given your ngsnts an order
for 25 tons to be applied to my next year’s crop, and
from my experience would recommend 160 lbs to the
acre on cotton. 1 would state further that during tlie
dry weather we had in June and July, that the cot*
Hpn where 1 used your Phosphate, looked more luxu
riant, and did not stiver as much from rust, land held
its bolls .better than any cotton manured with other
manures. > Very Respectfully, *
HUGH ALLEN.

Great Seduction in Prices of

FAMILY SEWING MACHINES,
* *
I am authorized to sell these Machines at a re
duction on former prices of from 10 to 15
per cent.; according to style of pattern.
All Machines warranted.
The Grover & Baker Company is one of the oldest
an 1 most successful of the originators arid directors
of the business. It entered the field at an early day,
when Sewing Machines were almost in their firststa
ges—when their manufacture was more of an experi
ment than anything else. Step by step it lias progres
sed in the development of the trade and the perfect
ing of its Machines; taking advantage of all posi
hie improvements in the make, adaptation and modi
fication of the machinery, it has enjoyed the exclu
sive benefits of the inventive genius of one person of
the firm (Mr. William O. Grover) by which it has been
placed in possession of privileges and patents that
have given its Machines peculiar and exclusive excel
lencies.
The mechanism of the GroverJj- Biker Machine is
exceedingly simple, durable and easily understood by
any person old or young; there is nothing in its man
agement that the simplest mind may not grasp, and
it is merely a question ol time and memory with some
—thost ladies will learn at once showing, while oth
ers will require two or three lessens; frequently we
see little Misses, only ten years of age, operating the r
Machine on straight seams without assistance.
Families who are about to purchase, are repectful
ly invited to call and examine for themselves, we
take the liberty ofsaying, it is better for y<>u tonur
chase of a local responsible Agent, than from Ped
dlers wlio are traveling (through the country with
cheap Sewing Machines.

Headache is the favorite signby whieh natsue
makes known any deviation whatever from the
natural state of the brain, and viewed hi this
light it may be looked on as a safeguard htttend
ded to give notice of disease whieh might other
wise escape attention, till too late to bo remedied,
and its indications should never be neglected.—
Headache may be classified under two names,vk:
Symptomatic and Idopathic. Symptomatic head
ache is exceedingly common and U the precursor
of a great variety of disease, among which are
Apoplexy, Rheumatism, QouLand all febrile dis
eases. In its nervous form it is sympathethie
of disease of the stomach constituting sick head
ache, of hepatic disease constituting bilioushead
ache, of worms, constipation and other disorders
of the bowels, as well as renal and uterine affec
tions. Diseases of the heart are very frequently
attended with headaches, Anaemia and plethora
are also affections which frc<fuently oecasio*
headache. Idiopathic Headache is also very com
mon, being usually distinguished by the name ei
nervous headache, sometimes coming on sudden
ly in a state of apparently sound health and
prostrating at once the mental and physical en
ergies, and in other instances it comes on slowly,
heralded by depression of spirits or acerbity of
temper. In most instances the pßin is in front
of the bead, over one or both eyes, and some
times provoking vomiting; under this class may
also be named Neuralgia.
For the treatment of either class of Ileadaeka,
the Cephalic Pills have been found a sure and cafV
remedy, relieving the most acute pains iu a few
minutes, and by its subtle pewer eradicating the
disease of which Headache is the unerring wide-*.
