Tv the Jloh. Mayor and Council
*J th» City of Cthnnkui:
CiioNfi.BMHX —In accordance with instructions
received I proceeded to examine by survey the old
Sewer, commencing, in Franklin street, between
the Muscogee Iron Works and Messrs. Barrin
ger & Morton’s establishment, and running thence
to the Chattahoochee river, and beg leave to re
port as follows:
There are two tanks built of brick on outer
edge of side walk (next to Iron Works,) the one
west it about 4 by 5 feet deep from surface of the
ground, it receive* all tho filth that comes from
back of Perry Heuse; likewise the draining
from tho west side of Wagon and Horse Lots
north of it; to the latter a small culvert passes
under the sido walk and if properly cleaned may
be made available for a distance of about 7 or 8
feet, (and avoid the necessity of rebuilding this
part;) the *mallness of tho sewer (coming in
here) from the Perry'llouso is much against its
effectiveness. Tho accumulation of tilth here
wa* *uch that on a frosty morning I had to retire
several time* before I could complete the necessary
levels; to report upon on account of the offensive
smell. West of the before mentioned tank is an
other 3 feet wide, 11 feet leng 4 feet deep with a
oak bottom, the accumulation of tilth here is as
bad as in tho former one. From this tank the
sewer turns west 102 feet to middle of Oglethorpe
street, tho fall of which is 1 foot 2% inches;from
this point continues in a # straight line, passing
under or near the trees on sidewalk on Franklin
between junction of Oglethorpe and Warren, .to
Broad street —distance 450 feet; the fall in thi3
distance is only two feet! From the last men
tioned place, a distance of 200 feet, this sewer
passes under the shade trees planted (or grow
ing) on edge of sidewalk, cr about S feet south
of brick wall enclosing Mr. Mott's ground—fall
is 8 feet J inches; the sewer at this point diverges
at an angle to the south across road; it then
makes another abrupt angle north te river, part
of whieh is open; at the last angle locks of lumber
almost entirely fill it up; tbc last distance is 250
feet and fall 4 feet 9 inches.
I consider this sower entirely too small and
the various grades and angles aro much against
its effectiveness.
I would respectfully recommend that this sew
er be entirely abandoned and a now one built,
commencing at the lowest part of Franklin at.,
between Iron Works and Messrs. Barringer Sc,
Mortons'* aud concentrating all the sowers at
this point, and from this point making one
straight line to river, distance 1197 feet, and thus
obtain a uniform grade—-fall of one foot in everv
100 feet.
The plans of sewer, arch culverts, drop mills,
Aa., I herewith submit lor your consideration.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
Your obedient servant,
WM. F. SKEIIEL,
Civil Engineer.

The Kosciusko Chronicle, of the Bth inst., says: j
From late personal observations in Oktibeha, '
in Choctaw, in Attala, and from the information
